Thanks for this video, this one hit home. Seems like I come back to the basics often, especially with shooting infrequently. Really like the small goals on a shoot, I’m trying to do that more with sports I’ve shot numerous times...and what can I do different that others might not be doing. I struggle with the connections piece, don’t want to come off as asking for something when I feel like I don’t have much to give back to that person that I’m reaching out to. Big goal for me, shoot higher level sports other than HS. Had a taste of NCAA D1 football and basketball and loved it. My struggle, no college affiliation to contact and not to blame everything on Covid, but that really feels like it put a halt on any traction I might have had from last year. I’m know I’m not the only person out there that’s doing this “on the side” with a full time job (outside of photography), spouse, kids, etc. Each time listen to a video, podcast, etc, people talk about college kids or getting internships...that ain’t happening for people like me. So I’m now batting with a 0-2 count facing a lights out closer...at least that’s what it feels like. Anyway, love the videos and the way you present the content that you do!

Totally understand where you’re coming from. Stepping up your quality and efficiency will help you hit that next level. Also those little goals is where you can find ways to make portfolio images to show when you get an opportunity. A ton of people I know also do sports “on the side”. Makes it harder to do the networking etc. but that’s why it’s good to say hi to the other people around at every event you do make it to. That’s how people suggest others and maybe that local newspaper photographer knows someone else etc etc. it is a hard balance between being needy and wanting to connect. No perfect answer but I always try to provide value to others somehow. Whatever that might mean.

@@BrettCarlsen Thanks for the response and feedback, I really do appreciate it. I know I can be doing more at events to network, so I’m definitely going to be working on that. Even if I get the cold shoulder :) Kill em with kindness, right, haha. Always looking to improve and your vids have helped fuel that even more.

Very glad to hear it. Even a simple video takes quite a bit of work so I’m always very excited to hear people get something out of them!

Nice Job!! Most college kids can't afford gear, their parents can. My student shooter is no where close to being able to afford $10k worth of gear

@@BrettCarlsen I liked how it applied across different skill levels, too much of the content on KZfaq (especially as it pertains to growth) is for novice shooters. I particularly enjoy your content because its not a "tips for new sports shooters", etc. content, but higher-level things that in-part come from your degree at RIT (especially for someone at a school like me (UMich) without a photo program). I'd say in terms of length, it was a bit on the long side, but I do enjoy the personal stories and tangents so I guess that evens out.

Thanks man. Helps me figure this stuff out. Definitely need to work on making things shorter and quicker haha. Maybe that’s where writing a script comes in.

Brett, thanks for the video. Great tips! I have been loving photography for years. I have pro level gear, because I dream about making more money at photography. I’ve done weddings, high school Seniors, events, and such basically to help fund my passion. I’ve always told myself, I don’t have the time to really make the effort to do this for a living. Now, I’m a retired Firefighter/Paramedic that is still fairly young and would love to pursue photography at a higher level. Any advice you have to offer on how to make that happen. I would love to get into more sports and wildlife photography and I’m never probably going to do another wedding ever again. I have a website www.mikeklarich.com and just looking for any thoughts you may have on how to proceed... Thanks in advance, keep the videos coming.

Hey Mike. Well I’d first say there is more money to be made with weddings and seniors than there probably is with sports or wildlife (though I’ve never pursued wildlife). It’s an incredibly difficult career to do full time. I’ve been at it 10+ years now full time and every month is still a grind to find the next shoot etc to pay the bills. It’s easier than it was 10 years ago but that work never stops. I think that’s seriously the hardest part. People expect that side of things to go away at some point and it never ever does

@@BrettCarlsen Thanks for your time, and honest assessment of what I it’s like to make a living as a photographer. Luckily, I have a pension for a steady source of income to insulate me from the stress of constantly trying to find work. My goal is to have photography gigs I enjoy and earn some money doing it. I don’t like weddings, too much herding cats and rush, rush, rush. I like taking portraits, but I know that can become stagnant (same thing over and over). Looked into reality photography, but not much money to be made unless your doing several properties per day and spending hours in photoshop. I love sports, and nature. My favorite images are always in those genres. Thanks, again Brett, keep up the great work, awesome imagery! Subscribed, keep the great content up, I’ll be watching.
