It's no lie that I visit Shugborough Hall a lot. I went to school about 5 minutes away from the estate and a lot of my childhood was spent romping around the grounds. Even with all of my visits there are still some great and perplexing mysteries that stick in my head.
My two favorite are the often talked about Shepherds Monument. There are loads of videos and articles on this topic, so you can find something even more in depth on this one,
The Cat's monument is a much more personal one. A favorite monument of mine that used to be hidden in much more overgrown garden and wa rarely visited. There is little mention of it elsewhere so the local stories fascinate me. Now the National trust has developed the area and it;s finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Aye, I grew up just over the road so it's full of good memories for me. The national trust have actually done a good job, especially in the gardens.

I think I'll try and get a bit more folklore stuff in. Still like doing my walks but these little five minute videos are fun to do.

Awesome! Theres something rattling around in my brain that a man wrote a book claiming the shepherd's monument pointed to the location of a shipwreck and he was tryijg to raise money for an expedition? Cant think where I saw that now. Great video!

A lot of the rumors are based on Admiral Anson either finding and burying treasure or getting information from one of the ships he plundered about the location of a treasure. This treasure is then either standard Spanish treasure or the grail in for fanciful tales. After returning to England the Admiral went into politics and his wealth and secret information went to his elder brother Thomas who wasn't much of an adventurer. Instead he partied and built up Shugborough with his wealth and commissioned the Shepherds monument as a code for any of his descendants who might want to go chasing the legend.

If I had to put money on it. I'd probably say it was a dedication to Thomas' wife. But thats far less exciting than a holy grail story.
