The grain structure at 1:10 ... to say it wasn't heat treated right is a massive understatement.

I wouldn't trust any steel / the production quality of anything coming out of indonesia unless for a wall hanger 😬

More than fair critique. Sword critics online are in general very forgiving, when they have to point out it's a bad sword, it's usually devoid of any redeeming quality. It's good of you to do this list.

You have the coolest channel because Thasuki sends you a $3K sword to keep, and yet you're still free to call it an overpriced pos

I am free to call it a POS but I don't think it is. Just a bit disappointing. The issues it has would be disappointing in any price point.

Also, did you know that you can buy jeans for motorcycling that are lined with kevlar and include armor for the knees etc. Might be worth looking into.

There's actually a guy who supposedly destructively tests out all of the scorpion swords, (Jason something) which are all just basically different shaped machetes of some kind, but because he has stake in that company of course, his reviews are going to be nothing but biased. Great video as always Matt 👍🏽

Jason Woodard is also is in a professional partnership with the owner of Scorpion Swords. There has been quite a bit of conjecture on how "fixed" the results of those test videos actually are, especially when compared to the results of independent testing performed by others.

@@zenhydra Not knocking on 1095 at all (which is what Scorpion says every one of their blades are made of) but it would take something the equivalent of S5 to take *that* amount of damage, on steel and other equally ridiculous test mediums to take such small amounts of damage!

You comments about Viking swords handles, in particular the pommel, and I share your opinion. Some historical Viking swords (ulfbehr.. probably spelled wrong) are quite spectacular, but I simply do not understand a pommel design the ears into you hand like that. I continue to study but wondered if you or anyone knows why they chose this design??

I never held one myself, but I've seen many videos from Roland Warzecha and he has an interesting point of view about the technique. This might be of interest to you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eN6hf8qDvduynIk.htmlsi=CEEVD2d3vGY-pU3m

Hello Matthew, are you going to review the darksword armoury messer pictured in the “5 surprisingly good” swords review? It is my first sword, but I have to say I’m a bit disappointed in it for 1 reason, it’s a bit hefty for its length, not very nimble. I was actually thinking of getting the Dragon King Sea Wave wakizashi, and you praised the katana version 😄

Realativily new here. Love the content. Are there any swords that have survived The Croquet Stick of Doom? Playlist?

None have really survived.. The was one sword that had a handle that exploded and I could not swing it anymore.. They all meat their doom at the stake.

From what I recall, the best to date has been the Cloudhammer S5 steel katana. None survive the Croquet Stick of Doom, though that piece went the distance and then some.

I personally would like to also call out scorpion swords because I bought one ,, it was like 350$ and easily chumped by a budget machete for capability. It is painfully clear that scorpion swords is not in the business of making good swords, and is instead in the business of scamming newbies in sword collecting. The sheer level of disrespect they obviously have for potential buyers is far beyond some "tradespersons ego" and fully in the arena of scam. It's not that it's not ok to make what they do and sell it, it's just that there is no question that they know it is not worth what they sell it for, and belongs in the sub 60$ pages of budk at best. (forged warrior is equal quality , but can be had at 40$ - 60$) ... and for the record I personally think budk and all of their products are excellent, because although they are not high quality swords and knives, they are priced appropriately and at the price they sell for give the user the same experience as scorpion swords. Well,, it's a good thing because you can destroy it and experience those materials and learn from them, but it's also a good thing because in the very worst case cost that budk has to offer, you tossed 300$ for a katana that costs 300$ everywhere and never costs less. But if you buy a forged warrior sword from budk, you spent 40-60$ on what scorpion sells for 350$

I actually like the look of three of these, but yeah, quality of construction is an issue..
@zenhydra

Scorpion Swords are just about the worst offenders when it come to minimalistic efforts at making sword-like objects. They are plasma/waterjet cut from cheap plate steel, they have the absolute minimum of grinding necessary to hint at a swordlike shape, their hilts are ugly and unsophisticated slab construction, and they clearly don't receive the heat treat that they are claimed to undergo. In the end you are paying hundreds of dollars for something any high schooler in a metal shop class could churn out, and that is just nuts.

I bet the dragon king you recived for review for a 1/3rd of the price of the thaisuki is far a better sword🧐, it would be fine for say $500-ish, but in my opinion 3K USD from a thai company is just extremely overpriced given the conversion rates etc

Oh Jesus. I could make a better sword than that first one... actually I have. I made a messer out of a machete blade. It's imperfect, a little rough, and does use a little bit of JB Weld to fill in some gaps, but it isn't just going to break. In fact you could still use it as a machete to some extent and not break.

4:40 Like most "viking" swords that grip is too long. The Scholar Gladitoria and Roland Warzecha channels have some good videos on gripping these swords. First one needs a sword that actually has an appropriately sized and shaped hilt to practice these things. I think the Albion squire line viking sword would the best economical offering.

I wonder how the grip is too long when it looks like his hand barely fits it?

@@MrBeefy-og7nwLook again. It looks like he has almost an inch of wiggle room, and that's with his large hands. All those dark ages swords have very short grips. That's not because they had small hands. These weapons were designed in certain ways to be used in certain ways.
@MrBeefy-og7nw
@MrBeefy-og7nw 8 ай бұрын
@@Trav_Can Fair enough. That being said do you know how they would use them without the pommel biting into one's palm? I've changed my grip slightly while swing it to achieve this but it feels less secure in the hand and my wrist feels a bit odd.

@@MrBeefy-og7nw Check out both of those channels and search for grip. You'll find them, and they will explain far better than I can. Those swords seemed to have been used with a specific technique. Second nature for them, but strange to us modern folks. Perhaps at times they were locked into the hand and they were swung with only the shoulder and elbow (not the wrist). Like an Indian tulwar. But I think more likely the grip was more just for the fingers. While the heel of palm was alongside the pommel. Allowing you to "throw" out the sword as you swing. Ensuring correct edge alignment. No one knows for sure, but they made them that way for some reason. Our job is to figure out why, not change things to make it better for what we think is right.

that windlass viking sword has a wrong handle shape and size plus you're holding it wrong, that's probably why you're not enjoying the experience. It's simply not a proper viking sword.
