Just a little story from me, I was hammering on my X27 with a sledge, using it for a wedge, I miss hit the head and broke the handle, 10000% my fault, I shot Fiskars an email, let them know exactly how I broke the axe and how much I loved splitting with it, they sent me a brand new one! Kick ass company, I own 4 Fiskars axes now lol

I’ve been splitting firewood for personal use for 45 years, of that 45 years, 40 of it was by hand with wedges, or every kind of splitting maul you could imagine. After watching your video I ordered a Fiskars X 27 off Amazon. I opened up the box and my first thought was, it was odd weighted as the handles was very light compared to the head. I took a piece of wood 10 inches across with a crotch and after three swings, I had four pieces of wood, easy Peezy. Best splitting mall I’ve ever used. Thank you for the video.

Bought the X27 for my first bash at splitting wood. It's very forgiving for a learner like me and I got through a lot of tough rounds (30+ inch knotty jobbies!) It's also made me completely fall in love with splitting wood. The noise, the exercise, the satisfaction. It's like soul food for me. I adore that axe!

Bought my x 27 back in January never looking back. There have only been a handful that were too knotty to split, so out comes the saw. Great axe. I bought mine after seeing your video with Tony about the fiskar tools.

Have both x25 hangs out next to wood pile all winter and with splitter rest of the year. And My x27 follows my chainsaws around great for splitting large rounds for transport. They both work awesome.

I'm 5'8" and the X25 is absolutely perfect. I have a hydraulic for my larger loads, but the 25 is the bomb with a small load, and I truly enjoy using it. I don't sell. I go through about 2 full cords every season, and try to stay about 2 years ahead with mostly red oak and ash. I hate to burn cherry or hard maple, because I feel that those two belong on fine furniture. Love your shows as both educational and entertaining. Thanks for all the great tips, and keep on choppin'.

Love your channel. I have every size of axes and mauls that Fiskars makes. In my opinion the X27 is for taller people; 6’ or taller. I am 5’8” on a good day. My go to is the X25. If I do need some extra power, I will use the X27. Like you said they are all good. Keep up the great videos and thank you.

Ive used a fiskars hammer for about a year now. The pommel swell with that orange grip is what does it for me. Saves the day when that fatigue kicks in.

I have 3 Fiskars products 2 axes and 1 maul. The x25 was the 1st o e I got used and just like others is too short for me. So I used it as a wedge with a handle.. All 3 live in the truck and are with me on job site.. nice review Chris 😁👍

I absolutely love my X27. Ive got a Couple mauls, that I dont use anymore. I do have a Gransfors Bruks maul that I do like and use, but the axe that's on the wheeler day in and day out, is the X27, and my Plumb boys axe.

I bought fiskars x25 last year and now i surprised myself x17. I wanted to an axe what i could use two or one hand. work with fiskars axes a pleasure. great video! Have a good work!

I love my X27, I think the with the longer handle it is less likely than the x25 to hit your leg on a missed strike and hit the ground. I also have the Fiskars pickaroon which is awesome for picking up pieces from the ground or dragging them from the back of my pickup. I use an Estwing axe to help load rounds onto my splitter with out bending over, it holds the pieces with more control than the pickeroon,

They are both GREAT splitting axes! Have both and like both. Started with the x27 and agree you can get more speed with it. I use the x25 because I'm 5'- 9" tall and they say the x27 is better for people 6' and taller. My kids use the x27 because they're 6' tall. I've been splitting for 45 years and had every kind of maul; Fiskars is the best!!

I have the x27. I got it at Walmart probably 4-5 years ago they were on clearance in Sept which was kinda odd and it was $25. They had the mauls and other lengths too. Really like it. If they made one with a higher quality steel I would def buy another. I use mine a bit when splitting cherry especially stuff no bigger then say 14 inches. Can split it faster that way then my splitters. Cherry splits so nice. I split some of the smaller ash too with it but forget about the bigger pieces those go right on the splitter lol

Thank you! Great demonstration! I am a relative new comer. I bought both. Before watching your demonstration and review I was going to return the maul but after watching your video I have decided to keep it. My issue with it was the bounce back....but it depends how you wield it. Again... thanks!😅

One thing I did notice, he had a lot less control after the split with the x25. Especially at 16:43. It seemed to come back toward his legs a lot in his demos especially that second chop. When he was splitting with the 27 the splitting axe went straight down into the wood, and he didn't have to control on the after swing to avoid hitting himself in the legs.

