Regarding the Coliseum, something similar happened with the pyramids of Giza. They used to be covered in a smooth white limestone layer topper by a golden capstone, making them gleam in the sun. But the limestone was removed for other construction projects after the Egyptian dynasties finally fell, leaving them in their present state.

I know that the focus of FPV is sports, but he could do a video more or less in this subject, regarding great constructions of the past/archelogical treasures that were target of theft by other countries or by other individuals that sold the stuff to institutions or collectors. There has been a movement by some of this countries to recover the parts. Like: Greece is trying to recover parts of the Pathernon (I think) from England. My homecountry of Brazil just recovered 400+ fossils from France

Another track worth mentioning: The bobsleigh and luge track in Sarajevo. It was built for the 1984 Winter Olympics and held, of course, bobsleigh and luge events at the games. While it did see use in the immediate few years after the games the Yugoslav Wars put a halt to it especially since Sarajevo was devastated from the war. The track itself was even used as an artillery position. It has since been abandoned, though there have been discussions with regards to renovating/rebuilding it.

I’m so glad/sad you included Fair Grounds Field in Shreveport. I attended many Captains games growing up in the ‘90s. It was fun because it was geared toward family fun while there were future MLB stars like Rich Aurilia, John Burkett, and Joe Nathan on that field. Unfortunately, it’s a mirror of Shreveport’s traumatic fall from grace and a reminder of what it could have been in music and sporting entertainment due to political corruption and bad backroom deals.

My hometown had two abandoned soccer stadiums. This is a "complicated" thing to explain here in Brazil, because the clubs from the majority of the major towns have their own, in general smaller stadiums, but every major city have a bigger stadium. Like "one coliseum every town". In a U.S adapted reality would be colleges having their own, smaller stadiums but hosting big schools on NFL stadiums, if the later were owned by the city or state and did not possess any element allusive to the club, like colors or chairs with the wordmark or symbol on it. Estádio Antônio Accioly is the home of the club my grandpa (and almost every grandpa in town) supports (Atlético), and was left in desrepair in the late 90's, early 2000's. The club was completely broken, in the second division of the state league (we have state leagues and the national league), without a title for 15 years and almost sold the area for a company to build a mall (the stadium is located in a major business area, to which the club and it's fanbase is much attached to). They renovated it on a campaign in 2005, won the 2nd division of the state league, came back to the first in 2006 being runner up in the championship. Ever since they did enough to earn a spot in the first division of the national league, the stadium, once small and cramped (like 3-4 thousand capacity), was expanded to a capacity of 12k and even hosted it's first international game in this current season. Estádio Olímpico was once the town's major venue. Right on city center of the state capital regarded as the heart of our country, on one of the most recognized intersections we have in town, was built pretty much along with it in the late 1930's, early 40's. Received many historical games with all the clubs of the city, even the most historical and folklorical state league final we ever had (IMO) between the two major fanbases in our state (Goiás and Vila Nova), a game that took, among power outages, fights and a penalty shoot-out well over 5 hours - a regular soccer game lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes counting halftime - according to the people that witnessed it. It's glory days ended when the Serra Dourada, a true concrete monster, was opened in 1975, and it was a true wonder of it's day. The olimpico received some minor games from there until 2007, when it was closed and demolished for the state to build a center of sports excellence that included a new stadium, a work that took 10+ years to be completed due to major corruption problems and a gangster state governor that was elected 4 times and is trying for a 5th non consecutive term. Since the rebuilding it hosted the state league final again once and hosted Atlético in part of their title winning season in the 2nd national division, with some games hosted before the rona when we had scheduling conflicts in other stadia in town

Looking at the Rubber Bowl, I'm not entirely sold on the idea that they couldn't drive sheet piles in between the edge of the stadium and the boulevard to prop it up long enough to allow for the demolition of the stadium and the subsequent construction of an embankment to stabilize the road afterward. I'm sure someone who actually finished their engineering degree will come along and explain why that won't work, though.

I wondering why not just fill the whole thing in with dirt and gravel
@BeastOfMetal1989
@BeastOfMetal1989 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmillefanti6319 That could be prohibitively expensive. There may also be a certain standard the material may have to meet to be used as fill, and depending on that standard it would have to be sloped a certain way to fill in the stadium. And there could also be issues that arise from how the buried portions of the stadium shift as they rot underground. Not ideal when it's butted up against a road.

I think they've finally started tearing down Intimidators Stadium here in Kannapolis. The new downtown ballpark they moved to (Atrium Health Ballpark) is really nice, probably one of the best new parks in single-A minor league. They also changed the team name from the Intimidators (which was named after Dale Earnhardt, who had a financial stake in the team that passed on to his wife Teresa when he died); when someone else bought the team she kept the rights to the name, so now they're the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers. The "Cannon" refers to the Cannon family that first built the town as an employee town for their textile mill here in 1908.

Yes. The Sod Poodles). ANY-way, the stadium hasn't been in use since 2016, and it just sits there, falling to pieces.

Drove by Fair Grounds Field on a cross country trip. Thanks for the background infromation, as I thought it looked very neglected at this point, sitting in the middle of a currently used facility.

