Watching from Oz. Been playing 50 years and single figures the whole time. Last 2 years I’ve developed an L5-S1 disc problem. Have never had anybody including some top coaches say to rotate the hips forward as in your root cause 1. If anything, universally they’ve said the opposite. Can’t believe how this has freed my turn and rotation back and forwards. Wider turn and less stress on my lower back. Better engagement of muscles in upper legs. Accidental click on your video has led to a revelation.

Means a lot to hear that Peter. After doing my studying on the body & looking through swings I learned the correct way to setup for a safe & free pivot. Glad it helped

I do all of those habits, except I have a slightly strong grip. I have lower right back pain and I think its because of those things that are catching up with my body as I age, same age as the degree on a SW. But here's the kicker, I'm a 1.8 HC, no not 18, a 1.8. Been playing for 25years. Never taken a lesson, but I need to start fixing those issues soon. Thanks for the video.

Really interesting and a great example of how early extension isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually a reaction that allows you to hit the ball. Now the only thing is we don’t want you playing in pain so find the root cause as to why your body is producing the motion that causes your back pain & then you’ll be able to play for longer 👍🏻

Great video, Giles. Your presentation is really good - so much more flow than a lot of other YT content, especially on a fairly complex subject. Maybe you could just slow down a bit - take a brief pause every now & then so it’s not quite so frenetic but otherwise really impressive. I’ve subscribed 😊

Causes of early extension well exposed on video. Found it much easier to turn my hips with a retroverted pelvis. Have strengthened grip and kept wrist neutral rotating through shot. Swing looked much better and I didn't jump up on impact. Will need a lot of practice before I can hit it full whack though. Winter is long here !

Liked, subscribed etc. I like learning about the swing so this was great. Really detailed. Would echo what another comment said in that you could slow it down slightly at times but otherwise excellent 👍 I tend to slide my lower body towards target too much in transition rather than falling on to my left side so that could be a suggestion for a video. Happy to send you a video clip of my swing if that's a video you want to do and if it helps you.

I watched 90 percent of this vid thinking I’d wasted my time , right at the end there I am throwing my chest at the ball rushing my downswing .. for me it’s a failure to believe the balls going to go that distance without me really pushing . I don’t suffer this w-8i or woods and driver which I trust but 7, 6 and 5 irons are all off the toe weak as pee . I’m on it , but it’s hard .

Having your butt back behind you has nothing to do with creating lordosis in the lower spine - you're conflating two diff things. You can have your belt buckle pointing towards the ground AND still have a neutral lower spine - this is a very athletic and BALANCED position! Just look at major league baseball batters at the plate - even if they are standing more vertically waiting for the pitch, once they go to swing what happens? Their butt extends into a squatting position as this counter-balances the weight of the bat/arm unit as they accelerate rotationally. Same for tennis players hitting a hip high forehand shot. Same with Hockey players hitting a hard slap shot. Same, same, same! Just look at Rory's address position at the beginning of this video... butt back, buckle pointing DOWN towards the ball, AND a neutral lower spine. (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gt2mYLKHlcWcYp8.html). Initiating the downswing with the upper body and arms (instead of the lower body) is THE culprit in early extension! A player MUST stand up if he/she/they are throwing the club at the ball with their chest and arms - it's the ONLY way to avoid hitting fat shots and actually make contact with the ball! I do wish YT instructors would stop misleading ppl on this topic with things that ultimately do not matter!
@Gilesgillgolf
@Gilesgillgolf Жыл бұрын
I 100% agree with you that sticking your butt back doesn’t necessarily have to be as a result of the lower spine being in anterior pelvic tilt. However sticking your butt too far back behind (even with a neutral spine) will promote the likely hood of some form of early extension move. Now if you look at players like Adam Scott & Rory Mcilroy they both have very straight backs. Both are incredible flexible & athletic humans who train every day. For the majority of people they can’t achieve this position. If you also watch Adam Scott you will see he does suck his head back during the downswing. (which is a form of early extension) Ultimately every golfer is different & has very different flexibility levels. For the majority of golfers we have seen through biomechanics that the posture I have show in this video is safer, provides more rotational freedom & allows a player to maintain better angles. Does it mean you have to do it? Of course not but I would advise for the majority they do more mobility & safety reasons. Love the comment & hope this translates my way of thinking. Thanks Troy 👍🏻
