Nice job, If I have a stock fan shroud with heater flaps I have always wired them open here in FL when I lived out west in Oregon I made damn sure they operated properly. Many people will tell you they are always needed but..... Ive been doing it 30+ years and my engines last and don't have overheating issues. call me we can talk about the pro's and cons for hours! 🤣

Great minds think alike! Thanks for the shoutout, it's always great to welcome new people. I like the aluminum you used to avoid messing up the chrome plating. And that torque spec... I've had some lug bolts that met that standard. Thanks again for the mentions- looking forward to the carb setup!

Clean build brother!! I think I may have had a set of flaps at one point in time... They were tied open with zip ties.... I got all new after 36hp style fan and shrouds... That was such a pain!! I did mine all black, it showed every slip, scratch graze & tool drop... Touch up paint fixed that!! Now all that hard work is covered in road grime & oil!! Keep up the great work brother!!

Old German mechanic told me those thermostats are only to heat engine and in winter and don't even work till temp is at 25⁰ outside. What happens is all the linkage gets dirty and gets stuck closed and engine overheats because flaps are stuck closed. Said take them out and never use and I live in New England. Never had a problem.

KSFWG that’s why none of my engines have chrome.... or any chrome on the bug for that matter. Aaron said the black ones are on massive backorder so he got the chrome one for now. Once it fires up for the break in and I do a once over, change the oil and adjust the valves it’s his to keep clean.

Hi, Gary, again very nice and informative video ! At the moment, I am also battling with one of these aftermarket shrouds, same as your, just not chrome but plain black. Have the same issues as you with fitment, also had to trim it to get it to sit kind of properly... Have one question there though : you can trim the bottom of the shroud where it contacts the case, to get it to sit lower, but isn't how high or low the shroud sits, in the end determine by the alternator/fan assembly ? I worry that if I trim the shroud enough to get it to sit properly on the case and cylnider shrouds, the opening for the fan and the boltholes won't line up anymore.
@VWJawbreaker
@VWJawbreaker 26 күн бұрын
@@michaeltetzner5847 glad you enjoyed the video. You are correct, the fan will determine where the shroud sits. It’s best to mock things up as a complete assembly and go from there. You may need to trim the lower part that sits against the case of the alternator doesn’t sit flush with the stand. It’s trial and error.

@@VWLifeVW I've bought some complete old barely functional engines to have extra parts like this. I had never done the aftermarket 36HP style shrouds and since I wasn't running heat, I though I'd try one since they can have a clean look. But man, it was a nightmare from the moment I start fitting that. It all looked great during initial mock-up and such, but when it came to the real details of install it was just the one in the video, but I have far less skills (and patience) to deal with it.. i1.wp.com/zuczek1302.com/wp-content/uploads/2019_AS41_Build/Day16/AS41_Build_Day_16_8.jpg?resize=780%2C439&ssl=1

Hey Gary ! All or almost all the of the aftermarket stuff like the alt. pulley and the fan hub fall on ? I had a 63 bug when I was 15 and to get the gen pulley off I ended to have to barrow a puller to get that thing off. Now you ? about it at the parts house and their reply is = the key way hold it on . That is why they end up rattling the key way . What is a VW driver to do . I did find a German black pulley that I will need to beat it on the alt. shaft . but it was # 3 the chrome one and gold one I gave away---- trash
