To heck with GM's silly design - Let's redo the drain THE RIGHT WAY!

Right down to the angle cutting of the drain end of the tube. Brilliant, thank yOU!

Good fix. I would recommend putting a rubber grommet in the hole on the body before pushing your line through. Protects the line from getting cut and helps secure it. Thanks for sharing.
@edsautomotivehowto27062 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I considered that. But the hose I used is quite tough. Plus I siliconed the heck out of it to keep it stable

My solution - permanently having the sunroof 3M sealed (disabled, can't open but can still enjoy the sun while in the vehicle). Don't have time nor the patience to deal with water leaks. Perfect solution, no more worries.

Sure, but that's not really fixing it. I've not had a single leak since making this video

I was thinking about sealing it this morning. Truck has 225xxx miles and we just keep it because it has 4wd. So what sealant did you get?

I had an 2008 H3 when i lived in Moab UT. Never had a leaky sunroof, but a few friends did. Call sign in Moab was F5Fstop

Yeah it's a super common issue in the h3. Doesn't rain much there though does it?

Also a good time to replace the Antenna wire grommet. Fixed my sunroof then bam, started getting the passenger puddle all over again 2 days later, lol.

Your fix is a good idea if you never off road the vehicle or try to drive it through deep water, as running the drains directly into the floor can cause problems if the vehicle goes through deep water, as it was intended to do. The problem with these drains is the designer intended for them to exit the body about 2 feet above the floor pan, resulting in the stupid flow lines going behind the dash. The other problem with the current design is that the drain lines turn inward from the a-pillar, and then turn forward to exit the dash panel, hence why the lines are hard plastic. Because of these turns in a hard plastic line, it is practically not possible to unclog then by snaking a stiff line from the the drain opening at the sunroof. I think the best solution is to design a sump that drains to the dash as designed, and then have the line from the a-pillar drain into the sump. This would eliminate flow problems and the lines could be snaked from the drain openings at the sunroof. Unfortunately, this would require tearing the dash apart to install it.

Thanks for the comment.... But I Off road A LOT. That's literally all I have this truck for. This still works great, because the tubes are sealed with silicone and bed liner where they go through the bottom of the chassis. I've been through deep water many times and I've had no problems.

Hi Ed, could I please get the size hose you used? I’m gonna try your method since I can’t seem to find a grommet anywhere online to replace the 1 I dropped. Gonna get some type of grommet though to put in the newly drilled hole I’m gonna drill. Thank you for your video!
@edsgarage001 Жыл бұрын
It was so long ago, I can't remember. But I think it was 3/8" vinyl hose. When you go to buy some hose, just bring a piece of the old stuff with you to size it. Years later, I've still got no leaks and it's required no cleaning or maintaining

Warm water in each inlet. If that does not work then its a bit more tricky. You need to take the covers of on the side that is blocked. Be careful with your trims and air bags. Follow the line. Seperate the line and blow in the hose yourself. You will be surprised. It works. Also make sure water is not to hot. Just warm. A teaspoon of white vinegar before you start to operate added with the warm water helps. Give it a day even to work through. The warm water loosens the line and the white vinegar cleans out the junk.

Except that's only a temporary "fix" until it clogs up again. My video shows how to completely eliminate the problem.

I have an 08 alpha. I traced my drains down from the moon roof. Mine go to a rubber garment in the floor. Just where floor and firewall come together. By the kick panel. Maybe they they changed design in 08?
@edsgarage001 Жыл бұрын
Really? That's cool. Maybe the previous owner already did the same modification ? Or maybe the alpha is different.

You definitely could use a new grommet... But I wanted the pipe itself to go right outside. Years later, so far so good!

I got the driver side done and proceeded to do the passenger side. Got the grommet off and when putting it back in I dropped it!! Should have put the hose back on it 1st but I didn’t 🤦🏼♀️ and in the process I dropped it and can’t find it anywhere. I took everything off and out of the way that I could but still can’t find it. Have looked online and cannot find a grommet that looks close enough to it. So my question is, does anyone know where OR what I can use in its place? Thank you in advance!
@edsgarage001 Жыл бұрын
Mine fell out with the remnants of the hold plastic hose while I was off-roading lol. I wouldn't be too worried about putting it back if you're using my suggestion in this video. But you can generally find rubber plugs and grommets in universal sizes at your local parts store
@user-mm2qh5wz4h Жыл бұрын
I just took the rubber grommet off took a big drill bit and cut the little flappy doodles off and it's draining fine now.

@blakegrunwell54426 күн бұрын
Can you just blow it out with compressed air somehow
@edsautomotivehowto27066 күн бұрын
You could, but that doesn't always work. Plus you risk blowing the pipe off of the nipple... Then it'll just leak even worse. This is truly the best way to correct a poorly designed drainage system

Could I get a list of the supplies that are needed? I’m a woman and I really don’t have the money to take it to the shop😢 oh how I wish I could pay you🥺 not only is the leaks damaging the inside it seems to get worst because I now see water in the back drive seat also!! HELP ME PLEASE
@edsautomotivehowto27062 жыл бұрын
The fact that you're a woman doesn't matter. You, like me, can do anything you set your mind to. You're going to need some tubing, the type doesn't really matter, but I'm pretty sure the stuff I used was vinyl tube. There's not really much else in the way of supplies really.... Just the tubing, some hose clamps. A drill to get the holes in the floor drilled out. Some silicone, I would suggest Black rtv automotive silicone. Start pulling it apart and watch the video, following each step. You can do it!
