Fix shower faucet that is only hot or cold. Valve cartridge replacement.

In this video we show how to fix a shower that won't get hot (the fix also works if it won't get cold). All it takes is a screwdriver, pair of pliers, and a replacement cartridge!
And yes, I said 'vice grip' pliers a few times, I meant 'channel lock' pliers. Although either could work just fine.
Replacement cartridges can be found at most hardware stores or online.

I saw a perfect tip for cartridges that won't move -- use a hair dryer and warm up the cartridge for 5 minutes. It works!

This worked for me after having my shower not be able to turn off for seven days. (It took me two days to figure out how to turn off the main water supply for Hot AND cold water.) One suggestion: I’ve watched many videos for this specific problem with the Moen bath handle. None of the videos say what Allen wrench size key you need. It’s 7/64”. Please add that to the description to save us time and effort. I have so many different sizes of Allen wrenches but I did not have that size which costed me two trips to the hardware store before a thorough Google search. Allen wrench key size needed: 7/64”. Thank you! 😊

This makes so so much sense thank you!! Our actual handle wasn’t on the cartridge very well at all. Eventually it just wouldn’t turn and it would fall off constantly. Eventuality it wouldn’t go back on or turn it and so we had to use a vice grip to take showers or baths. I think eventually the tool damaged the cartridge piece cause now it’s only hot, like steaming hot and hurts bad hot lol

we did similar job recently.Yes the moen part is extremely difficult to pull out.Another issue I'd like to put different set but it is not possible,because it should same type shower faucet.Anyway you did good video thumbs up

Our shower valve was stuck and we didn't have the tool, but by accident found a way to get it out without any effort. We had taken off the shower head and put an end cap on it since it was leaking some water and turned the main water valve back on to do laundry. In just a few minutes the stuck shower valve was pushed out by the water pressure (the retaining clip was removed). Just have some one ready to turn off the water supply when it comes out.

Thanks. I had the same symptoms and replacing the cartridge on my delta shower faucet got it working again. I've never seen anyone else show these symptoms. Also I put the new cartridge upside down and I was wondering why I had pressure but no hot water and then remembered your video saying to turn it around if that's the problem.

@@42Pursuit I think what he was saying is that you go to HD to get the replacement while you call Moen to send replacement cartridge. Replace the old with the HD replacement valve, then when the replacement valve comes in from Moen, return that one to HD. Otherwise he meant to return the defective one to HD.

Good video, definitely got me going in the right direction. My cartridge also wouldn't budge and I also destroyed the little plastic tool that came with the new valve. So I tried the hair dryer trick, no luck. So back to the big box store (Lowe's), bought the Moen core puller for about $15. Got the old cartridge out in about 2 minutes and was all done within 5 minutes from that point. My recommendation is to buy the core puller when you buy the cartridge because you will probably need it but if not, just return it next time your at Lowe's or wherever you bought it from.

Our problem was a bit different. From operating normally to you either get ice cold water or scalding hot, there was no middle ground (no mixing). And the gandle also seemed to be loosening. It came off in my hand today (the attaching screw went somewhere, but then my son said it happened to him a few days earlier but didn't bother to say anything to me). I'm hoping it's the screw issue, but something tells me it's the mixer.

@@riverocean4380 There is no material difference between the 1222 and the 1222b. The only difference is that "b" in the 1222b stands for "bulk." So, when large distributors like The Shower Head Store buys large bulk quantities of this cartridge, the packaging will show "b" for bulk.

@@42Pursuit Thanks for the prompt reply. We live on a farm with very hard water. Though we have a water softner, we still have issues with the cartridges. Some of them last years, some we have to replace every couple of years. So there is a difference between 1225 and 1222 I believe.

Great video as I have same faucet but mine was a nightmare. Due to our hard water the cartridge would not budge. And while barely pulling the metal piece that sticks out broke off which left nothing to pull on. Drilled out the metal center of from the that broke off and screwed in a coarse screw to give me something to pull on. Tried al the tricks I could find and nothing worked. I had to carefully drill out the plastic all around and the the middle metal part came out and that had to chip out the rest of the plastic as is was basically welded to the pipe. Over 4 hours later I have working shower again and decided time to get water softener. If you have hard water like mine and house 20+ years old prepare for no water for hours and an epic fight.

Thanks for this! This is the exact same issue we are having with our master bath shower with only getting warm water during a shower. We were told that the cartridge might need to be replaced, but the part could cost up to 300.00 depending on the make. 🤔😲

Cartridges are sometimes covered under manufacture's warranty. Check on that before you buy a replacement.

Great video. Is there a way to clean / repair the cartridge that is only letting hit water through? I rinsed it as good as i could from any visible setamint and it helped a bit, but still not great. I'm wondering if soaking it in CLR overnight or something would help as Im not able to get to a store as we are at a remote location... thanks everyone!

great video! thank you. What could be the problem with my single handle shower knob that it doesn’t have a stopping point? you can twist it to turn it on, and you can twist it to turn it off, but if you twist too far, it just goes on again …. you can keep twisting! So you have to very very carefully and specifically twist it to the “stopping point” and it’s hard to get it just right! This is crazy making! Everyone knows the handle should just twist to an Off position and stop automatically. Do you have a cartridge problem??!!

