Toronto to Calgary in the Fisker Ocean One during the coldest winter period this year. Snowstorm and cold temps of -15F. (-26C) - this is a real test of winter EV performance.
The charging infrastructure varies widely from province to province in Canada and this trip passed through four of the least advanced provinces. So, this video is a bit of an explication of the charging development in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan. and Alberta.

I was impressed with how most of the chargers were cleared of snow. Would have been nice to see all the trip stats, costs and all, and also a better readout on the car's winter performance, but I understand that isn't your style (mine either, btw, but I do enjoy TeslaFi to keep track of all that for me) so I humbly accept and appreciate the video as you made it. Thanks for letting us tag along!

Yea eh. The software is being revised and the version on this trip was not the most recent. And, we did not really keep track - that particular journey in winter is more of a "whew, we made it" than a "keep close track of metrics."

Hi Bruce 👋🏾! I'm a FOO owner too. I'm an American living in Würzburg, Germany. We have cold temperatures here too and colder temperatures the further south you go ( equivalent to Canada 🇨🇦). Thank you for your video it really gave me more confidence to drive my fisker in the winter. I also must say, it seems that your FOO had no problems driving through the snow with All-season tires. @brucemacneil, My only complaint (I don't know about Canada) is how much the different charging companies charge to charge. Here in Germany, you have a choice of charging stations up to 300W could cost you .78 cents per kWh. Which could be pretty expensive. Of course, this is fast charging or hyper-fast charging.

Hey Bruce Great video - Thank you.... You can go ahead and say it...the Fisker is a nice vehicle but it isn't an Ioniq5!!! 😂😂😂 We just got home from a trip up to Georgian Bay area from Kingsville, Ontario. Love the cold weather performance of the Ioniq. It charged no problem, got decent range in -16C temps (about 330km) was warm and comfortable the whole way...just a great 1600km trip, got to tour around and see central Ontario. We're heading out for Southern Ohio in a week and then to Florida in early February. Our car never seems to shut off! 😂 We are looking forward to traveling East and seeing Quebec and seeing/using their charging infrastructure. We where disapointed in the charging infrastructure in British Columibia when we where there last November. It needs much improvement, it is just adequate but lacking in numbers available. There are a lot of EV's which was great to see but they have a way to go in charging! Have a great day! Mike 🇨🇦

Great video and it’s interesting to see the Fisker in action. When the charge port filling with snow, no back wiper and the entire back of the car filling with snow, you can obviously see that the vehicle wasn’t designed with Canadian winters in mind. Hopefully Fisker improves with future designs. Can you do a video on the software including what you like and dislike?

If you get a chance - my follow up video has more explanation on charging. Worth noting - the best way to tariff charging is "per minute." That aside - a discussion of Canada. - the oldest and most reliable charging network in North America is Circuit Electrique. That is the "home base" of FLo charging in Quebec. The reason for this is that energy and transport are provincial responsibility and domain. Premiers defend this aggressively. Quebec is really the gold standard. And, per minute is really the best way to tariff the charging. - Next would be Tesla. Tesla is the 2nd oldest charging network. THey are very very close in reliability to Circuit Electrique but are not nearly as widely available within Canada as Circuit Electrique is in Quebec. - Third (tied in my view) - is Flo outside of Quebec. Flo is almost coast to coast and work essentially 100% of the time. - Third - Couche Tarde (Circle K) - excellent and growing fast. - Third (tied again) - Chargepoint. Really awesome and well maintained. FYI - Chargepoint has locations as basically every IGA grocery store in Quebec. Remember again - energy and transport are provincial domain and the extent of charging infrastructure is closely correlated to the mindset of the provincial Premier. - Fourth - Electrify Canada - generally good and there are usually 4 chargers at each location. The stations are very reliable. - Fourth - tied - Farmers Coop in the Prairies. Fifth - Ivy - really disappointing and unreliable with a poor price policy. Sixth - Petro-Can. Great when they work. Also - the CBC Fifth Estate segment on EVs - wow - the reporter had never used an EV, borrowed a Leaf and a Tesla and tried to break them.

Awesome review- thanks for putting your neck on the line! How was the handling in the snow? I recently was caught in a 3 day ice storm in Portland Oregon and my FOO felt like a luge. Gonna have to rethink getting chains or straps for ice as it was a bit scary- even with low regen set instead of my usual Max setting, and i switched from Fun to Earth to cut back on instant throttle response to eliminate wheel spin. I have never experienced such bad iced roads in my life and i am regularly in Anchorage, Billings Montana and Bismarck ND! Probably want to keep your tire pressure down in the low /mid 40’s instead of 49 psi to maximize grip on the road. Also, i have had luck using Rain-X on the windows and camera lens’ to help keep slush/snow from accumulating too much. Even a good wax treatment to glass tends to keep windows much clearer.

