Before Sam Spade chased the black bird in The Maltese Falcon and Nick and Nora Charles stirred their first martinis in The Thin Man, the Continental Op walked early twentieth century San Francisco's mean streets for the Continental Detective Agency. Dashiell Hammett used his own experiences as a Pinkerton operative to lend realistic detail to this creation. The difference is that volunteer readers read these books like they are reading it silently to themselves as opposed trying to act all of the parts. How do you read books?

"op" is short for operative, an agent of a detective organization.

Sorry, I don't think he is the best narrator. His voice is too educated, too cultured. These characters need a rougher, lower-pitched, less educated voice. My imagination cannot evoke the correct ambience with this narrator.

Stereotype. There are people whose speech is lovely for a variety of reasons not related to formal education. Generations ago people at every level we’re expected to speak well. Sure there were regional patterns and colloquialisms or slang, but clear speech was taught and practiced widely. Rough speech is as much tone as the bad grammar of the “ dead end kids.”
