Oh man this was a good watch. I happen to be fixing my own tracked spider lift in my back yard right now. Doing a full hose replace up the main pantograph - not easy. I was having nightmares about the main lifting ram leaking just like this. Dry so far... I can't wait to see how you get that sucker out. Did you ever check the cylinder drift with a dial gauge? Mine seems to be within spec for now..

Can’t beat the 11 in 1 for a carry all screwdriver. As an electrician I use them a lot in attics, and crawl spaces. One tool is much easier to keep up with!

I appreciate your persistence. That bottom pin was ridiculous and yet so gratifying when it finally popped. As an engineer that has helped to design, build, and test all sorts of funky custom machinery, I really like seeing the variety of problems you've been handling. Did you try lubricating the pin before trying to remove it? I had a similar problem and I just sprayed with wd40 and then came back to it later and it finally worked.

King pins will rust if you use the wrong type of grease. High-melting point grease as used in bearings often has a lithium base, which is hygroscopic. No problem when it runs hot most of the time but if you use that grease for a king pin it will suck up water like a sponge! In the past I have used stern tube oil (for ships' propeller bearings) and I have used Wynns or STP "oil treatment" for old engines. Both resist rusting but need to be applied more often than grease because they are less thixotropic (more runny). Castrol CL grease is good. Castrol LM is not.

Really excellent editing, your voice is radio dj perfect, your knowledge is astounding, your subjects are interesting and rich and lastly you are broadcasting this feeling of enormous competence so the viewer can just sit back and enjoy. Yes, the choke element is a bi-metal strip wound into a coil. Running electricity through it, heats it. The two metals it is made of expand at different rates. This will cause it to open. closes as it is cooled.

My dad uses a good trick when you can’t get something to take grease. He adapted the end of his port-a-power with a grease coupler. Then you can pump high pressure oil into the joint to blow out the obstruction. Works great. Thanks for the video.

Thanks enjoy all your content. One trick my Dad taught me on king pins was to grind a small flat longitudinal spot on the pins at the grease hole exit point. tends to clog less and helps spread the grease. You can also go around the pin but take it easy doesn't need to be deep. Glad you couldn't hear me screaming "hit it, just hit the damn thing" when you jacked up on your home made press. For that kingpin...I saw a youtube video recently about penetrating fluids. Turns out the best is candle wax!!!! Heat it up, apply some wax so it melts and it will wick into the joint. Let it cool... In that video it worked WAY better than all the spray can products.

Great job on the king pins. I admire your persistence getting them out. The main cylinder leak really sucks - it looks massive. BTW I really like the smell of Fluid Film too, haha.

31:55 Use a large wrench on that pin plate and force it to turn. You may also try to wedge a piece of steel against the inner frame and the plate, then force the wheel assembly to move agaist the obstruction...in effect 'turning' the pin inside the wheel frame.

Big ultrasonic parts cleaners are a must for cleaning carbs deep passages out. I've fought clogged tiny idle passages in VW carbs that carb cleaner and air pressure wouldn't clear out. Even a soak in Berrymans watered down version they sell these days didn't do anything. So, years ago I bought a big ultrasonic parts cleaner. After fully disassembling the carb, I cleaned it in that ultrasonic cleaner. Man, it cleaned that carb and all it's tiny passages out beautifully.

Really great video, thank you. I might have tried applying downward force to the axle using tractor loader or excavator to make machine "heavier" whilst jacking up pin to save making press but the result is what counts!

I had to install a wifi antenna about 60 feet up, on an existing mast. Used a large list like yours, and you are right, *everything gets your attention when you are that high off the ground. That was the highest I have ever been in a lift, and am grateful that I will never have to do it again.

*- **29:30** ... Ahhhhhhhhhhh, I finally got relief. "Maybe I can get some heat on this.* *- My first fix/repair mechanic education was on stone crusher equipment, and old trucks...I was taught to push over the acetylene torch close to the work area of the men who taught me.* *- Guess why I was taught to 1st stage that in any area where they were fixing something.* *- The second tool was a can of ether to freeze everything first before heating what was needed.* *-**32:28** "I got the makings of a shop press right here." Impressed me. Good for you.*

Great work John on the maintenance, the king pins were a real fight. Just a FYI, just watched a power co. pro bring down a BIG dead Ash from the top down, and his method was a single cut starting at the side facing him and doing a 45* angle cut down and away from himself leaving the hinge wood on the side away from him. Then just gave a push away from the bucket and away it went, bout a 28" tree toward the bottom.

I've had to do some pretty stubborn king pins on charter buses before. We had a specialized 50 ton portable hydraulic press for pushing them out. I can remember one, we had the full force of the press on it and it still took 8 hours of heating and beating with a rosebud and a sledgehammer. When it finally broke free it sounded like someone fired off a 50 cal. I do not miss doing those.

That wrong lever moment very nicely demonstrated why a harness isn’t such a bad idea. To be fair, first hour of running a lift of any kind every move for me is as jerky as that. A tether for the chainsaw like the arborists use might also be a nice addition, nice to know that you can just let it go in case you suddenly need an extra hand.

Tether anything you don't want to fall. I talked to a guy who worked on cell towers. I forgot if it was him or a buddy, but either way, one of them got up to the top of a large tower. Maybe 800 feet? 1,000 feet? Either way, they went to go grab a tool and dropped it. At that point you shout "Falling Tool" over the radio. Something like that. Everyone scatters, so they don't get a wrench through the noggin. Well, foreman or supervisor or whatever says, "Alright, come on down". They come on down. They're handed the fallen tool and they head for their truck. Foreman asked where they're going. They say "home". Foreman tells them the job isn't done, so they have to get back up there. How bad would that suck? Having to climb a 1,000 foot tower twice in a day because you dropped your 10mm socket. Look up "tower climbing" or something like that. It isn't like they just climb ladders. Tether your tools.

That is a twenty year old machine so keep the check book handy. I worked on these booms for a rental company so all I can say is best of luck. That brand of equipment is top of the line if that makes you feel better.

Hey John, kudos to you sir for going the extra mile with the car y and lower kingpin. Sorry the cylinder failed but mate, you will have a fully serviceable and reliable machine in the end. You have to make allowance for used gear, the shell is solid and once you sort this cylinder let’s hope that the end, main thing is you are overcoming these problems with your own skill. Great video. That looks like a Ford 2.3 engine (Pinto) Due to the age I would strongly consider a timing belt and tensioner. Cheap insurance

Remove the bottom zerk and drill it like you did the top king pin. Then shoot some grease into it. Work is more fun when you do it.

I hope someone is going to pick up the logs for the fire. I would like you to make a dummy, fill it with sand to about two hundred pounds weight, then put the harness on it and tip it from the basket. Then you could see how much pressure the harness exerts. Does your harness strap have any spring loading on it?. Just love your channel, your tenacity when encountering snags is something to behold. All the best from UK.
