Five tips for your Atari 400 Mini

Since the Atari 400 mini came out, people have discovered some tricks that improve the use of the 400 mini. I have created a list of a number of these, which resulted in these five tips!

Hi and thanks for your video! For non-working cartridges, open them in Altirra and set the correct rom type, then save a new version, this one should run! Another tip I haven't seen mentioning is that you can enable artifacting in the CFG file on a per-game basis. Setting the artifacting value to "1" will fix the colours in games like Lode Runner and Panther. You can also force PAL (or NTSC) this way, a bit like on THEC64.

Hi. Thanks for the tips. I loaded the two ROMs that didn't worked into Altirra and then saved them as a bin, but that made no difference. I also played around with the settings in the cfg file, but that didn't help either. But I keep trying!

The lack of that small bump on the joystick is inexplicable. It's standard for all d-pad designs since the NES. How did this get out the door? And I'm also waiting word on proper analog controls, including paddle, trackball and 5200 controls. Heck, Atari is selling new paddle controllers. Those ought to be used on this device. Has anyone tried a vintage controller with a USB-9pin adapter? That would be one of the first things I'd try, because, like any true Atarian, I would want to swap out the stock joystick for a Wico as quickly as possible. Thanks for this video, it has been very helpful.

I haven't tried a USB-9pin adapter yet, because I don't have one yet. I do plan to build one myself. And then I will definitely try that with the 400 mini.

Where on earth do you source the Atari Classic Joystick in Europe (UK to be precise)?

The Classic controller was included in the VCS bundle that I purchased in the VCS. Unfortunately, they are indeed not for sale in Europe. I bought it through an intermediary company. I have explained the process in a video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqifZaiUtNm5n3k.html

This was a great review. Seems like a lot of work to get this to work properly. I am not tech savvy and wish I had that talent. As much as I wanted to I won't be buying this with all the problems this has. I'm glad you are happy with it.

You don't really have to be tech savvy to enjoy the 400 mini. Those tips are more about squeezing even more out of the 400 mini. You can also have a good time just playing the built-in games. And then it really is plug and play.

I have games on the flash drive & I saved a game to save slot 1 but how do I load it? All I can do is save.

Ok. Good thing you already found it. Loading save games is done in the same way as saving. The function of the fire button changes from save to load.

Inderdaad. Iedere controller met een analoge stick kan daar gebruikt voor worden. Leuk om te zien trouwens dat mijn kanaal ook door Nederlanders bekeken wordt.

if u ask me , atari 400 mini sucks just like the big brother also. once u have an atari 2600 i dont see any need to have the atari 400. the best games are all on atari 2600.

Thank you for your opinion. However, I have a different opinion. I grew up with the Atari 2600. I enjoyed the games that came out for it. Later I bought an Atari 800XL. I also enjoyed the games for that machine, which most of the times looked a bit beter and offered more extensive game play. I think both had good games and it largely depends on what you grew up with, what determines how you view them right now.

@@gespy lol actually i am born in 1970 so i grew up with all the video games systems almost including the atari 2600. i still dont have any interest on the mini atari 400. maybe the graphics can be slightly better but its not a big deal really. i had an atari 800 xl and did not like it much. the games were not that good and this computer was not impressive to me. i was more into commodore 64 and amiga computers when i was a teenager. it was so much better... i own the atari gamestation and an original atari 2600 already and have tons of games for it. i checked that mini atari 400 and decided this is not for me. like you say , we can have different opinion. personally i dont see why i would spend to have the same games even if they have a minor upgrade. i checked a bit the atari 400 games and its not impressive to me really. i think most good games are on atari 2600 like i said. i personally prefer have the original system anyway.
