Update: Morroiec9868 points out in the comments that the battery and vacuum voltage needs to match. For example you won't find one of these battery adapters for the Dyson V10s as they run at a higher voltage than cordless power tools. I've been using these 5ah DeWalt batteries for a year now with no issues. I make sure I don't completely deplete the battery to maintain the battery health. Thanks for the feedback Morriec and I'll update the description as I learn more!

Really need to cover the voltage issue. Seems in my research different Dysons have different voltage requirement. Unlike Amps/AmpHours/etc, this needs to be MATCHED between battery output and voltage requirements of your device. Too low and you risk damage to the appliance. Same with over.

I haven't seen any issues while slightly undervolting the Dyson V7 animal - I've been using a DeWalt "20v" lithium ion batter (really it's 18v) for a year now with no issues. Technically the Dyson wants 21.6V but like I said - no issues yet. The Dyson V10 upped the voltage so handheld batteries can't be used on that version and you won't find adapters for sale as a result. Have you seen any examples of undervolting at 18v leading to issues? I know Dyson has a low voltage cutoff that I hope protects it. Thanks for your comment!

@@AsaMakes Yes, batteries vary in voltage from completely full, to completely empty. My point was there was no mention in the video of not using a 56V battery on a 21.6V Dyson, or conversely, a 12v battery on a 21.6V Dyson. As an aside, I would be curious where you learnt that Dyson has a low voltage cutoff from, though?

Thanks for the feedback - I'll update the description to make it more clear. The Dyson handhelds must have some type of low voltage cutoff but I haven't been able to find any documentation. Your comment now makes me realize I don't know if it's in the Dyson battery or in the vacuum. When running the default battery the vacuum will stop running abruptly instead of a steady decline as it depletes the battery. The only battery data that would make sense to trigger on is some combination of volts and/or volts and time. I'm willing to bet there's a lower voltage threshold and maybe some filter to ignore big voltage drops when the motor is spooling up. So I assume: when the vacuum (or maybe the Dyson battery pack itself) measures a low voltage it shuts off abruptly. But again - no idea if this is done in the vacuum or the Dyson battery pack. So it's possible that depleting a DeWalt battery starts to do harm without a proper battery management system. I would worry about the battery lifetime more than the vacuum. I'm not an electrical engineer but I wouldn't expect undervolting a DC motor would do any harm to the vacuum. What are your thoughts?

I've just converted my V8 to a 5S Makita battery pack successfully. I did some tests using a bench power supply, turns out that the Dyson has a 15v low voltage cutoff. Which means for a 5s battery, the BMS hasn't even kicked it as 3v per cell is still in a very safe zone. And the motor speed at full voltage and 15v are the same, probably a very efficient brushless motor in the Dyson. Conclusion, it is very safe to use a 5s power tool battery pack for the V7/V8, even though the original battery pack is 6s.

@@AsaMakes What about the AH of the battery--does it need to be something specific? I know you're using 5ah...if I used a 20V battery with 2ah or 3ah, would that work or no? --total newbie to this kind of thing so any input would be greatly appreciated!

i’m going to look into this for later although i have a craftsman battery set not dewalt. i’d vacuum more if my dyson worked again. sometimes those corded ones are a pain for quick cleans ups
@AsaMakes

As long as the Craftsman batteries are 18v and someone makes an adapter it should work! Although I believe your Dyson will have to be a V8 or lower, with the V10s and up they upped the voltage of the Dyson vacuums. I hope you give it a try and it works!

Dewalt themselves make an adapter for the old 18v tools so you can run the 20v batteries too

Yes I have one of these (a proper DeWalt brand one) The only issue is I've noticed some kind of parasitic power draw when I use my 20v battery on my 18v DeWalt drill - it will drain the batter if I leave it connected. Not sure if it's an issue with my drill or my adapter. Easy fix - I just don't leave the battery connected. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

I was wondering might have Black & Decker they look like they might work. Can you tell me if they might work?
@AsaMakes
@AsaMakes 7 ай бұрын
Most likely though all the black and decker battery tools I've owned have had a low battery capacity (like 2 or 3 amp-hours from memory). So if you do get an adapter and use it with low capacity black and decker batteries you might not get a long run-time with the vacuum before needing to recharge. Check the capacity of your batteries so you aren't surprised!

If it's starting and stopping that's probably not the battery, have you checked the filter is clean? Also on mine there was an issue that the waste bucket wasn't closing all the way and would come partially loose causing it to stop

Darn, wish I could be more helpful, at least with the one that runs for 15 minutes a larger capacity battery (6ah, etc) will give a longer time time. I use two 5 amp hour batteries so one is always on charge. After using this for a year I'm starting to notice one of the batteries is getting weaker but that is to be expected - batteries will degrade over time with repeat use

What is your technical concern? Undervolting a 21.6V device with a 18V battery is not a fire risk, worst case the device doesn't turn on... this isn't a constant power device that ramps up current if volts are low The higher voltage 25V Dyson vacuums (the V10 and up) don't have adapters for handheld power tools batteries
