I believe that this is the most wanted information in scandi knife making among the starter knife makers. How to assemble the front bolster, front plate properly and neatly with the blade, especially with the tang without ricasso.
This is MY way of doing it. Someone must have better and simple way of doing it. I have figured it out by myself. No one have taught me to do this like this but I have learnt from other techniques I have seen and spoken with guys and of course, trying by myself.
I believe- again - every puukko knife maker struggles with this in the beginning... Now, forget micro files and use your force :)
My best thank - again - goes to the camera girl, my daughter who made this video possible! Excellent work and co-operation with my hand moves. Dad.
Osmo

Great advice, I was actually just looking at a blade I have, thinking I would need to grind the tang down so I could fit the front plate better. I'm also totally going to lighten the handle side of the plate like you suggest, I don't know why I never thought of that before, its hidden from view anyway.

Great video as always, Osmo. Thank you. As others have suggested, I use thin double sided tape (like double sided scotch tape) on the end of a dowel just larger than the piece I am sanding to protect my fingers. (I wore off all of the callouses!) Perhaps that will work for you too. You could even use the striking end of your custom punching tool. ;) You're lucky to have a great camera girl who does such good work!

Awesome video, just awesome as always, Osmo.Pidän siitä todella. As for a tool to hold the front plate, maybe some water resistant double-sided sticky tape (or a loop of electrical tape) on the top surface and use that to hold it to a small piece flat wood? You might have to replace the tape a few times from the heat, but I feel it would be worth the time to save your fingertips.
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 6 жыл бұрын
LSDEAN13 Thank you buddy for your concern for my nails and finger tops! Hee! This is tricky I know the heat would destroy the glue immediately. I have tried pliers too but I get better touch with fingers than pliers. Thanks, Osmo
@Thorin7.62
@Thorin7.62 3 жыл бұрын
For the machine sanding to flatten the brass, you could temporarily glue a piece of wood to the brass with cyanoacrylate glue. It would work well if you also made a place at the end of the stick to fit into your tang inlet to help keep it together if the heat from sanding causes the glue bond to fail. When finished you can remove the glue with acetone. You may also have some success with hot melt glue, however the heat from the sanding may cause a glue failure as well in this case. I hope this helps you to protect your fingers.

Etc.etc. Ajattelen tässä ääneen kun asiasta nyt juttua.

Great video. I am currently trying to fit a front plate with an even groove to a blade with ricasso. How do I get a flush fit between the blade shoulders and the plate and the back of the plate and the handle. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and finding it hard work!
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 5 жыл бұрын
Jonny War Eagle Even groove for the both sides of the front plate? You only need good fit for the plate on the side of the edge in the groove and shoulders. The handle side will be covered by handle material. Just sand front plate flat before attaching handle material against it. Hope this helps.
@jonnywareagle5189
@jonnywareagle5189 5 жыл бұрын
@@thetopicala thanks so much for the reply. I meant that the groove is uniform along its length. Like a coin slot. The shoulders of the knife sit outside each end of this slot and sit on the surface of the plate itself.

Well done. Couple of questions. 1) I see that your front plate is slightly larger than the width of the blade, some times I see it is pretty much the same width as the blade and advantages of either method? 2) Why is the transition from the tang to the blade slightly curved rather than a crisp square shoulder? Ad a comment, I really don't know how you hold those small parts and work on the belt sander. I always end up loosing a bunch of skin from my thumb ha.
@tornagawn
@tornagawn 6 жыл бұрын
The shoulder from blade to tang is rounded rather than square to avoid stresses on the steel, which might cause a crack if it was 90’.
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 6 жыл бұрын
neilyeag Hey, tornagawn gave your other answer and I dont know if it’s like that. On the other hand I know that those blades have been punched from a metal plate with high energy machine which leaves rounded edges on the tang (other side more than the other). That might be also the answer for your question. Someone who knows better please...
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 6 жыл бұрын
neilyeag About the size of the front plate. I just happen to have certain plates which suit the plate and the higher the plate is it’s then also wider which gives you change to make thicker handle from the first part of the handle if you wanted to do that. No special meaning then. Thanks for asking, Osmo
