I was born the same year as the Beatles. They are the music I think of when I remember being a boy, going to elementary school. They were the "old music" on the radio when I was in high school that always sounded fresh even up against things like the new Boston or Rush. How is that possible? Well to the extent that looking at the small number of instruments they used to make the magic they made can teach us anything...here goes. By far the last few years of the band are the ones that continue to touch me in a way they have no right to (ok, that came out a little weird, but you know what I mean.). So that's why I made this different sort of short history. I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you very much for this. I grew up in a home where the Beatles were just a bunch of long haired dirt bags. Myself, I was enthralled! I was born in 1955 and I was at the perfect age to "get" the Beatles. In fact, the reason that I became a rock musician was because I saw them on the Ed Sullivan show in '63 or '64. Hard to remember exactly but for me, that show was amazing! A deciding point in a young man's life. Now, I have a nice little studio, I've toured all over Canada and Europe, and life is well, as good as can be expected. I'm not rich but I am happy that I am a musician and I probably wouldn't have been if not for the Beatles.

I love how Fender wheedled their way into the Beatles orbit, and the variety of gear that was given to them. Fender understood that you spend money to make a ton more.

The only reason you didn't see George playing a Strat when they debuted on Ed Sullivan was thanks to Johnny Guitar (from Ringo's former band). George had sought out a Strat through a want ad only to find out that Johnny Guitar had bought it an hour earlier. As a consolation Fender did get a talented paratrooper who loved Strats to promote their guitar.

Almost every guitar player I know has been to House of Guitars in Rochester. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been there. Fortunately it’s a short trip from Binghamton New York. And of course having been born in 1951, I can never get enough information and backstory on The Beatles. Great job.

The Beatles changed EVERYTHING with pop music. The Ed Sullivan appearance still has echoes today in how many players were prompted to pick up a guitar and form a band and became the stars of the 70's, 80's and 90's. How influential were they? Most people my age can sing at least some of any Beatles song when asked. Music is what it is today, because of the Beatles.

A real Leslie is magical. The pedals are great, too. (I love the Neo Instruments Mini Vent II), but the real wooden cabinet is fantastic and unique. My favorite guitar sound in the world is a Fender bridge pickup through a Leslie 145/147 cabinet.

@@s2seltaeb yes it is. My favorite band, The Allman Brothers, used it regularly. I'm not sure if they put guitars through one. I do know that Gregg had one for the Hammond, though. I've been trying to learn to play some of "Mountain Jam" lately. One of my favorite ABB songs ever. Whatever I learn of ABB's will also be played at my dad's funeral when it's time. Half the reason I learned to play guitar was so I can play Allman Brothers for my dad because I know he'll be tickled to death to hear it 😁 initially, I said I wanted to learn his favorite song, Whipping Post, but I'm still a ways off from that one lol. So I tried Mountain Jam and I've actually learned a bit of it in the ast week or so.

“Roll Over Beethoven” was a life-changing moment at the young age of seven. It began a twenty year obsession with everything Beatles. It’s the reason I first picked up my father’s guitar and is the reason for a career in music.

I have my dad’s 1965 Epiphone Casino; he played Jazzy renditions of standards ‘til he passed away at age 95; who knew it would be a Beatle guitar? it must have been their amps ‘cause I’ve never got a great, Rockin’ sound out of it but it’s very cool that it’s part of my arsenal

Round wounds or flatwounds? I can tell you for a fact a Casino with round wounds through a cranked Twin Reverb will give you all the rock you ever need. You’ll be deaf not long after, but it will be glorious 😆😆

Check your pick up heights… They cannot be too close or too far away from the strings. And round wounds will be brighter but remember that they were not readily available til 69-70 or so.

@@jfredknobloch Only way to adjust dogear P90’s is to shim them up, though adjusting the polepieces can sometimes get you there.

I'm speechless. 8) Born in 1952, I just started paying attention to music when The Beatles happened. Elvis didn't seem to matter any more. I was pushing our garage band tword Dylan and the Stones more anyway, and all the other great bands, but the Beatles, there was so much to learn and play. It was such a great time... Thanks Keith, it was awesome!! 8) --gary PS, The HOG and Stutz got a lot of my $$$$ too!!! 8)

From what I understand, Fender actually gave George Harrison two rosewood Teles, the other of which he gave to Badfinger's Joey Molland. Molland moved to Minneapolis late in life, and sold this Tele to Willie's, a landmark St. Paul guitar shop. I've drooled over it a couple times, but never had the courage to ask to play it. It'd be like having a BMW in your lap, I'm too worried I'd be forced into indentured servitude for the rest of my life if I damaged it.

