There's no 'validity' to a retro build, nor should there be. The joy of building and running any gun is enough to justify its existence.

I built a retro M16A1 Carbine from the late 70s and into the 80s. Never saw them very much in the mid to late 80s with the exception of the Air Force Combat Control Teams in Panama but they were GAU-15 carbines. Before the M16A2 I saw a picture of a Ranger carrying an M16A1 carbine from the early 80s when I was in high school. I bought a Colt Carbine Sporter from a guy in Bravo company in my battalion for $200 and took it home on leave for my parents to hold on to while still on active duty. I love the retro guns because with good optics they are still fighting guns.

Nice build! I love the Retro classic AR-15 builds because they are what I learned to shoot centerfire rifle on. My favorite build is a USAF GAU-5/A/A version of the XM-177E2 that I just got done building with a Brownells 11½" pinned and welded barrel assembly. The Gordon Carbine was a Colt 723 with C7 upper and A1 rear sight. Larry Vickers has some videos out about it and so does Paul Gershowitz.

Retro Rifles still have the ability to be a relevant fighting tool. Even the most basic M4gery is a better fighting tool than just a handgun. I prefer the simplicity of basic iron sights and the M16A1 carry handle has became my 1# choice. Being a fellow Native Kansan I built what I wanted instead of conforming to the market. After a small journey I ended up with a 723 carbine style upper on a KP15 with a Schmid trigger, a magpul handguard, and a handguard mounted light. Its light, quick handling, shoots great groups, & works good for taking out coyotes

@@hairydogstail Not sure why some of the best iron sights on combat proven rifle (M16A1 or M16A2) would be considered inferior. I could mount a dot on top of the carry handle and I might, but I like the simplicity of irons. After all it's my Carbine and a continuing project to find whats right for me. I think you forget that proficiency with a tool matters just as much as the tool. Getting more proficient with Irons has made me practice more on my fundamentals of shooting and makes me a better all around marksman.

@@prescotian1500 And optics without etched reticles that are battery powered can fail. Optics can lose zero and are subject to impacts and water. Even if an optic is used there should at least be backup iron sights. Its one of the things I don't like on modern sporter bolt rifles that do not come from the factory with iron sights. Some bolt rifles used to have irons but not any more.

The Carry Handle Gang is strong...I several ARs with A2 uppers. One slick side A1 and just bought another A1 upper for my M733 Heat build. I BELIEVE the retro scene has gained a lot of traction because, 1) MSG Gordon and Blood Diamond. 2) Your everyday American doesn't need all that rail estate to have an effective defense rifle. 3) 300 yard hits can be achieved without a LPVO. 4) very high optic mounts have become the norm due to night vision. So carry handled uppers are inherently ready for 'heads up' shooting. And finally, they're just retro sexy.

I love the old carry handle ARs they are still relevant today IMO. I have done lots of retro builds with surplus parts. Not much into copies of movie guns. If you are thats OK just not my thing. My favorite A1 version is the XM 177 E2. Light handy and very minimalistic.

All things go in cycles. Over the past 2 years optic mount heights have grown until we find ourselves right back to carry handle height. I'm all for it, I hope AR makers start offering more permanently attached carry handle options, I have only managed to get my hands on one and it is set up in a 20" A2 just like the first rifle I was handed in the army. It is a retro build with the LMT M203 replica 37mm launcher on it and I love it.

I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you asking why someone would build a nostalgic retro build when they already own close to a dozen AR’s set up to handle all manner of scenarios aligned to the very latest in fighting theory? Well, because we have more disposable income, and we already have more than what we need in serious go to rifles. If you’re asking what the point of a carry handle is, I think that’s just what I addressed, it allows a rock solid, mounting option for placing an optic higher than what we’ve spent the last 10 years doing.

There's something to be said that these classic guns are lighter and more handier without all that excessive quad rail or even mlok rails. Can just run a C7 style tri rail or something similar up front for accessories like IR Laser, flashlight etc. Modern slings work great on these classic builds. It's amazing how light these older clamshell handguards are and theirs something to be said and taken advantage of because of that especially since rails and such can be attached to them these days.

I have three AR platforms (11.5 pistol, 16" and 20" rifles) ; all of which are flattops which have carry handles. I grew up in the '90s where the A2 and M4A1 were what ARs looked like, and I greatly prefer that aesthetic. They're simple, light, and both fun and easy to shoot. No optics just yet, but I'm thinking a dot or a 1x prism on the 11.5", a 3x on the 16", and a 5x on the 20".

I like the idea of a fixed carry handle upper for the "truck gun" concept where the rifle may be banging around and experiencing daily humidity and temperature swings that could be hard on an optic and associated electronics. It's a robust sighting system that is virtually guaranteed to be right where you zeroed it. An A1 upper would be an even better system for this.

A rifle is not a fashion statement, I have both carry handle and flat top. Yes there are different aspects to shooting the different styles specifically precision target shooting on the range. However filed shooting with either is effective. Rifles are a machine, a tool, I don't paint, I don't give any consideration to looks. Function, accuracy, reliability matter. Build for your needs, short for a truck gun, longer for precision target at range, find a balance for general purpose or SPC.

When I was in we had the M16A1. IMO, there is a reason carry handle rifles are no longer fielded, its because they are obsolete. At the time they were considered "space guns" or "space age" guns. Think about it, you have to attach the scope to the carry handle making it unwieldy compared to having a flattop with a rail. I have detachable A2 style front and rear sights and also a detachable carry handle. I can turn my rifle into a retro style one anytime I want, or I can just remove the handle and put a scope on it. With that said, nothing wrong with making a retro/vintage rifle for nostalgic purposes or for funz.

I'm guessing they went flat top to make picrail mounting of optics with co witnessing easier. There's also the cheek weld aiming you can do with a lower mounted sight.

Great video 👍 I love old school vintage looking AR-15. I only have.300 Blackout AR-15 and I built a Windham Weaponry AR into a retro carry handle gun its my home defense gun. Its literally my cheapest AR-15 it's just to cool to stay in my gun safes lol. There are LWRC and SOLGW Ar's in my gun safe and the old school vintage looking gun gets the home defense role makes no sense 😔.

A2 upper with a carry handle mount does the same thing as a flattop with a Unity Tactical FAST mount. the carry handle setup is probably heavier, but its probably not by much...

Handy rifles like that are made for your hands, not for mounted stuff. Because of that there are no sharp edges to snag on things or hurt your hands. The a2 is made for hands so you can grab it quickly and move it quickly.

Personal opinion here, retro rifles work for what 90% of shooters are setting up their rifles like. Red dot, light and sling. Where they fall short is when adding force multipliers i.e. magnified optics, lasers/ir illuminators etc. I’ll be posting a video on exactly this in the next month or so. Awesome video man, I’ve subscribed
