I'm really grateful for videos like this one. I'm busy repairing a HP8557A which is the daddy of this model. I can see a number of upgrades which address issues I'm facing in the older version. The rotary switch issues are the same, plus a few more. Thanks for showing this repair!👍

Good morning Sir. and thanks for the video. You may adjust the frequency readout on the HP 8559a with a small flat screw driver . The hole next to the readout is for that function

A friend of mine gave me his 8558B a while back. It's not been used for a few decades so it will be interesting to see what the results are like. Thanks to Andrew for this helpful video, I suspect the 8559A is a similar unit with just a different frequency range.

Miss-spelled Spectrum Analyzer, ha-ha. Very good video.

On the spectrum analyzer the frequency display is jumping up and down. Is this a PLL stabilized oscillator or its based on a VCO tuned without feedback?

i bet that loop in the coax was there just to make assembly easier.

I think it was to avoid mechanical stress on the connectors as the unit temperature cycles and thereby reliability.

Just picked up one of these, except it came in a 180C display and I can't seem to get a trace to display (only get dots)

Hi Andrew - could you do a video on the HP 8755C swept amplitude analyzer? I'd be really interested to see it working and there is virtually no information about them on the internet. Thanks

I had to fix it (caps) three years ago but did not bother editing it as i did not think anybody would be interested.

@@andrewmcneil Well if you can 'dust it off' I'd certainly be interested :-)

The market for used spectrum analyzers has gone mad lately. I've seen thousands of dollars for ones which don't even work!

I send you a small message about 3 days ago, while looking at one of your old videos. I was wondering if for some reason you just never saw it "since it was such an old post.... I do not want to be one of those annoying nagging people, but would you care to share what type of antenna would you use for "Directional video transmission "? i just notice that after an incredibly amount of money spend on circular polarized antennas... "When I was in a pinch use the original OEM that comes with the package to find out that the original was way better than the one's that I pay a truck load of money for... so your advice will have a great deal of meaning for me..

Hi I have just returned from a 3 week holiday so it is probably buried in the 1000+ emails the channel is getting a bit popular! Are you looking at making your own antenna? And what antenna are you using to transmit?

Yes sir I was using circular polarize "Clover Leaf" antennas. with my 5.8 GHz transmitter, but as I mentioned before, one day out of desperation after a RC Plane landed & inverted it self destroying the circular polarized antenna I decide to use the one that is provided with the transmitter... and it was about 20 times better than the expensive ones... My goal is to make one my self! That can be used totally as the yaggi antenna "Directional.. in that way I can assign a 3 position switch/channel and in my ground station I can keep using my patch antenna.. thanks for the prompt replay

Where did you buy the cloverleaf from as it is a well proven design and should out perform the rubber duck you got with the transmitter. If you want to have a go yourself I would start with a biquad as it is easy to build with a wide beam and long range. I am not a fan of the yagi as they tend to work great over a medium distance but drop of rapidly.

Well to be bluntly honest with you, I have been thinking that may be one of the most important reasons I have not been having half way decent reception, was because I have almost a meter extension cable between the transmitter and the antenna... I always tried to keep the airfoil of the plane with not obstacles, and up until now I have always look down in to bringing the transmitter out on to the wing... but your statement of the clover leaf been such a good choice... I will be giving it a go again and see what happen, I was so frustrated because I never manage to make it any farther than a kilometer away from my takeoff point that I even acquire, 900-1.3& 303 video transmitters looking forth to have a decent video quality.. Thank you very much for your valuable time and wisdom.
