Bought a 190D (Baby Benz at the time) in 1985 and while the steering was heavy, but typical of Mercedes it was a great car and I owned it for 18 years, selling it privately, but I'd not be surprised if it's still running about without trouble.

Had a W116 350SE from 1978, it was a perfect car. Never had problems with it. It had a 4 speed manual and Pullman interior. That V8 was so smooth and perfect sound. Drove it for 4 years. Sold it pretty good. But mis it still.

So glad to finally hear a positive comment about the 380SL. I love mine to death and it’s a wonderful vehicle, but the crap you seem to catch on the forums from 450/500/560 owners is entirely misguided, unnecessary, and genuinely annoying.

I've got a w126 380sl. Love the engine and the sound at high rpm. Sounds like it wants to be American but has enough of a European sound to it to create something very unique. Gotta watch for timing chain guide rails and oiler caps, but pretty much other than that I have no complaints with it. Not very powerful, but it still feels very strong. It never has to rev high, nor does it ever sound like it's struggling. And it's incredibly smooth. I don't drive it often enough so when I come to a stop it is kinda startling because there's no vibration like there is with any other car. I don't know why (mostly) EVERYONE thinks older Mercedes are bulletproof. They aren't. They need maintenance, but when properly maintained they are very durable and incredibly reliable.

You being a wrencher, you better than most would know about just how reliable a model was. I loved my 190-E, w/o the Lotus Plant. It was a brilliant design, and poured out power even with its 2.3 liter, and 4 sp auto trans. It's all about how much care was taken of your Benz. Bought a couple budget Benz's, and they were money pits. Best wishes in your efforts.

Hi Pierre love your site and your no nonsence approach, i drive a W201 190D, ,this car doesnt have a lot of the bells and whistles found in the newbies ,but it is an almost beautiful thing to look at, it drives with an amazing nimbleness and great agility ,very well sorted suspension, I live in central Queensland Australia with some really bad roads and that little car takes the good with the bad in its stride. plenty of long miles here mean the 5 cyl desiel purrs with great fuel economy . Could I afford a 500SL I might secumb , but i know I wouldnt be any better off,I have owned so many cars but I could happily finish my driving days with the baby Benz.

About 190s... I quite like the 2.6 versions, if you can find one that's been deently cared-for and doesn't have a ton of miles, same for the diesel. I don't much care for the 4-cylinder ones, except the 16-valve, and you sure aren't going to find one of those for cheap! W 108s are great cars if you can find one the metal termites haven't ravaged. I'd opt for a 420SEL with conventional suspension over thre 560, just because of the suspension. I actually own one of these, and it's a terrific car, very reliable and not too costly to run. As usual, good advice...

I got the Mercedes bug when I had a 1994 W124 E280 update model here in Australia, with 473,000 kays, presented to me for $2,000 Australian dollars. Needed new brakes ($355) but the rest of the car was absolutely immaculate. Even the cams were like new & a heap of stuff had been replaced in it's long life. Sure, the plastics break after 26 years & it had bio-degradable wiring in one area, but the leather was superb & it has everything that opens & shuts. The ride & driveability are second to none!

The kicker for the purchase was his comment that " we just changed the fluids every 12 months ". It handles like a dream. 3rd gear is in constant use on hills. She always idled on 5 but ran on 6 cylinders. I started using synthetic merc approval oils and now she idles on 6.Stuck ring on number 4?.Changed the trans fluid every 50 000 kms. Good stuff! Love these videos. I am curious as to your decision to mention the 300se w126 on the first video, and the 560sel w126 on this video, but leave out the 420sel altogether. Around the midwest, the 420sel seems to be one of the best values, perhaps of any car, period. I have seen running, driving, rust free examples for around $1k, and I will soon be rescuing a rust free 1987 that has a broken transmission cooler line, but runs great otherwise for $500. Unfortunately, these cars are so cheap that they often fall into the wrong hands and are poorly maintained. Thank you for all that you do!

Yes, everyone like to bash the "baby Benz" but the reality is that they were great cars. But with any entry level model, those will probably be the ones to receive the least amount of proper service hence might cost some money to get back to perfect running condition. I know many people that own 190E's that love their cars with a passion. Not everyone that wants a great Mercedes Benz wants a V8. I love the great fuel economy of the 190's.
@ACabral711
@ACabral711 5 жыл бұрын
I don't get why people bash them, they're fantastic cars. I drive mine 60 miles every day and it rarely gives me issues. Also people like my mechanic who complain that they're terrible in the snow don't know what good tires are because I've never had an issue in the winters of CT and PA and drove the car through a blizzard once. Parts are cheap for them right now too, especially from Mercedes Benz of North America. I've always thought my 190E rides better than the W126 I used to own as well.
@klwthe3rd
@klwthe3rd 5 жыл бұрын
I would love to find the "holy grail" of the 190's being one with a manual transmission. They come up for sale from time to time but they usually are pretty beat up when they do. The 5 speeds are a rare breed but make the 190's drive so much more lively than the 4-speed autos that most people opted for here in the United States. I also prefer the 2.3 four-cylinder to the 2.6 6-cylinder for the added fuel economy and lower cost of maintenance.