I like Fiskars (and Husqvarna chainsaws !) too. I own the X25 for woodsplitting and the X7 for backpacking (I also take with me the little Fiskars saw SW73). Cherry on the cake, Fiskars axes have here in France a 25 year warranty. By the way, Fiskars axes are named after their weight in hundreds of grams (X7 for 0.7 kg, X11 for 1.1 kg, X27 for 2.7 kg...)

I have Gransfors, Hults, Stanley, Craftsman, Wedges slegdes and mauls that have been in my family for several generations.. about a dozen years ago I purchased a Fiskars Super Splitter... a few years ago, the X27.. those two are the only two I swing anymore, 100% wood heat in our house. When I first got the Fiskars, I told my wood heat friends it changed splitting from a strength workout to an aerobic workout. About 99% of our wood is hardwoods, splitting hickory right now, two big walnut blowdowns in the woods are on deck..

I also have them both and even have the short 13-14 inch one. I mainly use them on the big logs I can't lift (I'm 6'2'' and 250lbs). I remove small bits just like you did until I can lift them to then go on the wood splitter.

Have the 8 lb maul and the X27, I've spoiled myself. Love these tools

I love my X21! Thinking about buying a larger Fiskars because (for unknown reasons) our firewood supplier seems to be providing much larger rounds this year. Maybe this might be helpful for someone reading - For larger rounds, I go around the edge taking off pieces. I feel that is a lot easier than taking a large round down the middle.

Had my X27 for has to be 7+ years I think. I love the way the hollow handle puts all the weight in the head. I use it every year through winter splitting our wood down smaller for the fire. So that is like 12m3 a year with it and still going strong.

Hey Chris, I also have the X27 and I love it. I do all my splitting by hand, and I haven't had a better splitting axe before.

I prefer the 25 but same reason, when fiskars came out w splitting axes I could only find that size and consequently I got used to it. A rubber bungee cord can save you a ton of time on the straight grained oak, ash and probably a few other species.

i must agree , Think cutting and splitting firewood is great exercise and enjoyable. I always feel better after making fire wood and am gonna buy a Friskars soon after seeing it in action

I got the x27 at your recommendation and haven’t looked back at the 6lbs maul since. I do choke up on it at times for smaller easier splitting logs so I don’t just blow through the wood into the dirt so I can see the utility in the x25.

Excellent test! I have an older version of that X25. As you mention, one great feature in Fiskars is that it is almost impossible to brake the handle. This enables also to twist the half split log open (carefully). You can't do that with an ax with a wooden handle. It will brake. Have you tried splitting of logs inside a car tire? Don't need to pick logs around. Much much more productive. It is also safer for your legs. Tire stops ax's movement.

Got a sharp little cheapass hatchet that I keep next to me while splitting with the Countyline 40 ton, for those little "hangers on". Nice presentation. They have those "Fiskers" at Tractor Supply and I have been thinking about getting one. If I were a game player I would guess (2). I bought the X27 about a year ago. Fantastic axe, no regrets. But when I was trying to decide between the X27 and the X25, I was wishing there was a 32" version of it. A 32" would have been my first choice, because that's what my 8lb maul is, and I'm used to that length. If they ever make a 32", (X26?), I'll be getting that.

Good review I like all of Fiskars products hammers to axes made in Finland quality products. I was a bit hesitant at first but after trying their axes and hammers I was impressed at the end of the day it’s a tool that does the job.

Chris, I watch video you produce. In fact, my 8 year old grandson watches with me and recognizes you by name. I have cut and split firewood for over 40 years since I don't own a mechanical splitter. I bought the X27 based on your video done with Tony. I works so much better than a traditional "Go Devil" (which is what we call a maul down here in the South). I am perplexed that you have not oner mentioned Tony in this video and since you guys seem to have shared a lot, I am hoping that you are still friends.

Been using the X27 since fall 2018, and it has been the best splitting axe I've used. Also have the Fiskar's 8 lb Maul 10lb Sledge and 4lb Hammer with wedges. The shorter X25 I found too dangerous as the target pieces strike surface needed to be a bit higher and the full swing follow through was risky! The X27's follow through is lower and of lesser risk. All are a great workout! Keep up the great vids!!

