I’m running out of room so today I’m fitting some shelves in the greenhouse, re-potting loads of stuff, battling with slugs and preparing to plant out the tomatoes. Our amateur gardening adventures continue!

It might help to put a strip of gravel where the grass is growing up and scatter some sheep’s wool pellets. I put copper tape on my hosta pots this year which has worked well and a sheep’s wool pellet wig on the surface of the soil. Smells grim but soon disperses. Some delicate plants can’t push through the mat it forms when wet. I collect the little bastards in a sealed pot and relocate them to the wild part in the churchyard. Love your calming voice!

Frogs, ducks, hedgehogs and hens eat slugs so the usual advice is to have a pond. We have a wildlife pond so plenty of newts and frogs looking for food. Also try to mix up the planting in the beds with longer term items interspersed with faster crops like lettuce, radish etc and some flowers.

When repotting tomatoes, sunflowers etc grown from seed, repot up to level of seed leaves. Gives more and better roots for stability and water transportation.

Living next to a forest I suffer from a serious slug problem. I have become obsessed with new and innovative ways to get rid of them. From my numerous experiments the best way is going out at night and picking them off, that and a bed of chopped up seaweed!

Basil is a good companion plant for tomatoes. Plant one or two between them.

Cheers! Got some sitting in pots between them. But as it's still a bit chilly at night the Basil seems to prefer it on the bench. They're soft and need hardened up a bit. 😂

Lavender is a Mediterranean plant and needs a very free draining soil and not to much water. The other little plants with the red flowers are a succulents and don’t need a lot off water either.lots off sun will help them.

Crushed up eggshells sprinkled on the soil can help keep the slugs n snails away - they don’t like the texture apparently. Also when repotting plants like your sunflowers you need to tease out the roots a bit to help them grow in the new pot. Looks amazing.

Hi Andy, it is a working progress, planting and potting and soon you will be reaping the rewards of what you have done in the spring, it will soon be lazy sunny afternoons in the green house sitting down hat over your eyes and plenty of Zzzzzzzzz !! . It's looking amazing you are doing a great job I have been enjoying your gardening videos. Did you get your money back on those solar lights you had in the greenhouse. As always a great video, catch you soon Take care

Use some salt sprinkle it around your beds and edges of inside to deter slugs. Plant your flowers in the front or back garden they are ready to go. Keep only the tomatoes and herbs inside the greenhouse everything else can go in the beds. You have room for one of those lettuce greenhouses aside the greenhouse.

Hi Andy, good idea with the shelf. Have you considered using folding shelf brackets? That way you could fold the shelf down when your not using it (saving room). This is what ive done in my greenhouse its very effective.

Thanks for the update Andy, you're doing grand - a victim of your own success, and the shelf looks great btw ! To get your sunflowers (or tomatoes etc) out more easily gently place the stem between your middle and ring finger and invert the pot (also gently) and give it a tap, should come out fine. The potting up trick using the existing pot is great where there's loads of foliage but not really necessary when you've got a single stem and can backfill easily! Lettuce are a cool climate plant so will be happy outside already, plant them around the garden in the gaps, they are quite decorative and are less likely to be eaten by slugs if not planted in a block or row and they won't be happy in a hot greenhouse anyway, they'll soon enough be over so don't forget to keep sowing new batches. Don't worry about the Foxgloves they wouldn't have flowered this year anyway as they're Biennial, but established plants are about to flower now so the ideal time to just scatter some seed around the garden is in a few weeks time ! The Kalenchoe can last for years, as they root really easily in water,, a good way to regenerate as the older plants get a bit sprawling and untidy. They also don't like getting scorched, ours always seem happiest in the bathroom or cloakroom where it's indirect light and slightly humid but don't over-water. I think I'd lay a row of block pavers along the side of that raised bed, they give a tidy mowing edge, are inhospitable to slugs and will save you knocking your mower into the timber and damaging your hooks !
@AndyMac
@AndyMac 22 күн бұрын
Awesome - thank you! Defo need more block pavers. On the to do list! 😁

Beer traps are great for slugs but I would recommend having a few in the raised beds rather than at the end. IKEA sell boot tray things and they're great for putting pots in for watering! Coriander I believe is quite a picky plant and so it may not recover but you never know! Loving following your start in gardening, it's addictive ❤

It's been a long, long time since I looked into it, but from what I recall the copper method for getting rid of slugs and snails isn't effective unless you charge the line. Make an open loop around your plants and connect the two ends to a 9V battery, the battery should have enough amperage to shock anything slimy before it can climb over the wire. It is a non-lethal trap, though, so you might want to pair it with a beer trap if you want something more lethal. You'll need to find a way to keep the battery dry in case the rain corrodes or shorts the terminals, too, but for testing it'll probably be fine without.

Everything should be going out but your warm crops Andy .This is where a cold frame comes in 😂 Its too hot in the greenhouse for most things but I see your getting stuff out .Great score on the pots ! I use beer traps and organic slug pellets sparingly 😊Your spinach will bolt straight away ,it's a winter crop and hates heat 'one for autumn now 🙂

Your putting slug pellets on your plants outside the greenhouse hedgehogs can reach those pellets and any slugs which will nibble your marigolds try broken egg shells around your plants slugs dont like the sharp edges - hedgehogs need all the help they can get they are partial to few slugs - also try beer in a jar sunk into the ground slugs and snails love it - garden looking good well done ❤ like your enthusiasm 😂

Your fingers are turning a bright shade of green Andy. You need some hedgehogs to keep them slugs down. We don't have a greenhouse so our conservatory doubles up as an incubator for a variety of plant plugs which we grow on until about now when they go into garden pots & hanging baskets. Good tip with the Basil. I have two portable Pizza Ovens - both are Ooni's & cook a thin crust pizza in 90 secs. The first one I got a while ago uses wood pellets for fuel. It did a good job but it was a pain to keep feeding the pellets to maintain & control the temperature. As a result I decided to get a gas fired one as well which is much easier to fire up & control. However, I'm rubbish at making the dough 🍕so I rely on frozen ready made dough or ready rolled pizza bases. After having it pruned earlier this year (which I now understand was not a good idea) we have just lost our very old (25 year) Californian Lilac (Ceanothus) tree. It was over 4m tall & had a trunk diameter of nearly 300mm so much larger than the small bushes you normally see. After pruning it slowly shed a lot of it's leaves which had turned brown. A quick test of some branches revealed no green sap wood at all so I guess it had run it's course & helped on it's way by the pruning. I removed all the small branches & foliage & have run some string lights through the remaining skeleton. I will also grow some climbers up through what remains of the tree which will save having to dig it out of the border.
@AndyMac
@AndyMac 22 күн бұрын
Fantastic stuff! Sad news about the Ceanothus though 😭. I've heard they can be twitchy about pruning. We have a bread maker and it also does pizza dough so gonna give that a try. Great vid here about making pizza dough... although he's using a seriously expensive mixer 😁. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hciJq5egy8q6c5c.html

Hi Andy, I live down the road in Stockton-on-Tees and to stop slugs eating my stuff I have a old tin of axel grease that I paint onto the sides of the raised beds, as long as I don’t use soil or compost from the garden my slug problem is not too bad. Hope this is of use.
