Are your forks leaking fork oil? Here 's how to fix leaking motorcycle forks for cheap!

I was recently working on my Honda CBR1000RR when I noticed a small drip of oil. I followed it up and noticed the left fork was leaking.
Having never come across this problem, I did some research and found out that forks can leak oil for a number of reasons.
1.) Debris between the fork seal and the fork.
2.) Damaged fork seal (usually caused by coming down hard after a wheelie)
3.) If the bike is older, the rubber could have dry rot.
Seeing as how I don't do wheelies and my bike was made in 2015, I assumed it was debris and the fork seals had some small debris in them.
This video goes over the process of cleaning out that debris, reseating the fork seals and fixing the oil leak!

Thanks for the vid....You reminded me I have buy a Seal Mate and do the job before I start doing too many miles this spring. My seals aren't visibly leaking like yours but cleaning the seals at least once a season(or year) is just good maintenance.

08 CBR1000RR... left fork was mildly leaking. Tried out this guys method with a plastic bottle on these comments and it worked:) happy camper here haha thanks KZfaq! Saved myself $260 my mechanic was gonna charge me. It’s not an absolute fix but next time they leak I’ll go ahead and replace the seals*

Thanks Blockhead. I’d asked John Maxwell how to inspect and clean before permanent damage occurs between services. He sent me to check out this video. Your video makes the point of how to inspect and clean at the first sight of trouble. Which I’m sure could save a bunch of money for a repair that could have been avoided.

I had the same problem with my Kawasaki z1000 and that little tool worked perfect for mine. As usual, good vid man 👍🏽

@@300zxdriver it worked for a long time, when it gets any particles in the seal just use the tool and your good. I used it every other oil change just to be sure there was nothing in there. Cheers man 🤙🏽🤙🏽

The Seal Mate is a nice tool, I used to use a strip of 35mm film and it works just as well, but who has 35mm film anymore? I've have mechanics tell me that it's good to do it as preventative maintenance once a year or so.

I can vouch for this. Fixed the small leak just now. Make sure you curve the plastic* no sharp edges

You can just take it for a ride to get the suspension working in between each cleaning, that will compress it dozens of times without any effort and possibly give it more force to push out anymore residual dirt.

You have to open the fork from the top and refill but that is near impossible to get the right measurement without the forks being straight up. At that point you can guess or just pull it from the bike and do a proper fork oil replacement.

A SLIGHT shading of oil is normal. You just don't want a seepage.

Because it's made for motorcycles. Just take an empty 2 liter bottle and make some yourself.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but... aren't you *supposed* to have oil coming out when you compress? I mean, that's how you prevent friction in the fork, right?
