My 127 was broken into twice (whilst it was sitting in my own driveway) by removing those corner windows and reaching in for the door handle. I fitted grilles on the inside to prevent any further attempts.

Not criticizing, but if the joint it tight, then water is not going to get in, second, what damage is water going to do as it is in rubber? Those quarter glass rubbers always crack where there is the large bow at the bottom and water gets in there - but it does not get in the vehicle, but allows moss etc to grow in there

Have you ever done similar to replace the sliding rear glass with a single piece? And if I tried it, what’s the gap required between glass and body to accommodate a seal? Eg if I get some glass cut locally in the UK? I know there are kits out there for this but they want £350 (🇨🇦$600). I’d rather pay £10(🇨🇦$17) for a seal and get some glass cut - auto spec obviously.

Heh, by coincidence I was just talking to somebody about this job yesterday. You take the back windows out of a Hardtop and flip the rubbers around (filler strip on the inside) so a thief can't pop out the window and open the back door. The question is, would this be possible with a pickup, or does the curved glass mean the sealing strip deforms so much that you'd struggle to get the filler strip in from the inside?
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
It can can be done - but it is frustrating to say the least! Not much space to get the filler tool in Besides if a tea-leaf wants to be in he will knife the rubber We had a different society in the late 50's when these tops were designed!

@@BritannicaRestorations You're not kidding. Have you seen the recent stories, from the UK, where a commuter leaves their Defender in a car-park to catch a train into London and it's stripped when they get back in the evening? Wheels, doors, bonnet, windows, seats, dashboard etc. All gone! If I had a Defender, these days, I'd definitely be looking at some kind of "security bolts" for all external hinges and fittings, as well as some way to secure the windows. Least I don't have to worry about that quite so much with a Disco.

G'Day Mike. Nice sweet and simple demo matey, very nice. Just 2 small questions, what the hell do you call those tools and where the smeg do I get them? :D My 130 cab quarter window seals are as brittle as sheet ice. If I blow on the window I think they'll pop right out! So yeah, another thing to do on the list when I can get around to it, but as you so aptly demonstrated, right tool for the right job.

Fantastic video as always mike. I want to try to do my alpine windows on my TD5 defender ... is it the exact same way? Iv never done windows before but your instructional videos have inspired me to try. How meany windows do you think I’ll go threw before I get it right 🤔🙃think I’ll order a spare or 2.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
Tip is if you are not familiar get a spare rubber seal they are so easy to cut through on the ends if you do not use enough lube and the tool digs into the rubber when fitting the glass = which is why I use WD40 as it gets everywhere You need the tools as it makes life so much easier If you get the glass hook on eBay or the like, make sure the end is nice and round and not square as this will cut the rubber - just a matter of filing it round and smooth - other than that - have a go! It can be frustrating but rewarding once done!

Regarding WD40, now don't choke on your Werther's Original, I don't care what people use. We have all seen the cans with the flip up straw, now, here is the good bit, they do one with a flexible metal straw, they are bloody brilliant. Yes they charge more for them but here is the tip, buy one and then swap the top over with a normal cheaper can when it runs out.