Hi great video. I was actually wondering where to get some true winter feedback on the Ocean. As a Montrealer, a new brand/car that hasn't passed a single canadian winter yet would be a risk. So thanks for this. I'll share a couple of comments/observations for your consideration if you want to reply or film a part 2. It would seem the Ocean would benefit from mud guards to reduce the build up of snow in the back of the car. Also would have been good if you show us if all four door windows were getting well defogged and defrosted, and comment on the cabin ventilation and heating. If the windows open well or freeze up as well as the pop up door handles. Also curious about the software was it guiding you to any pre-drive warm-ups or battery conditioning periods. I mean especially after a overnight sleep and then to start up the next morning. Also was the navigation SW finding those charge stations or not, you seemed always surprised that they would charge the Ocean. So I get the impression you know where they are because you know the route from previous drives or was the car indicating these are candidate stops. I suppose no rear window wiper is a shocker but if the heating elements do well to melt the snow, then it is just a question of running it. But it would seem there is no heating element or you would have used it. I know on the Ocean purchase website there is a winter package option was curious if you had it on your model or not. Also wasn't clear if you add 4 season tires or winter tires. I assume the car comes with 4 season tires. winter tires in size 20 or 22 must be really expensive. I use 17s on my current gas car. Finally would be good for owners to know what SW version/update you are currently running on the car.
@brucemacneil
@brucemacneil 4 ай бұрын
Thanks - Window Snow - that accumulation took hours and hours of driving on very snow covered roads. We made zero effort to clear it. Around Quebec - most normal drives: MTL to Toronto or similar it would not be an issue. Charging - it is difficult to explain to a non-Quebec person how really fantastic is the charging in Quebec. It is similarly difficult for a Quebec person to understand how difficult charging is outside of Quebec. Software - the car did not have the very latest revision.

That was early in the journey. Not as cold and we were not making any effort at all to conserve. The claimed range of this model is on EV Database. That database says 380KM highway in "cold conditions. If I were planning a highway journey in -20C to -28C I would consider 380kms a reasonable planning autonomy. My estimate in that moment was based on observing how far we had come and what percentage we had used. At no point did we allow the battery to deplete to anywhere near a low enough level to cause concern. Our purpose was to get to my brother's residence in Calgary.

@@Trk09dr it is good to think of battery as a tank. The tank capacity for the Fisker is approximately 105KWh. A "level one" charger will deliver between 0.6 and 1.2Kw. So, at 1kw, it will take approximately 100 hours to fill the battery. But, really it is useful to consider your use case. How much driving you actually do. I drive lots, some of my relatives leave their car parked for weeks. That aside, it is almost always possible to install a level 2 charger that will deliver between 3 and 10Kilowatts. Thats good. I'm not sure if Fisker will make as they are not selling that many of cars. It looks good and nice large battery pack. All EV'S need the pulg and charge like Teslas have had since 2012. Maybe later this year or in 2025 when all vehicles switch to the NACS connector plug in charge will be adopted.

The version of the software that was present during the trip had a few shortcomings. Battery precondition was one. Since then, there is a few software revisions over the air though no precondition as yet. The situation was similar with my Ioniq 5. There was a later software update that made a 4X improvement in DC charging. That aside - the charging infrastructure varies across the provinces with North Ontario being among the very worst. All are improving.

Have you ever used the Tesla charging network? My experience in the USA is that it is much more reliable than all others. Seems like that Fisker charges very slow, but maybe you a different opinion?
@brucemacneil
@brucemacneil 4 ай бұрын
Thanks. I will post a follow up. Electricity and energy is a provincial domain in Canada. The circuit Electrique in Quebec is overwhelming. In the province of Quebec there is completely reliable fast charging absolutely everywhere and adding 110,000 plugs in the next three years. This trip was not in Quebec. Other provinces are far behind. Tesla is very good also though not at nearly the level of Quebec.

Thanks Bruce. Will they change all these chargers over to NACS as manufactures obsolete CCS?
@brucemacneil
@brucemacneil 4 ай бұрын
@@patrickhornacek8593 The approach here is very dispassionate - the problem is GHG emissions and the hazards of transporting and developing hydrocarbon. The goal is to electrify everything - and EV charging is a part of that. If the vehicles need CCS plugs - get those. If NACS - get those. Heat pumps, more of those. My channel is really an effort to scratch the cave wall while addressing the question, "if I have to balance my chequebook why does that not apply to government?" If you look at some of my other vids - there is more explanation of economics, public policy and some examples from Quebec.

I made a follow up vid answering questions in the comments. The Fisker has capability for battery condition - but the version of the software we had did not support it - yet. Similar I think to my Ioniq 5 - no precondition when. I bought it but a later software update added it and a massive 5X improvement in charging times. Petro-Can chargers - there are some boiler plated at 200KW and others at 350KW. The best I ever got in my Ioniq 5 was 250KW which is actually fairly normal.

What you didn't describe is range and time it took to charge with costs. Compared to a hybrid. There's not point in doing those trips if you didn't calculate time and charging costs. I have an Elantra 2013 and I know to go 3500kms in the winter is 5 fill ups. Calgary to Kamloops is 29 to 33 liters of gas. I would imagine winter it's a little bit more. Cost would be 1.60 a liter that would be 6 fill ups for 600kms. I noticed one fill up you charged at was at 25 dollars. So that makes me think an electric vehicle isn't worth the price tag,

Rarely writing a comments but decided to give my feedback on your video. It feels like you've wasted 4+4 days for nearly zero value for your audience. No car specs, no range values, no charging speed, money/time spent charging. Suggesting you watch couple of 'Out of spec' videos, you can definitely benefit from it. No offense but going on such a trip on all season tires is not the most smart/safe idea, could have caused you lots of headaches in such weather.

That is a very extreme situation. Hours on a snow covered highway at speed through a snowstorm. The "adverse pressure graft" that occurs at the trailing edge is a phenomenon on really every vehicle. The accumulation of snow took a full day. I would not let this factor alone dissuade me from purchasing the Ocean.
