Cities Skylines Industries:
In one of the most in-depth expansions in Cities: Skylines history, Industry becomes a larger and more meaningful part of the game with this expansion. Players can customize their industrial areas with supply chains for the four different resource types and unique factories. Well managed industry areas will level up and become more efficient. Aside from production chains, there is a new city service for handling mail and the cargo airport eases import and export of factory goods. There are FIVE new maps, new policies, new city services, new buildings (including resource extractors, manufacturers, warehouses and unique factories) and more.
Key Features:
- MAKE IT HAPPEN
Follow your products from harvesting to processing, storage and production, then transport them to commercial zones or export to other cities.
- CAPTAIN YOUR OWN INDUSTRIES
Define an area with the industry area tool and place highly specialized industrial buildings to build and manage the production chain from raw material extraction up to final end product. Industry Areas are divided into four types based on the natural resource they are processing: Farming, Forest, Ore and Oil. These areas can level up upon reaching productions goals and staffing requirements.
- BUILD IT UP, BUTTERCUP
New industrial buildings include Extractors, Warehouse Facilities, Processing and Auxiliary Buildings, Industrial Props and Roads. Unique Factories, such as Food, Toy, Furniture, Car and Electronics produce luxury products, and require a large number of workers, water and electricity as well as input from your industries.
- GO POSTAL
Boost your citizens’ well-being with mail delivery and collection services. Post sorting facilities handle mail between outside connections and the post offices, and new Post Van and Truck vehicles enable the carriage.
- WONK HARD

The design would work better if he zones the sections differently. He putting a lot of traffic-maker buildings near the roundabouts. Just move the things out faraway or divide them into smaller sectors spread throughout the cities instead of putting everything in one place. Good design, great application of basic traffic managing, just bad sector placing lol

@Mathignihilcehk
@Mathignihilcehk 4 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference is that real world traffic spends more time trying to make roads safer and less time trying to reduce traffic congestion. Cities Skylines does not have adequate traffic safety consideration. To do that, you'd have to implement drivers which occasionally disobey traffic rules and cause accidents. The key concern for safety is that slower vehicles are less likely to break traffic rules and cause major accidents. And so you get nightmare-levels of traffic. Of course, if people followed the law, then we could design traffic to be minimal, but we don't live in that fairy tale world yet.

Keep watching Biffa and others, I know Sam Burr also has some good CS videos as well, you'll learn how to do traffic management. Add to that learning what buildings create traffic, where that traffic will want to go, and how they'll need to get there. (eg residential buildings will create workers who'll want to go to commercial and industrial workplaces). plan hubs and arterial roads to move them from residential to workplace. Disperse residneces and workplaces a bit, so you don't get everyone going in the same direction at the same time. Give alternatives, both in mode of travel (road, bus, metro, walking, cycling, etc), and in routes (multiple different roads that connect neighborhoods together). So in short, plan for traffic to have a sensible route from A to B, give different ways to go from A to B, and disperse traffic in different directions, so some will go from A to B, others from A to C, and so on.

@@christophergallagher3721 That can be a powerful tool to convince people to switch from cars to transit where transit is available. The thing to be aware of is that those trains and buses aren't free to buy and run, so the money's got to come from somewhere. If your tax revenues aren't up to the task, you'll be left with no choice but to charge fares to cover the cost of running the system, or risk your city going bankrupt. I prefer to take stock of the situation and pick the best strategies to meet the needs of the citizens while at the same time not angering the banker.

