How to fit al-ko brake shoes used on Al ko and indespension axles fitted to caravans, brian james.

Al-ko brakes are a popular brake used on many trailers including Indespension and Brian james. These brakes are also used on small plant and most UK manufactured caravans. This video shows how the adjuster works in the Al ko brakes.

Hi Well spotted Unfortunately I re assembled with the brakes with the expander the wrong way round the expander should push the shoe that is on the reverse mechanism. The correct way is as it was at the start of the video. Sorry for the confusion.

Great videos Please can you tell me is it possible to check the shoe's for wear without removing the drums on a Alko brake setup.

Thankyou for watching There are 2 plastic bungs on the back of the brake that can be removed to check some areas of the brake shoes. this will give an indication on wear but we don't trust as it is a small localised area on one side you have no indication on the rest of the shoe and if the linings are starting to lift.

Very helpful, thanks. I can't get the drum back on though, even though the adjuster seems fully compressed. I checked that the brake is fully off and expander is therefore contracted. Any ideas?

This can be a bearing stuck on the shaft it may need a puller. I am not sure what you are saying about the expander but if this is open remove the brake cable and push the expander forward if its open through the brake cable hole.

Can you use copper grease on the back of the pads to stop the squealing rather than changing the new pads?

Hi Thank you for watching our Video, I don't think this will work as there was a large batch of shoes that were a problem a few years ago it was something in the lining and all shoes needed changing I understand that these shoes were even damaging brake drums but may be wrong. Do you folks have any recommendations for a breakers bar to break loose the 32mm Alko single use axle nuts

Hi Thankyou for watching our video. The 32mm Al-ko one use nuts should be torqued to 280 - 290Nm so most 1/2" drive approx 3' long Breaker bars should undo them but be sure that you have new nuts and a torque wrench for fitting them. @@TowingAndTrailersLtd thanks for that, yeah have fresh must and a torque wrench rated to 400Nm just wanted something a little longer to make breaking them free easier

Hi For Al-ko axles (not the one in this video Indespension axle) it is recommended to use hand tools to undo the hub nut this is because the stub axle is bolted into the drop arm. if impact tools are used this can cause the stub axle to loosen on the larger brake (230 x 61) this is even more important as the stub axe when loosened can spin and it is not straight as it has a machined caster and camber built in to the shaft. We used to use a good Quality 3' long 1/2" drive bar but we have broken a couple but this is with a lot of use. we now have a 4' long 3/4 drive bar and this is not a problem. if you have an Indespension axle or any other axle with a Welded in stub axle an impact wrench can be used but you will not have the feel and can stand a chance of damaging the threads as it loosens.
