Giant ornamental onions 'Allium giganteum' and their hybrids and cultivars are among my favourite mid-spring flowering plants. However there can be issues with them only producing leaves and no flower heads! So in this video, English horticulturist Simon explains his five mistakes to avoid when it come to planting these wonderful bulbs.

Hi Maggie, giant allium become available in the autumn. If you can't find them in your local garden centre you will be able to purchase them online from a specialist retailer. Simon

Hi Gavin, I usually pick these up in our local garden centre however the bulb sizes seem to be getting smaller each year. Nowadays I but extra large from online retailers. There is a short window of availability but there are normally plenty around come the autumn. Kind regards Simon

Hi Janice, it sounds like you have just the right growing conditions. Mine have had all their leaves ripped apart by slugs, but they should be in full flower in a week or so. Simon

Bought one of these from a garden centre last year, it seemed to go great guns, We only have a pot garden, facing East in Macc, UK. Now it has started to go again, but we have three, 2 about six inches already and one pretty feeble one. I re-potted the first two together (as the other hadn't appeared.) I didn't know whether I was going to find seperate bulbs or just one, doing the job and a bit scared of killing it. So, based on the vid (and thanks for that) would the advice be to get in there again and seperate them and pot individually? As is obvious, I'm a bit of a buy, put it out there and whatever will be will be type of "gardener". Any help welcome.

Hi Dan, these would have been lifted and their bulbs separated for potting while they are dormant at the end of summer to early autumn. So for me I would leave them as they are and separate once the dried stems detached naturally from the bulb at the end of summer. Kind regards Simon

I know that giant will get smaller as they divide, but how can I get some huge flowers again?

Great question. Once the bulbs die back in the summer, carefully lift them out the ground, separate the bulbs, and replant. If left, it's the competition between the bulbs for nutrition that causes the flowers to reduce in size over time. Simon

Will the bulbs work like they are. I guess that's 3 bulbs

Hi Cindi, I was expecting full bulbs rather than split bulbs, but that's a risk with mail order. They should still give a good bloom in the spring (fingers crossed). Simon

Hi Procrastimaker, and thanks for getting in touch. Don't worry, bulbs should be available again in about 4 months. Lorna already has a list for me. Simon
