Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games kzfaq.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

Not only was the dog not barking when you let her out the second time, but when she came out she displayed completely different body language too. Not sure if anyone caught that. It’s nuanced, but important.

Years ago I had 4 cats that would claw at the outside of my closed bedroom door to wake me up in the morning, before I was ready to get up. I kept a large paperback book beside my bed, and when they did their clawing thing, I would throw the book at the door, and it made a really loud noise. It only took 2 times and they stopped! It works.
@sairhug
@sairhug 2 жыл бұрын
You've reminded me that my cure for the same thing involved getting up, opening the door, ignoring the cats completely (other than blocking them from coming in), and swiftly spritzing the lower part of the door with Ô De Lancôme eau de toilette spray (get a part-used bottle off eBay if you're not going to use it as your actual fragrance - it's kind of expensive as a pet deterrent otherwise!). After that, I'd just shut the door and go back to bed. Cats hate citrussy smells and certainly wouldn't want it on their paws. This worked like a dream for me, and though I have 4 cats, I've only had to use this 'chemical attack' a couple of times before their unwanted behaviour stopped. For any cats that persist with being vocal (rather than merely scratching) - your paperback thump method sounds good, but equally you could just put in some Hearos earplugs or play a white noise recording to drown them out and ignore them (try both!). As you've found, so long as they NEVER get what they want as a result of their unwanted behaviour, it's easy to break the habit. The citrussy spray method would probably work with a dog fussing at something it shouldn't be, too (electrical wires that can't be tucked away, for example) - but I've not tried that, yet. New puppy expected later in the year, so I may get to try it out then, I guess :)

oh i gotta try that. the carpet under my door is DESTOYED and almost completely missing because I always let him in. I'm afraid to make any loud noise because it's usually late at night and I live at home and don't want to wake anyone. but i'l do it anyway bcause fuck it, the carpet situation is worrying my dad a lot so if this can solve it it'll make him happy.

I had been struggling with the "positive reinforcement" approach for a while but my 14 week old puppy just won't stop barking when I'm in my office. I did the "QUIET... loud noise" technique, and he's been quietly chewing on his bone for the last hour without any more barking or whining. He really got startled and was a bit scared at first but I gave him lots of reinforcement once he was quiet and now he's fine. Sometimes, a little tough, humane love is needed.

Great “POINT” Barking is negative behavior. You don’t reward it. And every member of the family who interacts with that dog “MUST” to do that. EVERY TIME, even when there is company. Get it over with. And we can’t be nice about it because it’s not “positive” behavior. They are NOT people. And you will get members of the family saying, “you make more noise than the dog does.” You tell them, “QUIET” too. And smack your hands. We look at animals under microscopes. Not the other way around. It’s works with cat’s yowling too. Great video. And he seemed a bit apprehensive explaining that it was not positive reinforcement. I know but really, this is about training the handlers as well as correcting the animal’s behavior. Great job “👍👍

My dad did this when I was growing up each time we got a new dog. They stopped the habit really fast. He did it with we children also, stopping arguing noises or tantrums, or whining from a different room. We shut up fast too, lol. It works! He never had to raise a hand to dog or child. We all knew he was boss, and loved him for it.

When I was given my rotti (she was surrendered from a parent’s coworker) she would bark wherever she was. All the training books I read said to ignore the dog as to not positively reinforce the barking. I tried that method & the neighbors called the cops on us. 😅 This method seems more useful.

I have a 10 month corgi who barked at ants crawling outside. I've been searching the web for training tips and all the traditional guides have not worked. I tried this method but instead of him behind a door I cued up some KZfaq dog noises (dogs barking, construction etc) to get him to bark. I yelled QUIET in the same stern voice in the video and clapped LOUD. I mean, cup your hands and give it a deep clap, LOUD. It definitely spooked my dog and I waited about 5 seconds and after he made eye contact with me, I gave him a "good boy" and a treat or his favorite toy. I did play a couple rounds of fetch with him in between new noises so he wouldn't be scared of me after the clap. He really was spooked. Now he is sleeping to the dogs barking video. Thanks Beckman!!!!

I actually made it worse following another video where the trainer said to train the dog to bark on command saying that will help the dog understand because the barking will only get reinforced when prompted. I’m guessing this person just appreciates not being asked to do something that 99% (yup, totally did the math lol) of KZfaq users know is a thing, that it gives feedback to the content creator, and further the liking/subscribing/commenting also benefits said content creator. One of the things that influenced me to subscribe is his no nonsense practical attitude coupled with training that makes sense (to me). ‘Smashing that like button and not forgetting to subscribe’ falls under the practical heading of being a given/goes without saying. I could also be projecting and my interpretation completely off base.

This is basically what people always used to do with their barking dogs ! - long before we had Dog Trainers - it is common sense - it is like everyone now has forgotten what they saw and knew growing up - or maybe everyone just grew up in animal free homes ! ? I struggle to explain what looks to me - like learnt stupidity / helplessness by dog owners. Good on Joel for reminding everyone of the basics to dog ownership / training - which is logical / works and is not based on mindlessly giving treats ! !

Great video, but I am wondering about other types of barking. One of our dogs barks incessantly every time we let him out in the backyard, or take him out in the front on a leash. Pretty sure it isn't fear related, he just likes barking at nothing, or any of our neighbors, or squirrels or nothing again. The positive reinforcement method for fixing this is slow, and so far ineffective.

We have two American Akita’s. One of them becomes very excited anytime she is in the car. When we pull up to a drive-through window she will bark incessantly. Not aggressively but just excited. How can we correct this behavior. There is a gate that keeps them in the back of the car so they’re not sitting on our laps. But this also makes it difficult to access them. Really enjoy your content and have learned so much.

Try shaking a coke can fill of pennies (when the dog is in the room). Scared the living daylights out of my dog and stopped her barking!

Thanks! Going to try a can with screws in it can for my dogs incessant and ridiculous barking! We did that with a previous dog and I completely forgot about it! We are used to it, but her baby sitters who love her are not fans!

I'm pet sitting for 2 weeks for my client's two year-old Australian Heelers who bark incessantly and jump all the time. I'm going to spend these 2 weeks trying your methods for both behaviors because I'll be here every time their owners go away for the rest of the dogs' lives, and I want it to be peaceful.

Our 6 month puppy that we got as a rescue at 4 months came crate trained and potty trained. The only time she has barked (at night) is when she has had diarrhea in the middle of the night, which has happened about 3 times since we have had her. She will bark when we put her in the kennel during the day (when we are eating or leaving the house). I don't want her to bark then, but I do want her to let us know if she needs us in the middle of the night. If I use this method, will she stop barking at night if she really does need us?

Hi ,, love your video,, how about living in a Victorian house , adjoining living room wall , to neighbour , their dogs bark non stop when they leave ,, have spoken to them they are not interested.. and have told them it’s obvious they have separation anxiety, is their a device I can buy and speaker to penetrate through to their wall to shut them up ?? As I can hear them they can hear me . Thanks

Whats the approach if/when the dog becomes sensitized to it? I had done a similar thing with a bottle of water and coins inside the bottle - you shake or smack the bottle when theyre doing something and that startles them. After a couple days he eventually became used to it and ignored the shake and continued the behavior
