Human beings are as varied as snowflakes! That's why test riding as many as possible is so important. Whenever I see someone on the recumbent trikes Facebook groups asking what trike is best, I always tell them they will be much better off test riding as many as they can until they find the one that fits them best, and don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. It's a major purchase. Maybe in a different universe, buying a trike would be as easy as buying a rubber stopper for a sink drain.....one size fits all. But taking the time to find the right one for your body is worth it when buying a trike, because it's a never-ending fun machine. Nice video, David. Stay healthy and safe out there!

Utah Trikes has support handles for sale that you can install to assist getting on or off your trike.

Sounds like you've been through a lot sir. Good video I never took into consideration the power loss with suspension and that softer ride really adds a lot to the overall cost!💰

You Sir, are an inspiration to us all!! Thank you for your insightful knowledge about trikes. I have ridden all sorts of bicycles including four(4) different electric bikes in the last five years. However, since just recently I have become handicapped due to an accident in July of this year.

Thanks for the great video David. I am a Type II diabetic and have had my left knee replaced 3×. I also have bilateral hip replacements and a fused lower lumbar spine. My neurosurgeon placed a spinal neuro-stimulator in me three years ago to control pain. Degenerative arthritis is not fun. I also have had fatty infiltration into my liver which has progressed into Stage 1 Cirrhosis 15 years ago. But I still ride my recumbent trike as often as possible! This year I added the Shimano Steps (E-assist) and it is a godsend. It helps me to continue to move Forward!

Yes to the fenders, need to get rid of the slick that the trike comes with for the drive wheel ( get off the trail you will sit and spin), I got extenders from Terra Cycles to help get in and out and it allows you more options to hang stuff from and add. Also the neck rest, also the wrist rest. A electric horn besides the old bike bell. I am 71 and rode bicycles for years but my father asked me one time, " have you ever checked between my legs after a bike ride?" I said no but I looked and was shocked. I have about 20 different seats and they all did the same thing to my bottom. Now that I'm a diabetic, on blood thinners ( or slickers ) had L3, L4 and L5 pinned and screwed ( 2 pins and 6 screws ), Is Corporal tunnel surgery on both wrist, right ankle pinned and fused. Also have had the MAC Disease ( which is a little bug that eats your lungs from the inside out. I have to be careful of the dust of the limestone bike, footpath of the Rock Island Trail in Illinois. I love my Catrike Dumont and hope I will never need another.

I love your videos...you are an inspiration to everyone. Suspension seems to be a big deal for alot of people. I believe it is a non issue if you are riding on paved trails. I live in Florida and there are so many paved trails and more being created every day that suspension is unnecessary. It adds weight to the trike that can be significant. I chose a green speed magnum because it fit me perfectly. I love the fact that it folded down so I could get it in the back of my toyota prius. I could take all the tires off very easily. The other thing was the seat was adjustable height wise. It has been a total joy. I do recommend trying out all trikes. but if you have certain difficulties getting in and out I recommend very highly the greenspeed magnum

Comments below from Duane Phillips bring up the subject of e-assist. I would say that could be the sixth item on your list considering how popular that is right now. One manufacturer put sales of e-assist equipped trikes at 40%. I had my TerraTrike Gran Tourimo for one year then added e-assist. What a difference. The distance I rode was reduced because of hills but now that is not a problem. The only thing to manage is preserving the battery charge.

ty David! my wife and I bought 30-speed Catrike 559s this weekend, and so far, we love them! Raleigh is hilly, but no problems with even the steepest slope just drop down into the lowest gear, and up we go... up steeper, longer hills than we ever could on our 7-speed bikes

Good points. My Catrike Dumont folds but is heavy to lean over, lift up and load when folded. Easier to use a ramp and bigger vehicle. My Catrike 700 is longer, but with my boom extended I need to slide the passenger seat of my Toyota Highlander to fit the in the back. Don't forget tires and tire pressure (within reason) can be adjusted for comfort level. I'm about 20% faster riding my 700 (It's rougher, but for a 100-mile ride I want to finish under 6 hours). Meeting with friends for a causal ride, I take the Dumont.

