Some movies are very much misunderstood, even by people who like and enjoy them...

I do like the original Blade Runner. As a fan of Film Noir I enjoy Deckard's voice over. The fact that Deckard is described by his wife as 'Cold Fish' means that this human lacks the empathy of the genetically engineered humans they are hunting (calling them replcants and androids is just future humanities way of othering them and therefore not dealing with the horror of having a slave race) We are shown that having more life or being given memories would make the replicants even more indistinguishable from humans. And then you look at Voight Kampf, a test that Deckard (as a human) would likely fail and Rachel only fails because Deckard is told she is a replicant so keeps going until she does. Which, IMO, makes the film more interesting than "Deckard is a Replicant"

Im not sure if anyone "misses" the point of Terry Gilliam's Brazil, but I'm always struck by the fact no-one who analyses it seems to mention the banality of evil, which I always thought was the central theme of the movie

Fun fact, the plot described with the tannery polluting the ground water has actually happened near Rockford Michigan. With Wolverine Worldwide and local officials ignoring widespread ground contamination due to decades of careless dumping of its byproducts while making shoes. Many places all over Michigan have similar stories, sadly.

The book Starship Troopers wasn't pro-fascist. Anti-democratic, yes, sure. The state i nthe book had two classes of pleople, one who could do anything but couldn't vote, and the other that could. Rico's family was rich and succesful Filipino(!) family that simply did not see any need to reach for full citizenship. Which could be achieved by many ways, military sevice being only one of the most popular ones, at least in the peacetime. It is said in the book that if a deaf mute asked for full citizenship, the government would had to invent a job for him so that his right to full citizenship is respected. While the military has a lot of power and this state was established by military veterans, most of the tenets of real fascism, like the economic views, the glorification of war and social darwinism isn't there. Also Heinlein'ns heroes in other books were usually anarchosocialists, libertarians and other individualist types who would clash with any collectivist society like fascist, and fascism-like organisations are their enemies. Oh, and those characters would sometimes literally f*ck their mothers.

I don't remember the source of this, so I could easily have fallen for a tale, but I had heard that RoboCop actually started out as a Dredd adaptation. Also, like I've told my kids several times, when an industry is for profit what it produces is profit, regardless of what they tell you they make.

According to Pat Mills in his autobiography, the Karl Urban Dredd is actually closer to John Wagners original Dredd. The humour was more Mills addition.

Ah yes - funny (if, as you acknowledge, inevitable :) ) that you mention Blade Runner. Recently read Oroonoko, by Aphra (presumably no relation) Behn, and thought "Oh - Blade Runner!" Basic storyline of a "Noble" (Which *cough, cough* is to say Westernised) African, and his wife, who pass among the white folk perfectly well and are lauded, till they meet the "wrong" white folk, get enslaved, do some murdery stuff to get free and end up last-standing it in a fairly horrible way (though there, it's actually Oronooko who kills his wife, essentially with her consent, to prevent her falling into the hands of the utter gits). Definitely resonated for me.

Alas, just reminds me of walking out of the cinema after watching Starship Troupers and the many discussions I overheard from other people about great everything depicted in it was.

Does Avatar count? possibly. Blue space stereotypes of native americans do running with 6 legged wolves against mech suit manifest destiny. What the movie is actually about is maybe the solution to humanity depleting earth isn't to take our voracious hunger for resources to other planets, but maybe stay where we already were and fix our shitty attitudes. Edge of Tomorrow? Starts of as dumb action movie, turns into one of the best "fucks with the audience" plot twists about our perception of the movie and the time loops and all we're not seeing, as well as slowly going mad alongside tom cruise.

When you meet someone claiming they didn't like or didn't get Bladerunner (talking about the actually good 1982 one, of course), don't waste your time on such individual. You literally need no other reason to scratch them off your contacts list. Forever. You can thank me later.

'Wings of Desire' isn't about angels and their wings (see 'It's A Wonderful Life'). Nor is it really about Berlin (although that is Wim Wenders' reasoning, and it is his film, so what do I know?) For what little it's worth, my reading is that it's about the pain of the human condition; that we all carry noise and trouble and challenge all the time. Occasionally, we are at peace - especially when reading something of importance to us - but most of the time we try to escape the noise by doing other stuff, like making movies. It does have a rather meta thread through it. Ultimately, the true sense of peace in ourselves, with others, with society... The Beatles were right: All You Need is Love. THAT'S what the film is about. (PS - there is no meaning in the fact that Paul McCartney links the Fab Four with Wings)

There are numerous hints and clues in Starship Troopers (the film) that the Bugs did in fact, not start the war. In the book, they most certainly did, but in the film the human government needed a reason to go to war!

As Verhoeven films go, Robocop is way more successful in achieving its objectives than Starship Troopers, which was way too subtle/confusing in its subtext. Most viewers understood that Robocop was set in the worst possible version of the United States, and was a critique of American capitalism as well as an action movie. By contrast, most viewers of Starship Troopers just saw soldiers and insects slaughtering each other, while many critics were actually incensed by what they saw as an endorsement of fascism. When that many people don’t get what you were going for, then my reaction is: Nice try, but it was a failure as satire.
@Yawbus1976
@Yawbus1976 5 ай бұрын
It also fails as satire because it relies on a first week history students version of fascism, which largely amounts to "The uniforms are WW2 bad guy adjacent designs, so they MUST be fascist". Then the second week history student pipes up about them all being aryans, which works until they bring in the new Sky Marshall, a black woman. Simple fact is, Verhoeven never knew enough about the novel or actual fascism to create a decent satire of either.

I don't like to watch movies subjectively. I watch them objectively because when things are meant to be taken subjectively, everyone will have a different opinion of what they just saw. If I want to think deeper about a subject, I'll read about it. If I want a quick, stupid entertainment, I watch a movie. Subjective movies suck, see 2001 a space odyssey. Stupid stupid movie.

You should look up the word irony. You clearly have no idea what the book Starship Troopers is about, while making a video about things that are not about what you thought they were about. Also, if the film was about how a fascist society would make a film about itself, then why would they present such a horrific depiction of the war with the bugs and allow the film to question the justification for the fascist society? What fascist society do you know of, which would allow propaganda showing it's soldiers being slaughtered in their masses, a school teacher talking about the freedom to choose and it's leaders stepping down in failure? I think you're way out of your lane when trying to discuss this particular film/book/subject.

The Truman Show. It's not a satire on reality TV - it came out before Big Brother. It's about a man trying to find meaning in the world, realising the answer's in the death and resurrection of his altered-appearance father figure, and struggling to convince those around him of an unlikely Truth. Sound familiar?
