Coming back to your channel from time to time and i have to say this: your information is far more practical and useful for the majority of lifters than those hyped up "experts" out there. Lol. I'm saying this as a person who has been lifting weight and playing various sports for almost 15 years (i'm 26). You speak with a real experience and realistic view on how people can approach this subject. Advice for long term goal is much more valuable yet often neglected.

@johnmartin1165

I agree that he does seem to be a good learner which makes it all the more perplexing that he continues to make this type of video consistently. Check out his Hybrid Pullup form video from over a year ago. He asks why people still discourage thoracic rounding and scapular protraction at the top of pull-ups/chin-ups even though these are techniques that help maximize 1rm performance. He is one of the most popular calisthenics channels inclusing Calisthenic Movement. I think he knows exactly why people continue to discourage these techniques. Now, I understand that minds change, but he then eventually continues to post videos where he discourages people from performing pullups that way without much context. It's just incredibly inconsistent and I'd say intellectually lazy and dishonest. Although, I understand that the industry does incentivize that quite a bit. I'd prefer if those who were capable of refraining from creating this type of content to get by financially do choose to just focus on creatong more helpful content.

The reason why standing OHP is a good exercise is because it puts stress on your legs and core stabilizers for balance. This means that you can skip leg day after standing OHP (just joking, LOL). The calisthenics guy thinks that body building is only about muscle growth, but he ignores the component of increasing the bone density. Standing OHP is generally ignored in the bodybuilding community, but this exercise is best done with dumbbells.

I doubt he even made the short tbh. FitnessFAQ has 1.5 million subs. I'm sure he has an editing team that splices videos and text overtop of his voiceovers. That being said.... He's still responsible for every video that gets posted to his channel. He should be reviewing all of his shorts before they get uploaded. But it looks like this one might have slipped through the cracks.
@EnkiriElite
@EnkiriElite Жыл бұрын
It's his voice saying all the words lol so either he blacked out and said all of these things, or he just doesn't understand what he is saying anymore. Having a lot of subs doesn't give you an excuse to produce sloppy content.

@@EnkiriElite I agree. But if you listen to his words, his message is that you shouldn't "cheat" by using leg drive or sloppy form when you are intending to perform a strict OHP....which I'm sure you would agree with. His editor then googled "OHP with leg drive" and your push press video is the first clip that popped up. But by overlaying your video of a PROPER push-press overtop of his words, it makes it look like he's either: 1.) bastardizing the push-press, or 2.) doesn't know what a push-press is. But in reality, I think it just comes down to sloppy content creation. It's likely that he didn't even review the short before it was uploaded.

I think he's talking to beginners in terms of exercise selection for shoulders hypertrophy (sets of 8+ reps), while you're talking to seasoned strength lifters in terms of optimizing vertical load pressing (lots of your footage is doing set of 1 rep). No one is wrong here. But I wonder if would you have made that video if the guy doing a push press wasn't you? "If someone succeeds in provoking, you do realize that your mind is complicit in the provocation?"
@EnkiriElite
@EnkiriElite Жыл бұрын
I do not agree that the z press is a "superior hypertrophy exercise" for anybody, regardless of goals or experience level. So your argument does not hold up here. Every variation I showed myself doing in this video I javelin done for set of 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10+ reps. The fact that I mostly put heavy singles in the video is not relevant.
@fluffyscruffy
@fluffyscruffy Жыл бұрын
@@EnkiriEliteYou do not agree, fine it's your opinion. What is the goal here? Feeling exertion in the targeted muscle and creating an adaptation response? or moving as much as weight as possible using body english? Heavy singles are not for hypertrophy, regardless of the exercise. I think that if you fall over during a z press, then the load is too heavy, and hypertrophy doesn't care of the load. It's the exact same thing with the Larsen press: take out leg drive and increase instability so the targeted muscles work harder. It is humbling, and you will reduce the load. Would you dismiss the Larsen press in the same fashion because you can push a heavier load on the bench press? Lol what you show in your video is absolutely relevant, it is your visual support for your argument. The genesis of your video is based off of that, had your image not been used in the first place by someone else.

