tinyurl.com/mdwx6y6 Preparedmind101 has long been known for not being the biggest axe advocate, however...I am open to having my mind changed. The Fiskars X15 is the first full sized axe I have purchased, and the first of several other axes, hatchets, and hawks (coming soon). In this video I give my take on the feel on it and how I would want to use this, as well as my first chop test and impressions.

It's not that Fiskars doesn't break, but if you can break it, send Fiskas a picture and they will replace it FOR LIFE. Never a need to replace a handle. And if that's too big to carry, try the X7 shorter axe.

You speak balance but the truth is that when actual point of balance is as close of the blade as possible it chops the best possible way the as little amount of force as possible. That´s why Fiskars is "heavy" at the top. They´re made to chop wood, not ninja games. And what comes to that destruction test, they beat the handle sideways into a rock. So it wasn´t about actual durability. They just wanted to see how long does it take to brake it. It´s like driving a car into to telephone pole as long as it moves. Nothing to do with how that car is made or is it good or bad. That particular axe is not meant for backpacking or close up work. There is a model for that purpose too. Close up work is done with a knife or similar to that. I always find it incredibly weird that one tool should always manage to do every task that you can think of even when they´re clearly not design that kind of work.

While I can agree with wanting something that will last a lifetime with normal use, axes seem to be kind of an exception as the head is the important part, the handle will eventually fail no matter who makes it or the material. As long as the head is of good quality the handle can be replaced in the case of most wood handled axes. The problem with these axes and their polymer or fiberglass handles is that they are made to be cheap and disposable. If the handle breaks, buy another one. So in that light it seem kind of pointless to do a test like that with this type of tool. Unless you plan to die young, count on an axe handle to eventually fail, either due to age, wear, or user error. Please note I am not saying a tool can't last a lifetime (or three lol), just that it seems unrealistic to think that the particular tool you buy will based on a destruction test of a different tool. Each tool will have its own specific breaking point even in perfect conditions. Add in all the variables and then you start to understand why pretty much every company has a warranty and service department. That being said, I also like destruction tests that show the limits of a tool but I don't count on them showing me what will last a lifetime. They only show that when used what they should be used for and not abused, the tool should be able to handle it.

So it's a bad axe, even though it chops wood great? For under $40 bux? Under 3.4 lbs. A Granfors Bruks Small Forest is about the same size, weights about 2 lbs and costs $120. You might want to check out the Gerber Camp Axe II (same as Fiskars X10). It has the same head, about 2.4 lbs and is more packable. Or even the X7 hatchet, which weighs 1 lb. You'd be shocked what the little X7 can do. I'd argue that if you manage to break one of those Fiskars handles, you'd better have a half dozen wooden spares ready to go if you use a traditional axe.

First off ANY full size axe is going to be heavy. And I wouldn't carry one when backpacking. Secondly what the full size Fiskars offers is an axe that chops and chops well. As far as I am concerned what more do you want? I know there are better axes out there, but not too many in the same price range.

Thanks for posting the video This particular Fiskars axe is not meant to be carried around in a backpack. There are many versions, dedicated to different objectives. The X15 is a serious wood shed, or dedicated wood chopping tool like you mentioned. The reason Fiskars abandoned the replaceable handle, they could make this handle with additional benefits, at a throw it away and buy a new one cost level. One thing you may not know about the handle. it's designed to work down to -30C without becoming brittle and thus breaking! You can take it inside or leave it outside in the cold without the swelling/sweating associated with wooden handles. Finally that fiber handle doesn't store cold like metal, meaning your hands stay warmer during cold weather use, which is a survival benefit!

Those "axe guys" on KZfaq who don't like the Fiskars axe are snobs with limited to moderate experience. I won't name one rich guy with moderate experience who is known for his axe "expertise" & plays at homesteading & his many toys & calls the Fiskars "The Hateful Axe". It would appear that he is a bit of a luddite when it comes to this axe & technology. I'm an old man with decades of experience. Fiskars is a good functional design & works well with little to no maintenance. It is an affordable everyman's axe. No. it is not my choice for bushcrafting but for every day wood processing it is hard to beat. I own many classic wooden handled axes & hatchets of all designs, heritage & country of manufacture influence. Of course I like my beautiful classic axes but you are correct sir; that axe chops well. as for the hockey tape, good idea for the width of one hand at the end of the handle. It provides needed grip for your main gripping hand. You want the rest of the handle smooth so your guiding hand can slide down the handle while you swing. Cheers.