I may be the valve but there's often a plastic ring that's visible right after you remove the handle. It is the piece that usually limits the rotation of the handle. In your case it sounds like it may have been installed incorrectly, or is broken. Remove just the faucet handle and see what things look like just behind it. It may be an easy fix or require a replacement plastic piece.

After you place the retaining clip, wall plate, silver sleeve, turn on the water... (the white and black caps not yet installed) try to turn the knob clock-wise to the point water turns -off. Now put the white cap aligned with the silver sleeve. Now this is the solution part. Place the outer black plastic cap such that that screw hole is facing down not up. The screw hole side of the black cap does not need to be align to the white cap. (this was my mistake before) This way, when you screw the handle pointing down (the hole of the handle is facing down and so with the hole of the black cap is also facing down). When installed, the handle is facing down position and the water is off position as well. Yes, I agree you can twist the metal part over and over as if there is no stopping point. But when the white cap when installed, that white cap is in fix position. When last black plastic cap is installed and screwed, it has stopping point when you rotate it.

I am experiencing the exact same problem presented in video. Thank you for the presentation; I just hope that I don’t experience the same trouble removing cartridge. LOL On another note, my unit is 17 years old and there is lock on the Moen lever; and I cannot remove with a hex wrench.

Picking up a cartridge removal tool might be worth it. At least to have on hand, and return if you don't need it. What sort of lock on the lever? If it's crusted from hard water, try wrapping a rag soaked in vinegar around it to help dissolve the mineral deposits.

I have a moen control. I am not able to take the clip off, the control is recessed in the wall. Think I will call the plumber.

It gets worse when the brass cartridge breaks off entirely. I had the pleasure of drilling a hole into the center of the spool and driving in a 3/8 tap, then pulling that out with the use of pb blaster and a torch on the valve body. Great valve when its not stuck!

Any advice on a faucet that performs as such from left to right - off, hot, warm, hot, off? Pressure is fine throughout. Think this could be a potential fix? I'd really like to be able to finish my showers with cold water.

Does the handle spin 360 degrees around or does it stop at the end before it makes it all the way around? If it doesn't stop at the end or it stops really far around it may be an end-stop issue. Check the white plastic pieces that are typically right behind the handle. Pull them apart and rotate one a few notches and see if that does anything. It also sounds like hot and cold are backwards which is an easy fix by pulling out and rotating the mixer core 180 degrees and then reinstalling it.

Wow, thanks. I need to try this tomorrow. Our bath faucet all of sudden is very hard to shut off. Also, I have another bathtub but this one has two valves, all of sudden when I turn on the hot water it barely comes out but cold water comes out really nicely. Do you have any idea why? Thanks.

Hmm, not sure but it sounds like some sort of blockage to happen quickly like that. Sometimes hard water minerals will build up and then release as a clump.

My shower is to hot both cold and hot water work but trying to get it not to hot is impossible. My faucet has the clear plastic handle and it doesn’t have the white plastic piece I’ve seen others adjust. Any help would be appreciated

Since these valves can go bad over a short time It would be wise to get the extraction tool made for these valves. Also for replacing the valve it isn't necessary to remove the plate as this will hold the inside valve body in place. And always make sure to use the lubricant made for these valves and never Vaseline or oil products. Believe me I have dealt with these valves in two homes I have and Moen can really make a simple DIY project a real job. Thats why they are called MOOOEN!!!!! You grunt while working them out!!!

I noticed the cartridge that you took out has an O-ring and each end. The new cartridge you installed only had the one O-ring at the control end (Knob shaft). Is the second O-ring not necessary?

I assume that they updated the design for some good reason, so I'd say that if your replacement cartridge didn't have the second o-ring that it should be fine.

The plumbers screwed up and the cold and cold is reversed, so is it true that if the h/c tab is on the bottom that should reverse it back to normal?

Yes, I believe that is how this one is designed. Most faucet mixers have a way to flip it if the hot and cold are backwards.

There's only a few variations out there, and with a little bit of research you can generally figure out which one is in your faucet. You may have to take off the handle and cover to see what the mixer assembly looks like, and I bet if you take a picture of it and show someone that works in a home-store plumbing department they can point you in the right direction.

Hmm, hard to tell. Seems like both shouldn't fail that fast but it might be worth replacing one and seeing if that fixes the issue.

I have the same faucet and the same problem. I changed the cartridge like you did and problem is not fixed. What else do you think that might causes it?

Hmm, all I can think of is maybe a bad cartridge, or there's some issue with the water supply from either hot or cold, like a blockage or restriction or something upstream from the faucet.

Except that's not a mixer valve. It a cartridge that goes into the mixer valve

I can’t remove the set screw. So how can I remove the handle. I thought about cutting it off, then I have to get a new handle. And idea’s please.

If the set screw can't be moved due to hard water, try soaking it and the surrounding are with vinegar for some time. If it's due to rust, try soaking it with hydrogen peroxide or some penetrating fluid like PB Blaster. If those options don't work, cutting off the handle could work if done carefully. Replacement handles are easy to find as well.
