Logitech Spotlight Remote dies when not used for a long time. It is normal to expect that the battery gets depleted over time. However, after the depletion, one finds that the unit cannot be charged anymore. The solution is to open the unit, solder a couple of wires to the battery terminals and charge the battery externally.

Hi, great guide. Saved my presenter after pandemic death. 🙂 Step by step I had success with this: - connect USB-C to power bank and switch power bank on (safer, because no line voltage) - connect 2 AA batteries (+ to -) with neodym magnet - connect 2 jumper wires (or similar) to batteries with neodym magnet - just put wire between magnet and battery pole - hold cable on + to contact in presenter with red wire - hold cable on - to contact in presenter with black wire - a few (2-5) seconds later the vibration alarm of the presenter makes some "brr brr" - charging led on presenter starts flashing - remove wires - charging led on presenter still flashing - let charge until flashing finishes - start charging 2 more times by removing and reconnecting USB-C cable So no soldering needed, no long waiting needed, because power bank continues charging after presenter has booted. Reason is that the charging circuit needs a short "jump start" to see that the build in battery is present. And with the cable and power bank connected while jump starting, there is no need to externally charge the battery, as the internal circuit takes over immediately. So hanks a lot for this great research work!

Such a disappointing design from Logitech. I wonder how many people's remotes have similarly died from inactivity during the pandemic. Thanks for a great video!

Indeed it is a significant flaw. I was even pondering leaving the wires there, since, sooner or later, it will die this way again. However, having it melt in your pocket, due to an accidental short-circuit, is an even worse possibility.

I had the same issue with my Spotlight failing to charge after 2 years in my drawer. To be honest, I was sceptical about this, but I had nothing to lose as my device was also dead and Logitech wouldn't support me as my device was out of warranty, so I gave it a try. Having opened the back with a craft knife (from the bottom rather than the top, so that the retaining clip is inactive), and peeled away the protective tape, 2-3 seconds with a 9V battery across the terminals and my Spotlight burst into life. It is now charging away merrily. The existing glue was enough to re-attach the cover, and there is only very slight damage to the cover and case, but it's a price well worth paying. WELL DONE OP - GREAT ADVICE.

Also had to resurrect mine. I too opened it up from the bottom (so the end closer to the middle of the unit), to preserve the retaining pin closer to the end near the top. Careful use of a hobby knife to pry it up and then a pry tool to retrieve the rest meant a very non-destructive opening. Carefully lifting it up, I was able to remove the grey part. I then used a very fine pair of tweezers to remove the translucent yellow plastic over the two contacts that are connected to the red and black wires, and using the matching probes on a multimeter, tapped it a few times whilst the spotlight was plugged into USB - and it came to life! No soldering, not even needing to be too particularly careful about holding some batteries and wires to the contacts, just a multimeter turned on to amp reading.

Thanks for that. Used my lab power supply to do the initial charge. Below 5 Volts, the battery did not draw any current, once I hit 5 volts, it jumped up to around 1A which decreased to 500mA over 10 minutes or so. As indicated in the video, I then charged it with a "normal" charger, and it immediately came back to life.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. It really worked with me and the battery now is charging normally. Unfortunately, logitech did not respond well to this issue. What I did: - I used Panasonic AA battery charger. - I took two cables with different colors (so I do not messed up the negative and positive). - I place them as shown in the video with wooden stick (Note, I tried to retain the cables with real battery and it did not work). - The charger plugged in and it's ready to be used. - I hold both cables (made sure about the negative to negative and positive to positive) - I just touched the battery with both cables, negative and positive (I heared a sound). - I removed everything and pulged in the type C cable into the remote and connected it to USB port in my desktop PC. - And it just worked and started to charge normally. Special thanks to the owner of this educative video, you really saved my spotlight remote from being thrown into the trash!!!!

Great video, and it actually worked! Brought my device back to life. I soldered two needles onto the end of short wires attached to a standard 9V battery. I connected the USB-C to an external battery power pack. The needles then easily penetrated the goo over the battery terminals, and it required between 30 - 60 seconds charging before coming to life. I am currently leaving it to charge overnight, but it seems to be working fine now.

Thank you maestro! With the same slogan "nothing to lose" like many companions here, I have reanimated my Spotlight after watching this tutorial! Actually, I used 2 old AAA batteries (Energizer) with 2,55V and charged it just for around 15 seconds. Then the spotlight vibrated, the white LED start blinking and I disconneted it from the AAA batteries. Yet, the battery of the Spotlight had 3.9V according to my multimeter. Now it works fine after regular charging.