After this video, I need to add Fiskars X27 to my firewood tool set. I got the Fiskars Hookaroon 28” a few years back and have never looked back. I use my tools and the hookaroon has stood up and laughed at me, as if saying is that all you got? For reference I have moved 24” across bucked pieces of live standing red oak up to waist height with that hookaroon and never lost a round, I do not do that all the time, it was a test to see how it would hold onto the round, it passed with flying colors. That had me hooked on Fiskars. Great well built tools that work and hold up. Great video Chris

Fiskars Fan myself, for a long time. I stuffed a 1 foot chunk of bicycle inner tube into the hollow handle using a skinny stick. I think it's about 6 inches in from the open end. Try it, it can be removed. I like the feel in the hands....

the 36 inch handle on the X27 is a little much if you are short, BUT if you can get used to it, the increase in speed is worth it as it means you can split much bigger before being forced to get a maul out.

I think from the looks of it the X25 would be better for splitting wood when it's elevated or for shorter people. I'm tall like you and seen a video from Fiskars about picking the correct axe for you. It said that your arm length and your arm strength would determine the size and weight of your axe. So you're right about it being safer to have a longer axe for a taller man. I hauled concrete for years the guys would mark their tools so nobody ran off with them, so I'm used to seeing tape, paint or a name scratched into tools, it would help to find them as well.

I love my x27. I just got the fiskars 8lbs maul. You have to try one. They definitely figured out the geometry. Minimal effort on huge rounds. Swings as good as the x27.

Iv bn using the x25 for 10 years now it'll split whatever you want old oak, beach Ash knotted pine, it's a great tool and I am 5ft11, and preferred it to the longer axe!

I was trying to decide if I was going to buy a fiskars splitting ask or invest in something more expensive like a German axe buy after watching your videos tonight I’m going to grab a X27 because I leave my axe outside and the longer handle is safer & harder swing. I bought my first X27 9 years ago. It's the best splitting axe I've used, you just need to keep them sharp for them to work best. I bought another X27 3 years ago and leave it on my splitter for small branches and some hand splitting. I also have a Fiskars 7853 splitting axe that is 23.5 inches long. I use that one on canoe camping trips, but it's short for normal splitting. I'm going to buy another X27 so I can leave it by my outdoor wood burner. I agree that you don't need to baby these splitting axes and they work great.

recently bought an X27, used a 16 lb monster maul for years, getting too old for it. Something to be said for speed and a long handle. I prefer to split the heavy rounds in order to lift them into my truck. I will noodle them if they are too nasty to split. Love the channel. Keep on splitting.

I got the X27LL. I am a small guy, broke my back 28 years ago due excavator bucking hitting me so it's makes this a hard job. I find the larger swing circle helps.

I’ve owned an X27 for years. It has a long reach (I’m 6’2”) and it hits with authority. Tremendous splitter. As you say, it is the only maul I use anymore.

AND ! 90% fewer shreds and shards than the giant processor. So fewer trips to mount Shardmore with the tractor bucket. Nice job on today's installment .

I like Fiskars brand scissors, they also have a lifetime guarantee. I used to make rubber stamps and I used Fiskars spring load scissors to cut both rubber and polymer stamps from sheets of the rubber and polymer. I wore out several and lost the springs etc. I sent photos and made phone calls to the company, no problem, they sent replacement scissors at no cost to me. Fiskars are a great company and very easy to deal with when necessary..

Fiskars 8 lb Mual out performs any Mual we've ever used and the Iso Core handle is great!

Amen, also own a x27 and love it, I have a splitting axe from Lowes / Homedepot that has flares on the side that also works very well, but the fiskers by far is the best bang for $$$ in quality and will outlast the handler

Ive used the 27 for 5 years and honestly, if you get a really nasty piece of wood full of burls that wont split, it happens, I use my saw cut the piece in half with the grain part way and use the fiskars to finish it. I cut 15 pulp wood cords or 45 face cords annually, we heat strictly with wood in Michigans UP. No kidding its a really good tool and didnt break the bank. Ive been thinking about buying a fancy axe, but ive thought about it and whats the point? So it looks cool? The fiskars looks cool enough, my logger buddies know its a serious tool and a couple of them bought the 27 also after swinging mine. Great video fella!