The hofner lap steel was sold in an apple's auction many years ago. That guitar ended with vintage gear collector Marcus Rampazzo iin Brazil. After he died, his family kept his instruments and his house became a museum.

@@danielstoddart Gold at both ends, probably not a shotgun shell. Also by the bluesmen's time shotgun shells were paper instead of metal, and by johns time they were made of plastic.

Being nine years older, I got a different experience of The Beatles, which is just as amazing as you might imagine. While most of my peers loved The Beatles, the older generation could be hateful toward them. I recall the 8th grade science final exam had a question: "Will The Beatles still be popular in a year?" If you answered "yes" you got it wrong. I am pretty sure we all answered with a resounding, "YES!" If that stupid teacher is still alive, I hope he regrets the question and all his snotty comments on The Beatles. Great video by the way!

Hi Keith, Very well done. I found my self tearing up at times. I was born in '56 and the Beatles were the core of the sound track of my life as well. My wife and I sat down last week and watched the documentary and this was a great addition. Marie Kondo would not be happy with me right now because I just have to get a rosewood Tele.

Also, you can see during the credits in Part 3 of the Get Back documentary that Paul’s Rickenbacker was stripped back to the Mapleglo finish at some point between when he was using it in part 2 and the final day of the sessions

@@ptrgreeny A lot of those guitars were loaners and rentals while others like the Gretsches were in the shop for repairs. And very few of the guitars sent to them to try out were kept.

My friend during the late 80s and early 90s Miguel Ochoa briefly had possession of “Lucy” in the early 1970s. He saw it at Sound City for sale for $500.00. Knowing that it was a vintage Les Paul he bought it and provided his phone number because the guitar had just come in and it hadn’t cleared the daily stolen gear police list. He had planned to go to Guadalajara so he took the guitar with him. Of course the guitar was Harrison’s and he was told he had to give it back. Norm from Norm’s rare guitars found two vintage Les Pauls and George’s people took them to Miguel and told him to pick one and he took one of the provided Les Pauls and gave back George’s guitar. He later traded the Les Paul for a 1957 Strat which at the time I knew him was the guitar he gigged with. In 1987 George had a comeback album and in a magazine article he said Lucy had been stolen by a Mexican. I urged Miguel to contact the magazine with a picture of himself with his Strat to correct the story but he was a shy guy and didn’t do it. On the wikipedia page for Lucy the story is documented to Include the Lucy-Miguel history.

I was in early high school when Abbey Road came out. It was the climax of years of Beatles evolution. I had been a Beatles fan from the beginning in 1964 at age 10, saw Hard Day's Night in a movie theater, it is VERY hard to describe their impact, so much of what is the culture of the whole world today was created by the Beatles. It is difficult to even begin to describe. Before the Beatles, there WERE no pop bands, young people were completely ignored, NOBODY had hair that even touched your ears, singers didn't write their own songs, music did not have anything to do with politics or peace, there were not MILLIONS of records sold in days and live tours around the world were impossible, the Beatles INVENTED all of that.

When the Beatles arrived from Hamburg most of the L Pool bands desired colourful Fenders. The Remo 4 had the first full Fender lineup in L Pool. I saw Lennon, Harrison and Mc, out front watching them in the Cavern. Musically the Remo were streets ahead of the Beatles, but the Beatles beat them on image. I think the Beatles choice of instruments was what made them unique at that time, especially the violin bass. Every musician in the Pool became aware of it. The image was dark and moody, and the Viola helped that image. All the other bands were colourful Fender, Shadows clones.

What is understated are the Burns guitars. They were popular with British bands being home grown. The Beatles rented the odd one or two, as did Elvis, for studio work. Burns had a unique sound.

Liverpool created a whole new genre of music called the Merseysound. The Beatles were not involved in creating that sound. The Remo 4 were, along with the likes of the Big 3. The Remo 4 were musically ahead of The Beatles in 1962 early 63. Listen to them and The Beatles, it is clear to see. The Beatles first single in 1962, Love Me Do, was dull and lifeless, being not well received at all by the musicians in Liverpool. It turned no one's heads. The Beatles then just took off going on their own path, leaving all behind in Liverpool, the UK and USA. It was like they had a eureka moment.

