Glad to see you happily tuning and wrenching on the Vair! As you're learning tuning and balancing the carbs is crucial. Another thing that will cause the cars to run rough or stall, can be traced to vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks seem to have a more negative effect on PG ones, but my Corsa wasn't running right, and part of it was vacuum leaks and the timing. Keep up the good work!

Good job. Normally I put a dab of anti-seize at bottom of the spark plug threads so that it coats the threads as you install it.

Now that I think of it, that makes much more sense. Not sure why I did it the other way.

If I try to get mine to idle at less than 1050rpm it chokes out and dies.

We never used a timing light! Cars always ran better when we timed them by ear. If they pinged afterwards we simply retarded it a bit!

Sounds great ! Your persistence paid off , Are You going to put on your lower shroud doors ? That will affect how long it takes for your engine to warm up, During hot weather your engine will run hot do to much heat coming back in off the exhaust manifolds. Again great job on synchronizing the carbs thanks for the update & the video.

I do plan on putting all the lower shrouds back on. Old ones were too beat up to reuse so I've had them off for now. I appreciate the advice and your comment! :)

Always check the rubber vacuumed line connectors under the carbs first,

That balancer is for 80 hp engines. I put a little dot of white paint in the notch on the balancer so it really showed up quite well :)

One tip. I have a 66 Impala and 64 Corvair. I bought the replica 60’s manuals as well. But they don’t account for modern gas. Gas in the 60’s burnt way faster. Timing is off as far as those manuals are concerned. I add 10• advance to the impala and it never ran better.

yep, I add advance to my '64 Corvair and it runs much better on 93 gas. I got the electronic distributor from California Corvairs, so I was able to limit the total mechanical advance and change the springs as well so that I'm still at 36* total. I also don't run the vacuum advance, so increasing my initial timing helps it not feel like a dog when you first hit the gas (where ported vacuum will give you that timing boost).

I am having a similar problem, but as I drive, the car shakes a bit, but only when cruising, and the right carburator has no airflow but good compression. Any suggestions? I've tried all I could..

What if you were to switch the left and right carbs? That would let you know if it's the carb or the cylinder bank. My guess is it's some stupid little thing in the carb. I have the same problem and it turns out the guy who rebuilt it put in a bigger brass needle (looks like an obelisk) in the hole that allows for the accelerator pump to discharge gas...I'll throw it on tomorrow - fingers crossed

I fought stumbling, backfiring and idle issues for a month. Rebuilt carbs, installed electronic ignition and nothing worked. The problem turned out to be....centrifugal advance + vacuum advance + 4 degrees was too much timing on de-acceleration, causing mis-fires. Everything was set to original specs. Currently the vacuum line is plugged to stop the vacuum advance and it runs good. If anyone can explain why i had too much vacuum advance i sure would like to hear about it. remember everything was stock.

I did the exact same thing. I have dual bluetooth AFR gauges to monitor each bank of cylinders...timing was too high at easy cruising and deceleration, causing lean misfires. Plug the VA and bump up my initial timing a bit, and it has never ran better. I was getting 50-52* total timing with the VA connected and at easy cruise speeds. Now I'm at 20* initial and 36* all-in if I step on it and get to 3k+ rpms...that's my max, and I have had zero issues with lean misfires since.

@@benbencorvair9071 cool man, I just got this thing a couple days ago. I’m going to redo the interior and then rebuild the motor and my intentions are to sell it so I can finish off my list of things to get for my drums. I had no idea that this motor had duel carbs. Wow! This is going to be fun. A pancake motor. This is my first Corvair.

The tool I place on top of the carburetors is a uni-syn tool. Must have to make sure both carbs are synchronized and pulling equal vacuum.
