I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Spyderco is pound for pound the best knife company period. There are cooler knives, there are more fidgety knives, there are smoother and higher tolerance knives, but Spyderco just does everything extremely well. Hands down the best and most consistent with heat treat and blade geometry which makes them as a tool absolutely top notch. As you said that and a variety of steels not to mention a variety of models and sub models with the salt, lightweight, normal, and exclusive editions they come out with. The Native 5 does envelope everything that makes Spyderco great all while having a back lock. They aren’t fidget monsters but they are certainly work horses with awesome ergos and perfect blade shape. I agree with you 100 percent across the board.

I sold mine a couple years ago with a few others for some more knife cash…and your mentions/videos are reminding me how much I miss it. I was still somewhat new to the knife game and kind of scoffed at back locks. Wanted the axis locks, button locks…all the “fancy” stuff. Now I’ve come full circle and respect the durability and function of said back locks. Spyderco has been my favorite company throughout, and the Native 5 is a choice edc. Perfect size, weight, dope design, killer blade.. I don’t just want one back, I want multiple. Thanks for the videos and the insight.

I don’t have a Native 5 yet but you did make a great case to get one. Maybe I can get one in Magnacut. I do have a delica in k390 and I know that satisfying lock up you were talking about with the Native 5. Great video.

I agree that the native 5lw is one of the best smaller edc knives. I have 2 of them that have been reground. Also they do have side to side play if you disengage the back lock and check, but when its locked up it's solid.

Spyderco makes awesome knifes. I’m petty proud of my para 3 and fallen in love with the para 2 in cruwear, both extremely beautiful and useful especially the para 2 holds the edge very well and easy to sharpen.

Just got my first spiderco 2 weeks ago. The ambitious. Its the first time iv spent more then like 10 bucks on a pocket knife and since i already ordered another. The lil native in s30v. They really are nice knives. And i love the way they look with the g10 grips. now i want a native 5!

Man your making me wanna get another LW version. Had a PJ before in S35vn but sold it bc it was just too ho hum in that configuration. I do have a native 5 still in S110V and G10 with full liners. Its a little tank very well made but it hardly gets carried bc I generally like something a little bigger but its definitely a solid model that’s popular for good reason. I’ve always preferred the Sage series like the 2 and 5 for smaller Spyercos but they only come in a handful of configurations with most in s30v, not that there’s anything wrong with that steel. I do like how the native carries its very compact and no hump when closed like most leaf shapes blades they offer. My only real gripe with the LW was the clip position leaving a little too much handle poking out the pocket and the non standard screw mounting pattern making the owner buy a native specific aftermarket clip to address that. Now a few years later or so there are more options out in the LW new steels and handle colors, in fact i was eyeing that new MC salt you mentioned just this morning haha.

It's also worth noting it comes in magancut, which I and many others consider the best stainless steel.

I carry the Magnacut version often. In particular, when running, working out, etc., and it’s a great lightweight option for this. I’m thinking of adding another and getting the titanium scales. It’s just so good as an EDC knife. Thanks for the video.

Applied Weapons Tech has made aluminum scales for the native 5. I’ve got a couple sets coming and if they’re anything like the rest of their work, I’m sure it’ll be a home run

The Spyderco I have most used were budget ones, made abroad - the Resilience and the Persistence, and I used them daily. I later on bought a Chaparral because I wanted a very thin blade, and it delivered. The thing was that the Chaparral's handle was just too small for my hand. My point is this: you can buy a great knife but you also need to consider how it's going to work for you with day after day use.

When GP knives had the satin or DLC rex45 native 5 lw for 112 bucks... that was the deal of the year in a high performance bad ass!

The native truly is incredible, I held off buying one for ages cause it’s a backlock and people always say you can’t (or they’re not good) flick them. What I found tho is if you disassemble them and lubricate them from inside with a good lubricant they become easy enough to flick (if you have the technique for flicking backlocks down). Also the backlock on the native is the best I’ve ever used. It locks up 100% solid yet drops to your finger ridiculously smoothly ,so smoothly in fact that I thought at first it had to be loose! But nope, rock solid. I can even disengage it with my index finger and the blade will drop completely closed. I also agree on the FRN, I have no desire to replace the scales on my maxamet native which is extremely unusual for me with FRN knives, even my delicas I replace the scales on. The only thing I don’t leave stock on the FRN natives is the clip, the MXG deep carry native (FRN) clip is a must for me to actually carry it. I liked the FRN native so much I very quickly ordered a g10 one and a pair of anodised fluted titanium scales from RGT which have almost arrived and are gonna look so damn good! Edit: just heard the comment about Spyderco’s detents and while I largely agree (I’ve had a couple US models with annoying levels of detent play) you obviously haven’t owned one of the Taichung flippers (excl the smock) which are notorious for having terribly, terribly weak detents! I have a mantra 3 and the stock detent on that was insanely bad, flopped out a quarter of the way on the flip bahahaha. I used a Dremel to widen the detent hole along with a couple other fixes and now it’s one of my favourite knives but just thought it’s worth mentioning

My first single blade folding knife with a lock was a Spyderco endura. Since then I have consistently bought spyderco knives. Every single one I have owned has been a joy to use. The native is the next spyderco on my list. I’ve only owned their Japanese backlocks. I’m interested to see what a us spyderco backlock is like.