Yeah. “The LEAST Gear”! And the first thing you see is Tim Pierce in his “Cockpit” fulla equipment! Well, you can’t blame him. He’s a Bona Fide PRO. And it was only after I signed up for a year of his guitar Masterclass that I found out Tim had played on so many of the records I sat through back when I was a Radio Dee Jay! And MY Epiphone Is a Sheraton II, the semi-hollow version of the Casino. You get less feedback on a loud stage that way. I don do that often anymore, but I got this one in 1987. Thanks, Keith! Through most of the 90s, I played bass with Delaney Bramlett. George Harrison had given Delaney the rosewood Telecaster, so I've played it many times. Actually, not a great guitar. Well one day, Delaney was playing my bass. I had taken the finish off of the neck. I like the feel of raw wood. Well Delaney liked it too, so he handed me the "Rooftop Tele" and said that he wanted me to take the finish off of that neck. Believe me, I tried to talk him out of it. But he insisted. So the next day found me on my front porch, sanding the finish off of the neck of George Harrison's rosewood Tele. Surreal. I got it back to Delaney asap. I didn't like being responsible for such an iconic guitar.

@@detroitfunk313 it wasn't as smooth as maple. That's what my bass was. But the finish on the Tele was very thick. It did feel better, but not like maple would have been.

@@news603redux Delaney later sold it at auction. The actual price was $375,000. Ed Begley Jr. had the winning bid. He returned it to George's widow, which I thought was pretty cool. I've heard that it's been restored to it's original condition.

As always, a great video. The rosewood tele has an interesting story about the 'gifting.' George wanted to play in Delaney's band along with Eric Clapton. Eric spoke to Delaney who agreed on the condition George give him a gift, (?!). George gave the ungrateful lout the tele. Delaney hung onto it until George died and the as we know sold it back to the family. Delaney never got very far in his career. I wonder why.

A funny thing I hadn't noticed, but which Ted Woodford of Woodford instruments pointed out, is that Paul's Martin didn't have the saddle corrected for left-handed playing. Imagine that, all those acoustic tunes played slightly off-key!

Thanks, Keith, for another excellent dissertation. The Beatles have always been so important to me. I was 14 when they played Ed Sullivan just a few months after the trauma of the JFK assassination had plunged the country into a collective depression. They provided a breath of fresh optimism that was so desperately needed. My first "serious" girlfriend was one of those screaming girls outside the Plaza Hotel in NYC. My musical holy trinity will always be The Beatles, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Having been in elementary, junior high, and high school during the Beatles hay day nothing impacted and still impacts my love of music more than the Beatles. Although I play drums, guitar, and piano I owe much to my learning of vocal harmony to the Beatles. They helped me ear learn 3 and 4 part harmony that helps me to this day, in singing vocal harmony parts. As I have watched your video, the Get Back series, and a myriad of other Beatle lovers post their appreciation of this amazing band. I'm left with one primary thought. BTW, Andy Babiuk now has his own shop, Fab Gear, in Rochester. And he was longtime bassist for The Chesterfield Kings, and more recently for The Empty Hearts - which includes Elliot Easton. Andy's a great guy! His Beatle book is fantastic!

Excellent video. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks for sharing. At 13:49, Stuart's last name is "Sutcliffe" and at 19:23, Mal's last name is "Evans". At 17:23, the unique sound mentioned is partly due to the fact that McCartney put nylon strings on his '63 Höfner 500/1 on the Get Back-sessions. A close-up of those strings can be seen in this very video at 16:57. Also, the video is extra nice because of Tim Pierce.

One of the Rosewood Strats is in the Songbirds guitar museum vault in Chattanooga. I was fortunate enough to see it in person. The curator stated that it never got to Hendrix because he died before it was delivered... It sat in the Fender factory hanging on a wall and was eventually part of the inventory when CBS sold. Nobody thought much of it until they looked through the documentation and realized that was to be the hendrix guitar...

So much fun Keith. Great job putting this together. I have to buy a casino now. I love that Lucy is one of two famous 57 Les Pauls refinished in red played by two iconic players. Jimmy Page’s number three is the other. The one he uses on Whole Lotta Love from The Song Remains The Same movie.

As a Beatles nut I loved the Get Back doc so much and getting into the weeds with their gear was a big part of the thrill. Such an inspiring thing to watch and I'm so glad it's inspired so many others to talk about it.

I was 9 year old when The Beatles hit the radio(AM) and as everyone was still in schock over presidentKennedy tragedy there was a totally different sound compared to the beach boys, jan and dean gene pitney and so on and there was a burst of energy i guess but it was like electricity in the air soon it was on all the rock stations back then and it was the whole country..lasted a few years before settling down but it was the magic they gave to us fan's...even mama's like them while hating rolling stones!! now with internet Ive got to hear stuff I never knew existed and so nirvana for me and still hearing new to me sounds and i get a shimmer of the vibe that surrounded all that music that did change the world on many level's...thanks for your work..peace and luv

I really, really enjoyed this video, Keith. I’ve been a subscriber for a while now and always look forward to new releases. This one, well… you knocked it out of the park. I’m 6 years older than you, and yes, the Beatles played the soundtrack of my life through middle and high school. I learned to play guitar (as a beginner) using a Beatles songbook. This glimpse into the instruments of “Get Back” is fascinating, confirming so many suspicions I had for many years and blowing some of my theories out of the water, too! So thanks for doing this one, many thanks. (BTW, Tim Pierce’s intro and outro are amazing.)

