Five Three Five refers to the “suits”. 1-5 (5), 7-9 (3), 11-15 (5).

The different "suits" are useful because they serve as a visual reminder of which block of numbers a card is in. For example, a card in the "sunny suit" can never be in a run with one in the "cloudy suit" because of the number gaps in the deck (no 6's/no 10's). Those number gaps are actually pretty central to the game, and the game--from its title to its art--works really hard to remind the players of them, but I'm not sure Tom noticed given his criticisms.

I love Five Three Five so much. It is snappy and light, with some great decisions. Even when it seems too easy because you can play off of most melds, you need to be clever if you want to ensure you don't get stuck with one or two cards for the rest of the game. Great game. I highly suggest people give it a try.

Not that I know a lot of card shedding games, but this sounds like it has a lot of the elements of Big 2 which is played with standard playing cards. That one is more strategic by the sound of it because there isn't a wipeout 8 card and you don't have the twist of smaller runs being worth more. Proof is in the playing though.

I thought the opposite, Scout but smoother. Even Tom calls this game “too basic”. Definitely picking this up as Scout seems to play itself and the only decision to make is what orientation you take your hand in.