That is why they have metering loops in most streets. Not only do they measure how much traffic there is, but the information is also send to central datacenters for processing. That information is often often used to create 'green waves' to gives motorist green lights on all the crossing on heavy traffic roads (as long you obey the speed limit). Traffic engineering is pretty much like any dynamic fluid engineering job. That is why engineers are calling it a traffic flow.. One of the earliest areas where AI was introduces was traffic control and for AI control you need lots of data. Google Maps can also show you congestion on roads (most based on cell phone movement provided by providers, but also by android phones with location services turned on). However traffic centers have that information per lane. Counter loops always have at least two wires. The time it takes to cross both wires gives you the speed (in centimeters|inches/ms), Also road camera images are processed using AI to determine traffic flow and is also used to recognized when someone is on the emergency shoulder and usually some roadside assistance company (like AAA) is informed and they dispatch someone to help you out. When people see a car on the shoulder standing still most of them lower their speed and that causes a break reaction chain further back. That is why more and more emergency services setup screens on highway to limit the view so people keep their focus on the road and not the accident..

My second city got hosed by having the industrial district further away from the highway than my residential zones, then cargo trains backing up major roadways due to space constrictions. I'm on my third one, which is much better - part of it is having two cargo train depots on either side of a giant oil shale that's most of my industry. Thanks to another Biffa video, I knew to have those depots on roads that are used exclusively for the depots, and to have a bit of a winding leadup to them. I've managed to keep my city at 82+% the entire time so far (currently at ~45k people).

I think you can consider 85%+ to be equal to perfect traffic in this game, those 15% are usually just perfectly fine traffic. If you want to have decent industry, especially with the DLC there is no way to go lower anyway, because busy industry streets and roads coming up to e.g. train depots will always have a lot of traffic. I don't look at the number any more at all, I just check if any of my red-ish areas are actually causing traffic problems or if they are just busy.

i run modded double Decker buses. (70/bus) 30 pax buses works, if you don't count standees, and other than rural roads what bus doesn't have standees at times? i also run even smaller buses on my low pax runs. sometimes i kinda want a comfort booster/negative for the public transit. with buses and such taking like +100% of rated max(EG the buses we have now taking 60 if needed) if a stop is that stuffed, but taking comfort hit to the route, dropping its popularity; likewise if a bus/stops aren't stuffed, it might see more traffic.

But for people without the CPU cycles to spare, the way to solve cars not using all of the lanes on a roundabout is the same as on any street. Use the lane arrow switcher to make single use lanes. All of those cars were diving into the middle of that giant roundabout because all of the exit lanes were setup to exit *and* to carry through. A lot of people misconstrue that and think 4+ lane roundabouts just don't work, but they absolutely do if you set up the lanes correctly.

That turn-around was incredible! I know you hate the bus stops on junctions, but I've seen so many pedestrian crossings literally on the roundabout exits in places like Colchester and Crewe, I think they're worse as they always block up the busiest parts of the town. If only the "driving over the top of others" thing in Cities worked IRL...

i love that all the comments are praising the design of the city as opposed to calling it ridiculous. clearly the original designer had a fantastic vision for his city that the game didn't want to play ball on (with regards to the roundabout, at least), requiring a more detailed management. but it's beautiful how well it works once the appropriate attention was given. great work.

Reminds me of my city of 120k+ shaped as a hexagon that spanned across 3x3 zones... and the only way to enter was through the center. I had 3 roundabouts set up; ground, underground freeway and above ground. No public transport. Vehicles only. 95% traffic flow. I had to edit every single junction to keep the flow moving. It was beautiful.

"No lane switching" works only in games. :D :D Unless you put in spikes and build a wall between the lanes no one would obey that, hahahaha. Maybe in nice civilised countries like the UK or the Netherlands, but in Zagreb, Croatia, people would drive over their grandmas' graves to get around you or turn somewhere they aren't allowed to turn. I've watched a guy climb over the curb and onto a pretty little stretch of grass separating the opposite traffic on the road just to get a few metres closer to the traffic light.

I could tell the minute the video started the issue with the roundabouts allowing everyone through. One issue with roundabout builder is it will turn on the pass through junction indicator for both the roundabout and the joining road. You have to turn it off for the joining road. Also, if you add roads later, you need to make sure the give way and through are turned on properly (orange diamonds and yield signs). IMHO, this city could also do with a more comprehensive metro system where the metros service an area and then link up with each other at the central hub, as a hand off station.