As regards the popularity of the Epiphone Casino, I think that Keith Richard(s) and a little later Dave Davis were playing this model prior to its adoption by The Beatles. Great video, thanks Keith.

Watching this after they finally found the missing Hofner bass !! It was lifted from a van and traded at a local pub for a beer. The base sat in the attic of the person who received it for over 50 years without anyone knowing!

Question for the Beatles guitars historians. On "Two Of Us" rehearsals for the Get Back movie George was playing the rosewood Tele on the "bass" lines on what I thought was the track they used on the album. I always assumed prior to the movie, it was done on the Fender VI. So was the Tele, with I would assume to be the tone rolled off, actually used on the "Two Of Us" Album track?

Yes, if you watched the original Let It Be movie from 1970, you can clearly see George using his Tele for the bass part during Two of Us.

My parents were 80’s metalheads. Dad loved ozzy, and mom was into the glam bands. I was told my entire childhood that the beatles sucked. It wasn until 20 years ago as an adult that I figured out they were wrong

You don't think that what any band wears are "suits"? Wake up and smell the uniform, dude. Different era, different look, still a suit. Part of the identity of any band, you know, the look thing. The Beatles wore suits for their live act for a few years, then gave up being a live band. Take a look at their fashion groove then, cheesehead. They wrote the book on it, those English guys.

@@melvynobrien6193Context is not just important it's everything. People wore suits in those days at least adults did. The Beatles were young adults so they wore suits. As for the bowing same thing. Performers did that to say thank you for the audience appreciation. Again, it's an adult thing..

Thank you so much for the enhanced education. I was smiling even before you said they were the soundtrack of your life... I have used that phrase more times than I can count over the years. I was a few days short of ten years old when they appeared on Ed Sullivan for the first time. My mother (who was 43 and not a fan of the popular music of that time) gathered her six children around the tv and said 'You should see this. It is going to be important.' I never knew before that moment that she was a prophet.

Ry Cooder has to be one of the most important guitarists of all time having influenced the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He even plays on Captain Beefheart's first album "Safe As Milk".

I was in the middle of watching Part 2 of the Beatles "Get Back" documentary when I got notified of your "The Beatles' Guitars of "Get Back": A Short History: featuring Tim Pierce" video. Instead of watching part 3 the next day I decided to finish watching Part 2 and 3 of the documentary on the same day so that I would be ready to watch this video. If the Beatles documentary were a Special Edition DVD box set then your video is the "Bonus Features" DVD that comes with it.

I just received "The Lyric's", Paul's book on all of his songs and what they mean and how he created them. Beautiful 2 volume package. Tons of never before seen photos .Cost me about $70 on Amazon.

My understanding is that Harrison's last lead piece for the Beatles was not on Abbey Road, but in January 1970 when he and Paul and Ringo met to finish up some Let It Be tracks. There, Harrison used his Casino to play the gnarly lead guitar part on the version of the "Let It Be" song that was released on the Let it Be LP.

I think it's important to note too that, John and George didn't exactly have any other basses on hand that they could readily pick up and play since Paul's were all left-handed. The VI showed up and just conveniently sat around to be picked up whenever a bass part was needed and Paul was occupied, so I wouldn't speculate too much about preference. Great video though!

I love the Beatles & their individual achievement but George caught my eye with some of the sound he makes & his vocal style. I always feel something when ever I am near/on Hamilton Island, a place in the Noerthern Coast of Queensland. Now I resides in Perth , Western Australia & very lucky to be living close to a couple of Legends, Dave Hole & hmmm..that guy who plays guitar for The Shadows with Cliff Richard? Re : Fender guitars in Get Back You forgot to mention the RH Jazz Bass and what looks like a Malibu acoustic seen at Twickenham. Also sent by Fender but not seen in Get Back was a Fender pedal steel and Paul’s LH Jazz Bass

Sister bought Beatles as they were released; big stack of records she lent lent to a boyfriend. And that was that. Given (saved) a Texan being used as a weapon in a fight. After 317 day wait my Epi Hummingbird and Prophecy Flying V are here. Looking hard at that 61 SG. The underdog rep is a serious advantage. Love the show, thanks.