As a guy with large hands (not being that guy, just saying) this is my favorite Spyderco frn model and incredibly comfortable, I never thought it would be just looking at it but once I was able to try one I was hooked!

Between the shaman and native 5, pm 2 and para 3, manix 2 and sage 5. Which would you say is the best bigger work knife, smaller edc knife combo. I like the Manix but just curious. They all seem to fit this formula of a bigger knife that's generally better and a smaller and more lightweight knife that's still amazing.

I've had phases where I preferred other knives. In the grand scheme of my last 15 years of knife collecting though, I always come back to the delica for a small edc. I've got 3 of them, one in Super Blue steel, a wharncliffe k390, and a standard vg10. I go to the vg10 the most honestly. The superblue is a bit of a collector item at this point and isn't as tough down at the edge as vg10 in my uses. The wharncliffe is nice but I've found a regular drop point works just as well for utility and has the belly for other tasks. Wish I would have gotten the regular blade shape in k390 instead, maybe I'll see if anyone wants to trade at some point. Idk yet. The native is on my list and possibly the next knife I buy. It's got the classic leaf shape blade, spyderco does a wonderful job with the back lock, and I like their frn handles. I may go with the magnacut salt version to knock 2 birds with one stone. I wanna see for myself what all the talk is about over magnacut, and I want to get a native. If I end up liking the knife but not the steel then I can always get an s30v native. Then sell or store the native salt in my collection.

I have three, gave a lightweight to my son. Only knives I carry, the best has full liners and burple G10 with S110V, the second best is a linerless with micarta handles in Rex 45. The third had G10 linerless but the blade is more or less useless CruWear. The lock is the only one any folding knife should have. Strongest in testing and broke the blade not the lock. Would love a Maxamet and a Magna cut, but they are lightweights which are a no go for me.

Dude, it took me years to finally get a Spyderco, and after 3 weeks of carrying one daily... I FINALLY get it. They're just workhorses, plain and simple. I literally could not ask for a better knife to do absolutely everything I need to do on a daily basis.

Shaman is the GOAT work knife for me. The Native 5 LW offers all of the same hard working functionality in a LW EDC package. It is so good. I really like the lock back and find really figdety. I have the Magnacut version, it was packed with grease. I cleaned out the grease and polished the surface at the pivot point and I had my knife reverse flicking on day 2. Same theory as when I polish washers.

The Native 5 is the most complete package knife in my working knives collection. i have 3.

5 reasons I think the title of the best Spyderco for EDC goes to the Manix 2 regular or lightweight. 1. The perfect size. The Native 5 is just a little to small. 2. The best lock. It is strong and very figitable plus it can be tuned to your liking with aftermarket parts 3. Very comfortable handle and choil. Same texture as the Native 5 for a great grip even when the hands are cold or wet. 4. Lots of steel choices. 5. Continuously curved leaf shaped blade that has a lowered tip. The Vosteed Nightshade does the same thing but is even more exaggerated.

Native 5 is the perfect pocket knife. I have the ultralight in 110V. Small, ergonomic, you don't even know it's with you. Agree the FRN feels solid. I have many fixed blades for hard work.

In my work I have to use the butt of the knife handle several times a day. My expensive plastic handled bugout and 2 spydercos have to stay home.

It's a mini, lock-back Shaman. They're great knives but I carry my SHaman over my Native5 most days.

Did they did a higher hardness on the green batch? I have the LC200N yellow one, honestly it has to be around 56-58, it's bad so I dislike the knife. Also, it's too small for my hands to not use the choke up, I like a little more length, especially for cutting food and other messy stuff I don't want on my fingers or in my knife. I may go for the k390 stretch 2 next. There are so many good knives out there, but spydies are their own thing, no other knife melts in the hand like that, and that frn grip is superior to everything imho. And the Steels available of course. K390, I mean... Unseen anywhere else, right.

I have to agree on the blade shape. I love this type of leaf blade shape - not aesthetically, but functionally I love it. Wharnies are too straight for general applications, especially if the blade to handle isn't angled slightly. Wharnies are too hyped in the knife community right now. Unless you are solely cutting boxes open, a slight belly is much more useful in a wide range of applications

My lc200n has an black standard clip. Yours is not? And yes the native 5 is amazing. I carry it the most for edc. And no worries on the beach where I live.

If they made a choiless version I’d be down but the cutting edge is too small for the overall size. At that point I’d rather rock a dragonfly or mini native.

Spyderco has some issue with some knifes (weak detent on some models, uneven bevels, poor quality of some italian models) but that's not a big problem. Other than that - I'm the happy owner of more than 40+ spydercos;