I agree with you about KZfaq snobs. First time I saw a video from the same guy you’re referring to, I had a feeling that he is biased for some reason. Time passes and he uploads some videos about Fiskars. And I don’t understand why he hates those axes so much? Hate might be a too strong word, but nevertheless he puts Fiskars at the bottom of axes. But then I realised. Even though he has a video of Fiskars chopping axe vs. his favourite axe in which he admits that Fiskars performed better, he still favours the old one. And the reason is because it’s better looking, or more traditional etc. Which is fine, I get it, beautiful objects are beautiful. But that also made him look like a snob, after all who cares about the look, when function matters, as is in tools? Also, many people don’t seem to know, that Fiskars is the oldest company still manufacturing axes in the world. They have probably more knowledge about axe making process with subtle nuances than anyone else, because they’ve done and refined these tools for hundreds of years. Way longer than any American company at least, since USA didn’t exist when Fiskars was already making good axes.

Comming from a forestry back ground, in that echelon fiskars is actually pretty well respected on average, but there's also alot of purists that just need an original axe, steel and wood, not only because it's traditional but also more practical because you can replace the handle and repair it more. However, from a business perspective they often liked fiskars alot. Soft steel that's hard enough but very very easy to sharpen And the handles are definitly more durable than wood, but still if it breaks it's useless. (But generally fiskars has a good return) They're workhorses, that's what I love about em. But doesn't have the soul of a traditional axe. Edit: and great ergonomics.

I have a question: how do think that fiskers would do with dead dried wood? I live in the city so all the wood that I'm tipicly grt is very random. Like from the side of the road or off of Craigslist or something. So its its not that fresh wood.

Chris, your first impressions of the X15 pretty much mirror my experience with it. It is a chopping beast but I have no desire to pack it either. I recently got a Wetterlings Fine Forest Axe and can honestly say I will have no problem packing that one with me. It is beautifully crafted, well balanced and just feels more versatile. The X7 is a different animal. That is very packable. It is a long time favorite.

I own a Fiskars X7, X15, X17, a Wetherlings, 2# Hudson Bay Premium Velvicut® axe, and the newest Fiskars black in color non-X line: the Hatchet & 28" Axe. Plus I live in Alaska so I will say his or her axe choice depends on the persons needs, wants, tastes, and ego. I said "her" on purpose because women are better "Axemen" than men. Why do women chop wood better than men? 1. They take their time and let the axe do the work. 2. On the whole they try to be accurate with their chops. Most men are in a hurry to chop trees down and use powerful inefficient swings (the ego part). Women are more accurate and although use more less powerful chops get the job done faster and with much let effort. This is why the lightweight Fiskars X-Line and newer non-X Line are pretty good axes for all types of outdoor folk. I personally like the easy to sharpen scandi edge of the Fiskars and not having to worry about the handle breaking or axe head loosening. Check out Noseman's video on his Fiskars X15 axe choice in the KZfaq video below: "My bushcraft kit PT 1 by Norseman"

It's as if you don't want to say you think a Fiskar/Gerber product is good. Your wielding a large, wood processing axe, that is very affordable and good at what it's designed to do. Just because something isn't great for a B.O.B. or hiking/backpacking doesn't mean it's not a good tool. That be like saying a craftsman or snap-on tool set isn't great because they can't be easily transported.

It's interesting that you tape the handle which prevents you from sliding you hand along when lifting and raising it. Sorta adding something that makes you work harder and prevents correct usage. I haven't found a fiskars product that didn't punch above its weight. Great products, provided you can think outside the square.

I broke the original handle on mine..I ended up making a new handle by slotting a hickory handle and lashing it with paracord. I boiled water and poured it over the paracord, causing it to shrink and tighten the wraps and knots. Works good so far. For more permanent solution, I'd probably use a bit of high strength epoxy and wrap but it was a quick fix and so far so good. Not a bad camp axe in my opinion.

You want a heavy ax, get an American Felling ax. 3 lbs is light comparatively speaking. It's not a hatchet with a 1 lb head. If you want portable do an X7. I love a wood handle in comparison and I love my Gransfors Bruks and a Council Velvicut Hudson Bay ax that I have but I will say the Fiskars X series will out cut them weight for weight. They won't hold an edge quite as well but they sharpen up easily.

I bought a Fiskars X7 hatchette... lighter and still tough... but the plastic carry sheath sucks. It needs a belt carry which you will have to make, or figure out how to attach it to a back pack. Or throw it in your pack I guess. Still the pastic sheath adds weight. It reallt needs a leather or kydex or even a nylon sheath. A bslt carry loop on an X7 would be a plus. I keep trying to think of a way to modify the plastic sheath or make one for belt carry... either looped belt or a duty belt which is wider.

It's a good thing for an axe to be top heavy. Knives are for carving, slicing and general cutting, axes are for chopping and splitting. Although it's cool if an axe can slice, it's not natural. Vice versa with knives.