Thank you for sharing. I was hoping you'd get shock absorbers that can be locked out like in most MTB. But definitely they'd add one to the overseen weight which can drop your efficiency a little.

There is allot to consider when selecting a new trike. My first trike was a 700, I had dreams of riding with the roadies. I soon found myself modifying my trike into a touring machine. The efficiency loss you speak about with full suspension is only a consideration if you are racing. I feel faster on a scorpion because I find I don't brake or brace for rough sections of the road. Where you are going to ride is key a 700 will be slow offroad simply because if you try to take sections that are to rough to fast it can bounce you right out of the seat. Now I am putting together my second trike after the movers totaled mine, I have ridden several and have zeroed in on a Scorpion FS 26. I am sticking with a touring machine, if I decide to try to go fast again I will buy a Cruzbike V20. As far as fenders go even on regular roads there are all kinds of nasty things you don't want on you fenders were one of the biggest upgrades I loved that I thought I did not need until I put them on.

As a trike addict I have found that I need more than one trike. I like one for fast riding with friends and one that climbs well because i live for part of the year in a very hilly area. The other is for more leisure riding, running errands and just fooling around. I suppose that there are hybrids that do both reasonably well, but for me I need two.

I would add electric assist or no electric assist. I started without but I live in and around a lout of mountains so added an electric assist to help me use my recumbent more.

The suspension thing is interesting. I never notice any problem with my ICE Sprint RS 20's rear suspension robbing of power but I have purchase a new trike an Azub Ti-Fly 20 and the rear suspension with an air shock can really do that in a big way if it is even a little soft for the weight being carried. The front suspension really improves handling on rough trails. In hindsight I should of put it on my ICE. I do a lot of touring and I am looking forward to use the Azub when I fly as it packs down smaller than the Ice and Azub sells a padded soft case which I have. I got into triking as I was unable to ride a Bicycle due to a head injury I suffer in an MVA. With that rear 20" I run Rohloffs an I have never had a problem with braking hangers which wasn't true of my first trike also an ICE Sprint rs 20 with a derailleur which ran a medium length cage. Great Video, I had no idea that some of the recumbent bikes could be folded. As for me I have an Addmotor recumbent bike (m360), which sits pretty high off the ground. Of course it has no shocks, however, it makes up for that with the 4 inch fat tires. PS. Mine is an e-bike.

Suspension out of my price range so go t a memory foam pillow at Costco 9.95, works well mostly. Paved roads in Salt Lake city are terrible, even in a car it's like 4 wheeling. Hpvelotechnik trikes have lots of accessories for disabities especially for getting up from the seat. Have gekko fx, can be fairly upright so never needed a headset.

We bought a Scarab trike and a Rans Wave two wheeler when my wife's knees started to hurt on long rides. Now, we don't have that problem. We've moved from Scarab, who quit making trike recumbents, and moved on to Catrike 559 models, so I can fold them into my Toyota Rav4.

Your final consideration hardly applies in a country like mine that has less dealers in recumbent trikes than the fingers of one's right hand. Frustratingly so. Thank you for posting David, an excellent commentary.

So funny, I tried a ICE Sprint X and was ehhh... it was like steering a whale... not exciting or agile. Then I tried a Catrike 559 with emotor and it was so fun, glue to the road, cornered so well, steered great and was nimble! It was fun!

I agree with the five choices you spoke about but I also think pedal assist should be considered my foot got a opened wound on it last time out and the mid drive brought me home I DONT use it very much but but when I do I have to Another great video thanks David

I guess there is another consideration to add to your list, electric pedal assist or not? I've just ordered a mid-drive for my kmx. I've built ebikes in the past with hub motors, fitting a mid-drive is going to be an interesting challenge. Keep the videos coming.

Get a foldable trike most trains will NOT TAKE A TRIKE they take up a lot of room 😒 they will take them folded. You can on some trikes buy extention bars to attach to your handle bars making it easier to get up and out and to lower your self In to the trike seat.AZUB TRICON 26 FOLDS IN TWO WAYS WITH OR WITHOUT WHEELS VOTED BEST TRIKE 2015 and still exceptional.
