Those flathead sixes were also used in industrial forklifts. They're practically bulletproof. Good strong engine.

A big 265 flathead was last used in '54 and physically looks like the 230. All Canadian sixes were the big series of sixes.

When you said it blew a seal reminded of a cute joke my grandpa told me .""One day a penguin was driving a long in his car when all of the sudden the engine started to make a funny noise." "startled the penguin pulled in to the first repair shop he came across and told the mechanic what was going on. " The mechanic told the penguin he would take a look at it but it might take an hour to figure out what the engine was doing. " The penguin said what ever time it takes will be fine . " At that moment the penguin saw that there was a ice cream shop across the street . " He told the mechanic I will go over there and get some ice cream while the mechanic checked out the engine. So the penguin went into the ice cream shop and sat down and ordered some vanilla ice cream and he was just sloppy with eating it burying his beak into it and just getting all over his beak and face . " It was then he noticed the time and left the ice cream shop to go back to the mechanic and find out what happened to his cars engine. The penguin left the ice cream shop in such a hurry he didn't take the time to wash the vanilla ice cream off his face .when he asked the mechanic what he found out about the noisey engine , " the mechanic told him " it looks like you blew a seal . At this the penguin wiped his fingers across his beak and said no... "that's just vanilla ice cream.

There are needle connectors that are float soldered on a circuit board on the instrument cluster. Usually the solder joints break. You need to take an eyedropper and put a couple drops of SAE 30 oil under the distributor rotor. There is a felt pad. The engine sounds fine, I’m sure it’s got mechanical lifters.

Remember that on a car without a coolant recovery tank, you keep the coolant level just over the tubes in the radiator. if you fill it up too far it will push out the overflow until it creates enough expansion room.

An old MoPar tech here. I worked on those. The spring on the brake drums was supposed to help with squealing, but they still squealed. That system was Chrysler's Total Contact Brake System. If they are adjusted right, they work good. If not, they pull to the right or left and randomly too. You never know which way. Each wheel has 2 eccentrics to adjust the brakes- top and bottom. Both brake shoes are adjusted separately. 2 wheel cylinders too. One for each shoe. You can fiddle away a lot of time adjusting them. Once you learn them, you get a "feel" for them and you can get them right quickly.

After all the obvious brake work is done, I would replace all the rubber hoses too! Even if they look brand new on the outside, they can be collapsed on the inside due age. That might be the reason you're not getting fluid out of the back bleeders as well...unless your metal lines are clogged. Best of luck my friend. Keep up the good work.

Properly adjusted and maintained drum brakes work just fine. A disc brake conversion is not necessary. However a dual pot master cylinder is a nice upgrade. I did that conversion on my '56 Buick. I had the drum brakes completely rebuilt and had a battle born power brake conversion installed. That old Buick now stops basically like a modern car.
@danr1920

My Dad had a '57, at 70 mph they faded in a panic stop at about 20 mph. These drums are tiny for such a big car. My '65 Corvairs look a lot bigger and a much lighter car. Buick actually were noted for great brakes, much larger than other cars of the time.

In 57, my dad bought a new 57 Savoy 2 door. It was white with the maroon trim. Pushbutton auto, V8 (301 or 318), radio, and heater. By the time I was old enough to drive it in 1966, it was rotted away and was not running well at all. Sadly, it was not worth fixing back then. The few times I did drive it around the block, it was a real tank to steer.
@auteurfiddler8706
@auteurfiddler8706 2 жыл бұрын
Just to correct: The left hand bolts go on the left side of the car. That is to say, the driver side. If you have left hand threaded drums on the passengers side, someone had swapped the drums from side to side or put a driver side drum on the passengers side. You should not have to guess since an "L" is visible on the head of the bolts on this car or on the end of the stud on drums with studs like 60's cars. 1971 was the last year of left handed nuts on most Chrysler models. The left handed studs are out of stock and left handed bolts are expensive, so take good care of them. The left side can be converted to convention right hand versions if you break a stud. Brake shops can convert from bolts to studs and make the switch to right hand on all four wheels if desired. You may have noticed that there are 5 rivets that hold the drum to the hub, one of which is a peg to assist mounting the wheel since there are no studs. This makes it hard to use newer wheels. Most new wheels don't have clearance for the rivets and none have clearance for the peg. You can cut and grind the peg down so it is only the height of a rivet, but you can't remove them. You almost have to use the stock wheels. AAR, I guess you know from your previous experience with the Dodge that the rear drums will need a puller to come off.

On Chrysler products it is the left (driver's) side wheels that have left hand threads not the right (passenger's) side as he claims unless someone switched the hubs and drums. The studs on the driver's side have an L stamped in their ends to remind you when you are changing a flat tire. After 1972 Chrysler changed to right hand threads on both sides. These cars did not have good brakes as originally built.

There is a voltage dropping resistor in the dash of that 57, as I recall. That allows the gauges to operate, as they don't work on 12 volts DC. Sometimes it goes bad because they run warm and oxidation sets in to cause to be intermittent. Smacking the dash causes the connections to work again. Regarding the water out the overflow, that is the reason they now use the expansion reservoir on cars today. Simply water expands, then when it shrinks, the radiator will appear to be low. My old car was never full all the time.
