I've found my glass pen useful for this. Also, painting knives can be quite handy. Mine resists ink quite well so can be cleaned off quite easily.

I use the automatic pen and also the Kakimori dip pen. Mostly. Sometimes a small paint brush to get more depth.

I’ve been swatching my inks on the small notepad paper from Galen Leather. It’s about 3 1/2”x 2 1/8”. Tomoe River paper. I get 2 to 3 ink swatches onto each sheet. Some take a really long time to dry on that paper, but it shows the shading, sheen, and shimmer the best of any paper I’ve used so far. It really lives up to its reputation. Another thing I have been checking out is how different inks look with UV light. Some swatches will have fluorescent shading showing, and some ghost through the back with a fluorescent glow. Normal light on those looks like nothing on the back. Sailor black ink and Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz are two that surprised me with that.

I think one way could be using pipette to drop a drop of paint. Of course, it's harder to control and easier to make a mess. But every "swab" would be unique.

Thanks for this! I need to learn more ways to swab ink. One thing I’ve always done was use a knife (guess who I learned that from), and just spread ink on the page. 🤣

Over the last weekend I made a slew of Col-o-ring swatches by dipping the end of a glass eyedropper into the ink, like you do here, and then sliding the the drips across the card with the outside of the glass eyedropper tube. I managed not to scratch up the wet paper, and get a not-too-saturated swatch. I have the folded nibs but my holder does not cooperate. Hmmm I need to know more about the differences in dip pen nib holders. If you’ve already made a video about that please let me know!

Hi, nice video and useful tips! I also use a letter opener (also resusable :)) and it makes beautiful swaps. Other people use paint knifes but I do prefer the letter opener, plus I already had one so ... no need to buy something new :)