Crazy timing, I just bought an x27 yesterday! Hopefully I picked the right one. The depot only had the x27.

I think they are alright. They work. I have a X17 for camping tasks. Bought it out of necessity and expected it to be trash. however it is pretty decent. Edge geometry, bit geometry, both solid. the handle has some wear but definitely not damaged which was my concern. I would have preferred a traditional style hatchet/axe. If the handle breaks most of the time you can replace it. I would be totally ok with being able to fix my tools. I service the rest of my tools anyway.

I bought an x15 several years ago for my skidder ax felling trees the handle is perfect length but too light to get down and dirty driving wedges. It was a fine ax till a dead forked ash decided to loose one side of its hinge and kick back the but landed mid handle and snapped it! I bought an x27 to replace it and have split 4 dump trailers of hardwood

Great review! I’ve been testing my father-in-laws X27, and it splits brilliantly, but for me it maybe feels a little long....? The swing feels a little unwieldy, and I find I’m really having to concentrate on the distance to the log. I’m mostly splitting logs up to nearly 2 ft in length for our wood burner, and it only struggled on elm (bloody awful stuff!) and really knotty ash and oak. Usually I’d use my 3.6kg/8lb maul to blast those though, with a 80cm/31.5” handle, but if I kept turning the log the X27 eventually got ‘em!! Only using a very small chopping block, about 8” high. It’s a shame that Fiskars don’t do an X26, with a handle somewhere in between the X25 and X27, with the same head for more options, but I reckon the X25 is probably a better length for me at 5’8”? Any thoughts? Fingers crossed my email guess is closest to the mark anyway so I can put the X25 through its paces 😂🤞🤙 Thanks for all the vids, really enjoy your enthusiasm for wood! 😁

I have both x27 and x25. I am 5-10 and about 185lbs. I will always go for the shorter x25. If something is hard to bust, or I am just starting a big round, I grab the big fiskars maul. The short handle just feels lightning fast and I have better control over it. I couldn't agree more, I really like fiskars axes and mauls. I have their little chopping axe, too.

I like an axe, myself. I have an 8# maul, and like you said- it wears you out quickly, swinging that thing. Especially with stubborn wood, where you have to pry it out every swing... Not a great profile, either- which doesn't help. Tends to leave a dent, but no cracks. Much prefer to use the axes: a 4# Vaughan that I got at a sidewalk sale for $30, with a brand new handle on it. and a 3.5# double bit- TSC's house brand. Both have 30+" handles. That double bit has a fiberglass/plastic handle that's proven nearly indestructable so far- and it's split a LOT of wood. The Vaughan's has gotten a little beat up, due to the stringy nature of the soft maple I split, my poor aim, and not being careful enough... As Buckin' says- reaching over will eventually bust up your handle. I keep mine in my shed, because I don't like leaving tools just laying around, because that's where most of my splitting is done, and so they don't grow legs and walk off, never to return. They're light, and easy to use. You can split a lot of wood, before it's time for a water break. With an axe, it's not about brute force- it's about reading the wood, and hitting the right place. And doing what you did with the bigger rounds- work the outsides. I love it when I split some dry Ash, and the pieces fly impressive distances, lol.

A tip for everyone to stop it getting stuck in the block, is to round off the top of the wedge on the face with a angle grinder.

Nice to have straight grained wood to split. I have a lot of elm and ash here. Think I will stay with the log splitter LOL Great video though and like the way they work.

I bought my x27 in 2010 for 39 bucks outta a catalogue , and I still use the same damn axe, it won’t break either if you miss either . Well worth it .

The 6 pound maul is my go to maul. I like to use a diamond wedge to get it to split. Once spit i can go to town spitting it with a maul or a double headed axe. The 10 lb. maul i used the less, Cause it will wear you out. The 6 and 4 pound mauls, is the ones i used the most. 4 lbs. for smaller stuff

Nice review, on shorter side here at 5 ft 9 and the x27 is the perfect size.

With all things it’s what we get accustomed to. I’ve used a Stihl 35” for years. I guess that’s what’s make the world go around.

To split woods i use old car tire, just put wood inside and chop it like you do, but woods don't fall on the ground so you don't need to pick it up, just grab it from tire, and what is very important - when you miss, or split wood to easy, it will stop the axe in safest way
