My fondest memory of this era was renting Super Mario All Stars and Final Fight 2 from Blockbuster while simultaneously taping a Ren & Stimpy marathon.

Like being left with the LJN titles 😄 Although I gotta say the LJN Wrestling titles weren't terrible surprisingly.

@@anthonydenn4345 Agreed, the LJN WWF games didn't suck but at the same time they definitely haven't aged well either. They were good games for their time but have clearly been outdone by other wrestling games during the course of time.

But nothing was better than going in and actually finding one for rent. I think an alien abduction was more likely than going to the rental outlet and finding a game you actually wanted to play.

Great video. I worked at Blockbuster during this era, and Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II absolutely dominated the market. I’d estimate that 90% of our SNES and Sega rentals were just those two titles. I’d love to see the numbers behind those GamePro charts.

I think the last game we rented from Blockbuster was in early 1993 (Jan/Feb), and that was Joe & Mac. After that, we rented from the local video store - Hit List - or Pharmhouse. We did rent two games from this list: Super Mario All-Stars, and the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat.

I worked at Blockbuster in the 90s. I bought their entire anime section (vhs) for 25¢ a piece (Discontinued price + employee discount) when they did their annual inventory/audit/purge one year. I still have them all in a storage bin, probably worth a decent bit today?

I remember either the Bigfoot or the Little Caesars equivalent. I was upset the first time I saw it because it was at my cousins house. She had left it on her stovetop overnight because she didn’t have space in her fridge and didn’t put any effort in to save the leftovers. I wasn’t allowed to have any slices because they could have made me sick.

Wow, I'd forgotten that Rock n' Roll Racing existed! I played Mortal Kombat (it seemed to be everywhere in '93) and I owned All Stars (although that was probably mid-90s; the result of a trade with a friend). Alien vs Predator is one I remember seeing in magazines but never came across in the wild, and World Heroes brought back vague memories, although I don't think I ever played it myself. This is another great piece of nostalgia, the early 1990s was a really great time for me!

I'll never forget renting Rock n' Roll Racing. A buddy and I were playing in the living room when my Dad walked by as Paranoid was playing. The chiptune version must have caught his ear, so he stuck around to give it a listen. "Hey, I know these guys." "Really?!" "Yeah, one of my bands opened for them back when they came to town." "Pffft. Yeah right, Dad." But sure enough, he came back a half hour later with an old newspaper from the 70s. Turns out Black Sabbath were late to getting to the venue so my Dad's recently formed band had little choice but to improvise a half-hour polka-infused Age of Aquarius. As the two bands sat backstage as the drums were being nailed in place, Ozzy broke the silence with "You kids are alright."

Great video Erin. I ended up buying Rock n Roll Racing. I still have that copy of the game and play it regularly. I do have to turn the announcer off and most of the time turn the music off eventually because you just hear them too much if you go through the whole game. If you don't know it has a bonus stage if you get through all of the other parts on warrior difficulty too. The bonus stage is a very metal looking lava world.

😄Very nice explanation, Erin. Here my memories: -I had no idea how Mortal Kombat was heavily censored on the SNES and only saw that version , it was my FIRST experience with Mortal Kombat universe. -I grew up with Super Mario Bros 1 and 3 on NES, i never saw SMB 2 until Super Mario All-Stars on mid 90s along with the unreleased difficult SMB2 from Japan.

Hey, Super Turrican music is always okay by me; as far as I'm concerned, Chris Hulsbeck is the only composer I'd allow to get their hands on sleigh bells. My memories of the '90s are a little spotty, so I don't know what I was renting in 1993 specifically (and we didn't have a Blockbuster anywhere nearby; we had West Coast Video, and even that was pretty far), but I do remember being pretty infatuated with Smartball and Super Valis 4 during the '90s, so I rented them quite a lot. That said, I did own Super Mario All-Stars (good investment) and Mortal Kombat (bad investment), and probably picked them up around this time.

I was dying for a 16-bit console really early and I remember renting a TG-16 system with Bonk and Splatterhouse and on a different weekend renting a Genesis console with Forgotten Worlds and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. I probably would have been pretty close to buying a console if I had just not rented them and not played any arcade games. By this time I had a SNES and Genesis at home but didn't get my own TG-16 until it was a dead system a few years later for practically nothing at a garage sale. There were so many great games in 92 and 93 that I'd read every game magazine and still be surprised at the rental store that they'd have new titles I had never heard of.

The bigfoot pizza was THE BEST ever pizza any chain pizza restaurant had. Pizza hut could rescue itself just over bringing that back and doing it EXACTLY the way they used to. Man that was some tasty pizza. Now they use mostly fake and subpar ingredients. Their pizza doesn't taste any better now than the cardboard box it comes in.

Also, I'd seen Predator but not Alien at that point, so I didn't quite understand what was going on, but as a diehard beat 'em up fan I didn't really care.
