I produced this movie and so proud of it even to this day. Was not easy getting it done in the early 70s. Great story behind its development. The USIA wanted to distribute it world-wide. I would only give them permission if they agreed not to change the commentary. They could translate but not change. They wouldn't agree and I did not give them permission. I premiered the film at NY's MOMA's Annual Spring Festival. They were doing a retrospective on Romare Bearden. It was quite a night.

I did my PhD dissertation on films by the U.S.I.A. about African Americans and civil rights. I wasn't able to see this one in the late 1990s when I went to National Archives to view as many films as I could (about 100). You can read the dissertation on line by Googling my name and the word "democracy" - Just FYI -- it's 600+ pages and may have a few insights that are interesting for you.

UNFORTUNATELY FOR YOU CATEGORIZATION MUST EXIST...AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE - LIFE AND STRUGGLE IS WHAT DEFINES BLACK ART AS A BROAD MEDIA AND GENRE CATEGORY AT THIS TIME WHEN THERE IS NO HISTORICAL STANDARD WITHIN BLACK ART GENRE WISE. BLACK COLLECTORS, INVESTORS AND AGENTS ARE A POST CIVIL RIGHTS DEVELOPMENT. FURTHER CATEGORIZATION IS NECESSARY AND COMING BECAUSE WITHOUT IT, AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTISTS ARE SUBJECT TO THE LIMITATIONS OF EUROPEAN AESTHETICS OVERALL.