My top five good value classic Mercedes are: The C107 is an excellent buy as the convertibles are more like 3 - 4 times more expensive for the equivalent spec. Can seat 4 adults and their luggage in comfort and style Also the R129 500sl is an extremely underrated car as it has an amazing driving experience for a very little outlay. Those things are also built like brick outhouses. Happy days if you can actually bag a 600 V12. Next the W124 convertible is a very elegant and stylish car with a classic feel yet modern technology. Prices are beginning to climb so act now to grab one while they’re still affordable. Then we have the C126 coupe. Very stylish, big, comfortable with an amazing ride. Big V8s might drink a bit but you’re only ever going to have a classic merc as a second car in addition to your daily driver. Watch for rust around the wheel arches and rear windscreen but other than that, it’s all good Last but not least, the C140 coupe of the early ‘90s. The V12 is the one to go for as it’s the best equipped and most powerful. Also how many people can say they have a Mercedes V12 on their driveway?

The 190E/D are amazing cars for what they cost.....*IF* you can find properly maintained examples. granted they aren't as sure footed or powerful as a W124 (although the 6 cyl W201 is an exception where power is concerned), but they weren't nearly as expensive either. The biggest issue I've seen with them and the W124 chassis cars that is that they were so well built and so trouble free that most of their required preventative maintenance was seen as suggestion rather than requirement by owners. Which largely explains why enthusiasts and collectors are having such a hard time with the bulk of them now. They have their quirks, but in my limited experience every chassis from every era does.

yes, I see the same issue with both the 201 and the 124..and when something does go wrong most of the time their owners dump them as fast as they can after using them up.

I am surprised that the Heckflosse didn't make it on the list. They've got pretty much the same suspension and design as the W108, just with different styling and engines (and lower prices). And there's hardly anything more reliable and durable (and cheap to operate) than the legendary 190DC and 200D with the diesel engine and kingpin front-end. I also picked up (for a good price) a rust-free gray-market W110 230 with the Zenith carbs and a four on the floor, and it performs notably better than the later W114s with the four-barrel Solex.

You just need to find the right one. Unfortunately, too many of them were left out to rust, but there are a few good ones left and I've been able to snag them for decent prices, especially compared with some of those 108s. If you get one with a solid body and a good engine, the rest is pretty easy to keep up with mechanically. I took my latest low-cost Benz with fins on a 1600-mile road trip this past summer and it was nothing but a pleasure!

Just got myself w123 1984 240d, paid for the car £2600, by the time its welded, sprayed, interior, and whole car rebuild incl engine i’ll be spending at least another £6k. Labour and parts. Most parts I ordered were of Ebay, some UK sellers some abroad. Now i love this car it has my signature all over it, was it worth me doing it all up? I think absolutely not.. i know for a fact by time its all done this car will last me another 20yrs, but even in 20yrs time if i was to sell it i just don’t think i’ll end up getting my £10k back of it...

Whoever said the W201 wasnt a great car or reliable is wrong. It like all other cars and trucks are dependable as long as you do your maintenance regularly. It becomes a POS when you dont take care of it. Just my opinion.

As the saying goes "There nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes". That is why Maintenance Records are CRUCIAL in buying one. Without them you don't know what you are getting.

it could be, but finding one that doesn;t need a cash injection of $15k-25k is difficult. they are great cars and certainly worth the effort but they are too difficult to find to make this list.

I enjoy your videos, but you really should consider wearing gloves while you work with petro chemicals or at least wash your hands shortly after wrenching.

Oh God, some people... youa can't always use gloves, access, grip, accuracy. I've been working on bikes & cars for years in the same manner, none of this stuff has done anything to my body, if anything, I feel better! A good wash afterwards and you're golden. So concentrate on actively listening to the topic and leave the man in peace.

Pshh don't listen to this kook. Look at classic German engineers and mechanics, even ones that work at the Mercedes factories don't wear gloves.

The 108s and 126s are steadily rising in price. The 124 is a beauty, even my 'little' 230E. Be wary of a cheap Mercedes-Benz on offer, it may quickly become a money pit.

Could have been a good video. Greasy hands and arms are a bit showy. 2/5 photos are way wrong. Choices of vehicles on list is pretty good. Crappy audio. He sounds bored and bothered and like doing this video was an assignment to a high school senior in May.
