In part three of my four-part series looking at the bodywork renovation of my 1998 Porsche 911 996.1 Carrera, I reveal my latest purchase… a beautiful CSR carbon fibre ducktail from Porsche specialists RPM Technik.
How is carbon fibre made today? I found out with a trip to MCT Carbon, who are responsible for manufacturing carbon fibre products for a wealth of exotic car companies plus top-level motorsports including Formula One. See how carbon fibre is made and watch as that all-important CSR ducktail is fitted to my Irish green Porsche 911 996.

The car looks good, I like the in depth vid of the carbon factory too. Personally I would have painted the spoiler but to each their own right.

Hi Lee, I'm in love with the Irish Green. And I'm in agreeance with Kanon 08 below in that I would have painted the ducktail in the same colour as the car. It's enough that you know it's made from carbon fibre. Just my thoughts. Cheers Peter

Thank you so much for the kind words! It's proving great fun improving a car that even I didn't like too much when I got it. Cost of the paint will vary according to the prep needed for each car, full pricing for the CSR ducktails is on the RPM Technik website (there are a number of different options so you can choose the one which bests suits you).

I’ve been on the fence considering which way to go with my own 996 rear wing and this looks fantastic. I have to admit that I am in total suspense as to the cost of the thing. Will you ever reveal?

Thank you! I'm so happy with the result, it looks beautiful. Regards costs, I'm reticent to discuss this so publicly. I'm old fashioned in that regard: I don't feel the need to throw around figures like a badge of honour, which seems to be rare for a Millennial. I've simply spent what I can afford, and implore others to do exactly the same, whatever that may be. What I will say is full pricing for the CSR ducktails are on the RPM Technik website - I went for the most cost effective option as you'll see. Paint costs vary depending on the amount of prep work needed. I hope that's an answer you find sufficient, apologies if not.

Nicely made bit of kit. Nice material. To my eyes anyway it looks like bits of so called 'go faster' black accessories we used to randomly buy in Halfords in the seventies and stick all over a Ford Capri. Personally I prefer the clean lines of the back of the standard car with the functionality of a spoiler that raises up when needed and tucks away when not.

My pleasure. With Meteor grey I'd be tempted to go full lacquer, if you can get away with showing that weave then it'd be a shame to cover it. It really is so beautiful to look at.

Superb video, and a truly special part. Well done.. To my mind the all carbon look is a little "ricer" (I'm old) but I get you're desire to show that ultra high quality piece off in all its naked glory. I'd imagine that may lighten up your front end further at speed, so you may want to consider a front lip.

That Carbon rear wing is 2k. I grabbed a original Porsche 996 Turbo wing off Ebay and had it painted Lapis blue Then welded 5" stand off 's on it. drilled through the Top plastic tray and secured through metal backing plate on underside. Factory Part and looks sick. $500 all in.

Note also that if there is more downforce at the back, the front might get light, so adding a lip at the front to counteract this might be wise.

You say that carbon fibre parts are "extemely heat resistant". Can you tell how many degrees it can withstand without harm?
@PITMGN7
@PITMGN7 3 жыл бұрын
Carbon fibre should be fine until temperatures that exceed 200^C, which is perfectly fine for body parts that won't get to those temperatures in any way. Titanium is more heat resistance (600^C) but it's heavier and more expensive, also carbon fibre it's less shock absorbent but doesn't deform linearly