That really is a shame man that your clips got taken out of context like that. Very bizarre he chose your clips out everything he could have used available on the internet in terms of ego lifts on OHP. Even if your push press clips were ego lifts, the pure appearance of your form (outside of the leg drive to those who don’t understand it) doesn’t even look bad. Therefore it shouldn’t even look like that much of an ego lift. I realize saying that is weird because we know it’s not an ego lift to begin with. But that’s what’s so baffling as it comes to why he used it in the first place. The overall press still looks clean and stable. You’d imagine he would have rather used a clip that involved someone who used sloppy leg drive and then didn’t even complete the press of the pattern smoothly or properly to begin with. That’s very strange. But as you’ve done in the past, you yet again give a sound and respectable response to back yourself up. I applaud the maturity on the platform considering what your channels been through. Good stuff as always man. Much support! Addition: In my experience, occasionally utilizing some leg drive in even conventional OHP has helped break some plateaus. Just to allow for a few extra solid eccentric reps for a given weight. So honestly, cheating the movement to do some extra reps I feel has it’s place for the exercise area (This being a technique for those who have enough practice with the movement)

Z presses and unsupported seated presses suck BIG TIME for hypertrophy. The worst stability of all shoulder presses variations, you can actually screw up your lower back super easily because of shifts in bar path, and most peoples don't have the harmstring stability to pull it up with a straight back anyway. FitnessFAQ should stick to his lane until he has learned properly about non calidthenics training modalities.

Z-press is way harder on the core than standing and limits how much one can lift. If you want a stable press setup you want to sit on a bench with backrest. Just changes the position of the shoulder joint. Feels better for some people compared to a pronated position. For me, I just use it for the sake of variation.

I do like Fitness Faqs but he has some weird ideas about leg training. His BBR program recommends not training legs and if you do only doing so once a week. I did that program and trained legs twice a week and lived to tell the tale.

Anyone who doesn’t understand a push press, than the the jerk is not even close to comprehensible for so much further away from understanding press related exercises. By observation, the seated press has been more exemplified as risk of injury as well

Coming from someone who religiously follows both of you (and is even running his Body By Rings program!) I gotta say the reel was in poor taste. Even assuming he was unaware of the push press potshot, I should hope he has colleagues around him that are marginally qualified to give lifting advice that wouldn’t be detrimental to his audience. In his defence though, I’m sure he recognizes that there’s value and suitable applications to both training modalities (hence his “Hybrid” program). This is likely more personal anecdote than anything else. But if the education just isn’t there, you should probably just stay in your lane. Just because you have a strong opinion on an exercise doesn’t mean you should tell people to blindly dismiss it when you clearly don’t understand it or know how to perform correctly.

I like z press, but you'll get more gains overall from a strict press with layback. It's just easier to grind reps. Silly calisthenics guy.

i Respect FitnessFAQ's , but i HATE these type of views of "This exercise better" ! . no man , there's application for each : (Standing , Seated , Z , back supported , non back supported , DB , Leg Drive) OHP ! u can't just disregard any of them saying one is better .. each has it's own Pro's and Cons ! it's the same as going to some Oly lifters doing Jerks saying : u guys are ego lifting ugh stop using your legs ! ___________ for me these types of videos is just surface level lack of nuance at best , Click bait and misleading at worse . __________ and if the Standing OHP fatigues the Legs .. then what Z press is ? lol it has a lot of mobility requirements compared to normal Ohp .. Also the Stability aspect could make it inferior for Hypertrophy if we go this route of arguments .

Kinda disappointed in FitnessFAQs with this one. I'll admit I haven't watched a ton of his stuff (and never on Instagram, which from my, again limited exposure has more gen pop lifting content) but what I have seen is legit. Strange how those with big followings always paint standard basic lifts as injurious 🤔

This was extremely unfair of him to paint you as someone who doesn't know what he's doing. I hope he's since reached out but going on your latest push press video I don't think that's happened. Very disappointed in FitnessFAQ. When the bigger channel mess up they have an obligation to correct things and say they made a mistake. Then again, maybe it's because they're bigger they won't a la Athlean X. Very very disappointing.

Can the Push Press still build muscle if I substitute that for the strict press for a couple months. Also, if ai focus on that, will I loose strength on the strict press?
@CristianDumitru
@CristianDumitru Жыл бұрын
It can absolutely be used to build muscle, overhead strength, stability and mobility. Your strict ohp will likely not go down(significantly, anyway) because you will be used to handling heavier loads. However, keeping some strict ohp in your program, wheter it is by using a barbell/dumbbells, is smart, in my opinion, because you will mitigate the risk of having some specific strength decay.