I live here and it's crazy how bad this place is. And it's right next to the arena where our local hockey team plays.

WHOA...props to you dude for adding Capital City Stadium. I was hoping you'd mention it. I drive by it every day thinking..."what a waste". They could renovate it and have high school or amateur baseball there, concerts etc. You forgot to mention Hank Aaron played here as a Jacksonville Brave back in the 50's. He threw out the first pitch in 2013. The trouble with this area, is that it's prone to flooding, so I can't see any retail space going there. Just hope Columbia does something with it soon!

Would love to see you do one in conjunction with a racing channel in regards to old tracks. Jax Raceways is a track I used to go to as a kid but it stopped being used in 2004. The land was going to be used for other things but like a lot of old dirt tracks it is so contaminated with oil and fuel that it is deemed unusable.

Was hoping it may have made the list, but there’s an abandoned stadium close to home for me! Fielders Stadium in Zion, IL was an 8,000 seat baseball field that hosted the Lake County Fielders for a grand total of 2 seasons. There were two failed attempts to put permanent concourse and proper facilities in, and the project was scrapped as were the Fielders. Now it just sits there.

Across from the Austin airport is the old Del Valle High School stadium which was used for the "Friday Night Lights" TV series, which put in new lights and turf. Next door, the old baseball field was turned into the East Dillon stadium for the final season of the show. Now nature is reclaiming the facility.

fun fact: Kannapolis Intimidators was once owned by Nascar Hall-of-Famer Dale Earnhardt Sr (who's son Dale jr. joined the Nascar Hall-Of-Fame 13 years later). I guess that's why the Earnhardt Family were running the Baseball Franchise and Stadium during Dale Sr.'s Nascar career at that time, btw.

I graduated from University of Akron in 2010 and went to like one or 2 games in the Rubber Bowl and freaking hated every minute of it. Also, didn’t help that our football team was trash after winning the conference the season before I enrolled lol

Back in the 90s when I was in high school my buddy and I went to a Spurs game at the Alamodome. They dont use the whole stadium for basketball unless it's the Final Four. For Spurs games they would just use 1/4 of the stadium floor and move some seats in to fill it out. We snuck past the security guards and got into the unused parts of the stadium. We could still hear the game echoing through the halls, but it was eerie being there in the dark. We went all the way up to the top row in the corner of the stadium and watched the game from there. We snuck back into the crowd and left after the game.

The baseball stadium in Shreveport, LA I went there for a Shreveport Captains game with my grandparents in the late 80's. It was a pretty decent stadium for back then.

If you do another one of these, you just have to mention Lake Olmstead Stadium, the old home of the Augusta Greenjackets. They left after 2017 (I believe) and moved to North Augusta leaving behind a sad, decaying stadium. They tried to turn it into a concert venue and we’re halfway through completion only to find out that the ground was too soft and unstable to hold the buildings/stages/seating that had put up. The issue is that they can’t take it apart because the ground can’t support the heavy machinery needed to demolish it. Gotta love good ol’ disgusta.

My family and I went to see a lot of games at Intimidators Stadium in Kannapolis. That's sad letting a nice stadium turn into that. They dropped the Intimidator name which came from Dale Earnhardt who was a part owner before his death and are now the Kannapolis Cannon-Ballers and have a stadium in downtown Kannapolis NC.

Intimidators Stadium was so poorly and oddly designed. All of the suites, bathrooms, and press box were on the first base side. There was no awning at all, meaning there was no way to escape the heat and thunderstorms. The old ballpark is slated to be rezoned as an industrial site. The new park in downtown Kannapolis is a gem.

I was apart of an amateur football team that tried to use the Rubber Bowl as a field back in the mid 2010s. One of our coaches knew one of the investors. They didn’t protect the stadium and it got looted pretty heavily during that time frame from its death until now. Funny and sad to say the least. It was very cool when it was at its peak. Hilariously like 15-20 minutes from the University for some dumb reason.

You should put the football stadium at Morris Brown College in Atlanta. They filmed ' We Are Marshall ' there in 2006 and hosted field hockey at the 1996 Olympics. Beautiful stadium that now looks like it was built to film The Walking Dead.

If they can get the name Intimidator back to an abandon ballpark, then I guess Teresa Earnhardt aka The Wicked Witch of the South can't keep everything she sues to keep the Earnhardt name despite married into the name.

The rights to the Intimidator name expired and the team owners changed the name to the Cannon Ballers rather than deal with Theresa.

There is one "stadium" that really didn't get a chance to really do its job in Lake County, Illinois. It was a stadium built for the North Woods Baseball league's Lake County Fielders (such an original name). I believe the team only existed for 2.5 seasons. I know there is at least one video online showing some of the abandoned park. The fencing, lights and scoreboard were really the only things left the last time I was around there.

Ayeee Shreveport made it on here 😎 But honestly, it’s kinda sad to see Fair Grounds rot, especially since the city council just absolutely hates any sort of growth that costs money here (we were even slated to get a whole g-league team here that they shot down)
