Perfect fix! I tapped the element in with a hammer (very gently) until it was snug against the coil and it works much better! Thanks so much!

Hey Tony ~ Was about to throw my 550 out when I found your video. The gun looked new so hated to waste it and your instructions did the job! Thanks a lot.

This fix worked perfectly, thank you! Ive had my soldering gun for at least 15 years through 2 apartments so I'm sure its been dropped several times. But works like new again!

thank you......got out my granddads Weller...now it works like a champ; good no-nonsense video; no silly distracting music; a good straight on objective how to do it yourself.

You just made my day!! I tried to solder some 12 gauge wires last night and what a mess, this gun has not worked properly since day one when I bought it 30 years ago. I just found your video, made a brass rod to fit in behind. This gun has never worked so good. Thank you so much!

Yup, someone must have dropped it. I checked the wiring connections and they were perfect, so then I checked KZfaq and this video described exactly the issue. The case on mine was broken-out at the spot where you put the plug in. I got this tool because it was somebody else's junk.

I just bought a weller soldering gun from the flea market for $10 and when I tested it, it wasn't heating up enough to melt the solder. After watching your video I was able to fix it and it works fine now. Thanks for the video.

Mine is about 20+ years old and was buzzing so I installed a new tip tightened it all the way down. it stopped buzzing but was still taking forever to heat up... I did this and it works great now! thanks!

Thanks, excellent tips. BTW, my lights responded well to simply removing the bulbs, wiping the "threads" down with a little WD-40, and reinstalling them -- even though they looked clean.

Great video - just ordered some new tips and was wondering if there was anything in addition I could do to increase heat, so now trying both!! Thank you!

Yes. Make tips from electrical copper wires like i have. You can have hundreds of tips at any shape or size or twist. Imagination is your limit.

Cool Video MY Problem is often I am trying to soldier kind of large connections together and the soldering gun just doesn't have enough heat energy to heat the metal up. Seems these solder irons and guns are made or small electronic factory connections... So I often just turn to a small butane torch(it looks something drug addicts might use lol) and that little flame blue tip heats up and melts the solder but good!

@@jasonmondesir-caesar8073Just adding related info to the subject to help others. Mine is a different brand but I’ll have to keep that in mind to take it apart and try your fix. Thanks

Mine blew up.. zzzt, pixies n blue smoke n shit... not that old either butt i completely ignored that doody cycle tho.. on the video though, your wrong buddy.. its induction.. your tip isnt clean and making a mechanical contact in the holes.. you might swear its tight and all but that aluminum gets an oxide on it after a good heating... as well as the copper tip.. i also used thick magnetic wire as tips, you burn off the varnish and sand it a little and it lasts a hell of alot longer than drawn bare copper wire.. i used an 8 gauge bare and a 14 gauge magnetic and the 8 burned in two before the magnetic 14 gauge.. but yea, the position of the doohicky inside that doodad with that copper winding doesnt make a difference where it is as long as the winding isnt grounding out on the doohickey or doodad and the doohickey is inserted in the doodad.. lol. Feel like i just gave the sex talk again..

This is exactly correct. The position of the shiny core rod relative to the roll of laminated steel is irrelevant. The power is transmitted to the core piece, and then to the tip as electrical current, by way of a magnetic field generated by the fine wire windings. The shiny core rod is actually functioning as a second winding consisting of only a single strand. Thus the very low voltage and very high current at the tip. What was actually wrong was the high resistance where the tip connects. Because the voltage at the tip is so low, even a small amount of oxidation significantly reduces current flow and heat at the tip. So, keep the tip shiny bright where it attaches to the gun and you will get full heating.