I would be building in 2 interchanges of 4 levels. One 4 level serves NSEW, the other 4 level serves Ne,Se,Sw,Nw, then connect them with a nice wild roundabout. Through traffic could just blow through, at least half the traffic would have freeflowing access, and the roundabout would hopefully keep the rest fairly freeflowing.

The problem with those buses is that there are too many AND that they only got room for 30 people. Get a bigger bus. I use 75-150 buses... works great. But a good city always has trams on dedicated lines, and metro lines for speedy travel ;)

If you want to have three lanes per direction and also a bus lane, use the 8 lane road and restrict the outermost lane to buses. If you like to micro-manage your junctions, you can even separate this restricted lane from the other three with timed traffic lights, TM:PE will actually see the restricted lane as a bus lane with dedicated signals.
@Luredreier

surprised you didn't check that the outer were allowed to enter the junction first, the blocked roundabout really looked like this was the main problem, would have been interesting if only applying this single fix would have already done a lot. It's def. one of the most important tools. I think generally speaking his traffic management was really good in terms of the roads and the city design, just had to properly set up some roundabouts and maybe get rid of 1-2 junctions and it was much better. The Bus problem I know well myself, I started putting all the bus stops in side lanes ever since and it works much better :D

The lesson I've learned both form these videos and playing Cities Skylines in general is that getting overly cute with your roads invariably leads to disaster. Keep it simple with clear routes to every major area and the highways, as well as proper mass trnasit and things tend to flow well. Try to outsmart yourself, or get overly "artsy" with your city layout and, well... this happens. That's not to say I don't get that many people like to make unique looking cities like this and to heck with the traffic consequences, but if your goal is a functional city first and foremost, then avoid doing things like this.

Love this video! Just one observation... From 14:56 - 15:38, all of the traffic joining from the slip road/lane onto the main road seems to be forced into the right turn-only lane. I'm assuming there isn't a node in the mix which allows them to change lanes. I watched it again just to be sure, and there wasn't a single vehicle that went straight at the intersection. They ALL turned right.

on the big 8 way, the round about is being used for the primary traffic instead of an on and off ramp. On the ring road roundabouts, punch a bridge across for the ring road for the primary traffic and use the roundabout for a slip lane to change directions. Buildings on the roundabouts, close spaced intersections on arterials, lane math. Things I see in the first 2 minutes.

I would suggest rebuilding the central network. All 8 of those main roads need only 3 to 5 crossovers max. Ideally later on metro will be 60 to 75% of your traffic usage. Subways can soak up so much traffic when you got them setup right (near key areas like parks/ job clusters). Buses as your residential to commercial only. Keep city vehicals out of industry. Subway only there. Cargo terminals need to be far away from residential and only close enough to industrial/ commercial so that the traffic they produce is soaked up by a road free of outside traffic. Anyways I love the city. It needs only a little bit more TLC to be functional but it looks awesome.

I can tell exactly what happened while making this savegame. The person wanted to design a pre-planned city road layout, got the roads and that massive central interchange built/placed, started zoning, put in some public transportation, realized after a bit that the traffic was horrible because the distribution of traffic didn't meet the perfectly symmetrical nature of the road layout, put in dozens of mini-roundabouts and slip lanes to mitigate, and then when nothing else was working they sent the savegame to Biffa. Personally, the idea of a radial city like this is a great idea, but areas that will demand higher traffic densities need to be placed opposite each other and residential areas somewhat towards the middle of the city. In that case, you can spread out all your industrial and IT areas and minimize the amount of traffic all in one zone. Redundancy can also help reduce the traffic, such as with multiple airports/cargo stations so that trucks don't have to travel long distances within the city to reach their destinations. TL;DR: The person planned the city's road layout fine, but didn't plan the entire infrastructural layout, and had to get Biffa to sort out the now nightmareish traffic.
