there's only one book that's shaping everyone's life now - "1984".

"Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson -- written in 1962 , has remained amazingly prescient. A marine biologist and environmentalist, she had an impact on a generation that promptly "forgot" her warnings.

Wrong title. Unless you meant "our British contemporary-very-local-world." Chilean librarian here. I thought we were going to see the influence of the Bible, Principia, On the Origin of Species, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Confucius and such. The only book you mention I had known something about was The Feminine Mystique. And I am a librarian...

I agree - from New Zealand - (my mother was a librarian) - I agree with your list far from than theirs - these books - what?!? Bible yes, Principia yes were on my list along with Shakespeare - and Darwin - instead a fricking FOOD book!!! I'm completely confused about who made this list and how they choose these random unlikely books

I was mighty surprised, too. Being a doctor of Applied Linguistics, I am not strictly an expert in history or literature, so I hoped to learn something new and interesting, but then I suspected I would recognize a title or two... I thought, like others, of the Bible and the Quran, but also of Copernicus' "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium", Platon or Homer (not strictly books, I know, but Illiad and Odyssey have been published since). Maybe even The Code of Hammurabi. Books that have changed the world, not a generation. The title is most certainly misleading and the task of choosing just 5 books that have changed the world (rather than 10, perhaps) - too ambitious.

@@IndianJone Greetings. Sorry for the delay, I didn't get a notification. Well, to become a librarian you must do what most people does to become a professional, go to college/university and get your degree. It depends on where you live and the possibilities to access to high education, of course. Two things: -If you really want to be a librarian, you can afford the career (or get a scholarship, whatever available) and where you live there are several entities that offer the courses, first think if you are interested more in the cultural aspects or in the administrative aspects of a library. Different schools offer different approaches to the subject; get the one that better suits you. -If, for whatever reason, you cannot get the title of librarian by the usual way, go to the libraries in your city and ask the people what they do and how they got the job. There are plenty of teachers, journalists, secretaries and others who learned the ropes of the profession while working at a library, sometimes they can validate their experience for the title. At least, you could get a job in a library and start from there, if there is possibilities of advancement. But don't forget, this is a profession, and there's lots of technical things to learn, even more now with all the computers and the Internet. Good luck ✌

It's over generalisation to say 'world' . What we see here is a classic colonial attitude. Where the knowledge systems of other cultures are discredited .