Same problem, post pandemic dead device. I fixed it with this solution but modified it so I didn't have to solder. I basically had to make little 'jumper cables' like you'd use on your car. I used a camera Li-ion battery, 3.7V because it has the two exposed connectors. I took the back off as in the video and made a note on the remote of the positive and negative. I took a paperclip and bent it to a sort of u-shape (made two of these). I added "handles" with grey duct tape in the middle of them as to not conduct energy when I held them. I positioned the batter near the remote for stability with the +/+ lined up and the -/- lined up. With my 'handles' I aligned each paperclip. One connected the two + nodes and the other connected the two - nodes, then held it there a couple of minutes. It lit up and buzzed. I took off my little "jumper cables" and plugged the charging cable. It's now charging and I think it will be all fixed. Thanks for the video!!!!

Thank you, this done the trick for me! I had to peel away two layers of protective kapton tape before being able to access the terminals. So what I done then was I used a jumper wire (think breadboard), and another small 3.7v battery that was even smaller (250mAh) - so the surge charging wouldn't be too high. You don't need to charge over night, just enough for the voltage reading t o be above the minimum cutoff voltage that the charger chip looks for - that's why your usb-c isn't charging, and you're directly charging the battery.

@@kevinjackson5191 Sorry about that. Can you try to activate the remote when the charger is connected through the wires? At that stage the charger becomes the source replacing the battery, so even if the battery were dead, the remote could start working. Obviously this does not solve the whole problem yet, but would be some step forward. As to your previous questions, the charger should be one that can handle lithium batteries and a dumb one could be better than intelligent in the face of your difficulties. As to soldering vs touching, the soldering should be safer since the spacing between the battery terminals is narrow and the holding by hand might not be steady enough for the narrow spacing. Andre Carlos Silva in another comment said that it 5 seconds were sufficient.

I'm not good with electricity, and things like this. Did anyone else video themselves doing this full project from start to finish. I am having the exact same problem... I don't have a soldering gun or a AA battery charger. Thanks!

i did use another charged Li-Ion battery (type 18650) and just "jump started" the dead battery of the Spotlight without soldering. I briefly touched/connected plus to plus and minus to mines of the batteries for a few seconds to add some charge. Then I plugged in the regular type-c charger. But be carefull to just touch the right electrodes, dont shor the device. But I guess soldering would be the better or correct way to do this as it allows to securely connect another voltage supply or voltage meters etc.

Hi I have the same problem. I didn't use my Spotlight for a while. Currently, there is no blinking light in the indicator even though I already connect to the laptop. Is there anyone that can help me? There is no service center in my country I already connect my Anker Power Bank to the Spotlight but it still no response

I had this exact problem. Tried charging with the USB yesterday, tried multiple chargers, light was flashing and then on continuously. No response at all though, no vibration indication for 'on'. So today I got geared up to try this method and while poking the lid I inadvertently pressed the button, causing it to switch on, unlike yesterday. It still didn't seem to work so I charged for 5 minutes more and tried it again. No success. In desperation I decided to plug in the usb receiver and it came to life. Charged a bit more, and meanwhile removed the Bluetooth pairing and logitech app. Reinstalled, paired and now all is working again. Fully charged it says. So I think the apparently unsuccessful trickle charge of yesterday was just enough to get it to wake up again (24 h later). Using the usb receiver caused it to reboot or something. Then fresh Bluetooth pairing and app.

I am not able to reproduce it. Could you please provide more details about how you attached the wires, which is + and -, etc?

This is from 2:54 on. The battery terminal close to the center of the remote is negative and that close to the edge of the remote is positive. Does that help?

@@2ai You’re right, apologies. Anyhow I was doing that right. However, how do you attach the wires to both ends? I’ve been “charging” it overnight and it doesn’t work. I attach them with a bit of scotch tape, and I don’t hear any sound or vibration. Any other details I may be missing?

@@santiagocanellasroman1980 Instead to a charger, you may connect the wires from the internal battery to an external lithium battery in parallel. I.e., connect minus to minus and plus to plus. It would be better for the external battery to have a low capacity, rather than high, and to be partially discharged, rather than full. Keep these connected for 10-15 and minutes, then disconnect and try connecting the remote to a USB cable and check whether it charges. If it does not, try another 10-15 minutes. Mildly warm batteries are OK. If anything starts heating up seriously, disconnect everything.

Can I use normal iPhone charger for external charging
@2ai
@2ai 2 жыл бұрын
I do not think so. A typical phone charger will try to deliver slightly over 5V at its terminals, a bit too high for a lithium battery that normally charges at up to 4.2V.

@@user-vh7bj4td5y I am not sure that is enough. If you connected a lithium battery in parallel to the one already there and the unit worked, without a USB connection, then it would mean that you need to replace the battery.