The x15 is 23inches long. For camping and bushcraft the x7 is 14 inches or the x10 is 17 inches long. Which would be better ihave made feather sticks with both easily chopped and splitt wood with either. The x7 is more for my sons the x10 tho I have split wood up to 10 inch diameter logs with ease. These r what fiskars calls chopping axes aka felling axes. the x11 x17 x25 and x27 are splitting axes the wedge on those r more extreme but work great for splitting. It depends on climate legth of stay and what size trees youd be getting as to what ur axe size ud need whether the weight of bigger or smaller axes has merit

I have a few fiskars (not this one), I have the big splitting maul, the smallest hatchet they make and a slightly larger hatchet. I also have a wetterlings, several estwings, and various other axes and hatchets. I have never had a splitting maul split better or outlast the fiskars, whether wood handled, plastic handled, fibre glass handled... They all break. I live in northern alberta canada and have only wood heat. I used to go through at least one broken axe per year splitting fire wood, my fiskars splitter has lasted 3 years so far. The little hatchet is my fave. They may not be indestructible, like you said everything can break, they may not be nearly as sexy as my wetterlings, but I think they are the best bang for the buck, by far.

Something I have not seen posted on. Finland uses axes differently than most other countries. Watch some videos of people from Finland using traditional Finnish axes to chop wood AND build log cabins. They pry laterally with their axes to a degree than would break the handle out of a gransfors or American axe. The old Bilnas axe which was the traditional axe, has a much larger eye and a collar, It was made for the twisting and prying. The Fiskars is also. Take your Gransfors or Council Tool axe and use then side by side with a Bilnas or Fiskars and use like an axe is used in Finland and the Gransfors or Council would probably not survive long.

No doubt this axe is probably the best chopping axe for its size. I can split logs when they are lying down with mine. I paid 25 bucks for mine so for 25 bucks you can destroy logs nicely. Find the Husqvarna small forest axe for around 60 bucks. by far to me the best carry axe for the money.

Silky Big Boy Saw. Slim and light, under 1 lb., 16 inches long folded, fits in my lumbar waist pack. Mine is the Extra Large Teeth, ( 4 tooth sizes, each with different colored handles). Faster, lighter, packable, cuts over head, safer, and quieter than axes. Silky Katanaboy, next step up, is expensive and 21 inches long, but it has been known to beat chainsaws (4 inch log in 6 strokes).

Chris, I think most axemen are nostalgic for axes with wooded handles. Axes from 40 bucks to 400 bucks have wooded handles and polamer is just not good. Well the facts are that polamer handles are great! they are strong, light and overall tough as nails. I have the X11 with the 17 inch handle and yes grip tape would be an advantage. An axe is not a carving too it chops and splits. Your knife carves and feathers. Your right everything breaks if misused and abused. If you have respect for your tool it will take care of you. Great vid.

Alot of great recommendations here for bushcrafting type axes. however, if going tactical, Check out Hardcore Hardware Axes. Pricey but built like a tank and great for carry on a chest rig or pack.

Exactly! Anything can break cause as far as i know There is no adamantium stuff around Yet for the price they work well By the time the axe break you could have save enough money to buy something else

X-15 $40 4.35 lbs Grans scandi forest axe $130. 2.5 lbs Grans American felling axe $190. 4.75 lbs unless you want to go into logging its a pretty easy comparison.

I love my Fiskars Axe, but he has a point, carrying it is annoying with the balance of it. Something heavier but more balanced would be easier. Great to swing though.

my first impression:) pls when you lift the axe when your gonna strike place your right hand closer to the head, its lighter en better for your body. then place your hand back to your other on the end and make your strike :) have an good day

It's a splitting axe...for splitting firewood....not chopping down trees. It's design to split with it's V shaped head and weight. With the coating on the axe head it will prevent it from getting stuck in the wood when splitting the wood....

You spent quite a while complaining about the weight but never told us how much it weighed. You are completely right though, at over 3 pounds there is no way I would strap that to my pack. The x11 might be a better option for hiking.

I've had this axe for 15 years, and while its chopped a lot of wood and lived to tell the tale, I honestly cant figure out why they put a head this heavy on a handle this short. The reasons for a short handled axe is so that the axe can be used one handed, is better for delicate work, and to make the axe more portable... this axe rather sucks on all counts. It does make more sense than the x10 though, which is a 2 1/4lb head on a hatchet handle!

I totally agree Chris, in Germany many people working in the woods or the garden, use Fiskars axes. And yes, they are great choppers, no doubt about it! But, and this is why I like your impressions, Fiskars axes are not designed to be bushcraft axes with different tasks. They simply are choppers. And it's true they are "head heavy", if the handle brakes "your not gonna Mc Guyver" another one, etc. Therefore it's a matter of use. If you're out in the woods or garden, doing simple woodwork, Fiskars are really doing the job for the price. But like I said, they are not supposed to be designed as bushacraft axes imho. Thanks for showing this. Atb Marc
