A manual would have told you that. BTW...it's called sumping (when the crankcase fills with oil after sitting for awhile). All the older big twins do it, and some Sportsters too, and it's an easy fix. It's the check ball and oil screen in the oil pump. There's a big screw right on top of the oil pump where you can access it. A piece of grit or something got in there and that's what causes the sumping. My Shovel quit doing the sumping thing the first time I cleaned the check ball screen. Also keep that breather hose AWAY from the rear tire, for obvious reasons. A well known exhaust trick is to double up the exhaust gaskets and use blue loctite on the single bolt. The single bolt system sucks and they like to loosen up after a bit. Once it warms up that oil pressure will drop off to nothing, which is normal because they run on volume, not pressure. Get that front end figured out and RIDE THAT SUCKER!

I know your an old head like me sometimes watching this stuff is painful. Only a shovel owner would know the pain of single bolt exhaust flanges.
@josephtizol96953 жыл бұрын
@@stevem5139 exactly my thought. That rear exhaust port is probably stripped out that’s why he gummed it all up with the silicone. Definitely poor design with the single bolt I’m putting S&S heads on my shovel right now and looking forward to not tightening my pipes every time I leave the house

I use the woven evolution exhaust gaskets on my 78 shovelhead flh, you have to take your time and stretch them around the exhaust, but I have not had a exhaust leak since I put them on 10 years ago. And I also had a serious sumping problem with mine, I removed the check ball and spring in the oil pump and cleaned it out with a bore mop from my gun cleaning kit, then put old check ball back in an used a Teflon punch and brass hammer to lightly tap and seat the check ball, ( removed it with a thin magnet) put in the new check ball and spring, oil sumping problem went away. I do this every other oil change.

I ran my breather hose up to a fitting I made in the top of the central vertical frame tube and fitted a filter to the bottom of that tube and a screw cap on the opening of the bottom of the tube that catches all the oil from the breather turning the tube into an oil catch can and you just unscrew the bottom cap to drain the oil off. It works real well and solves the messy breather problems.

Had a shovelhead come in the shop smoking like that one, whoever's built it didn't understand oiling of a shove at all. First of all breather plug blocked thought that would be the end of it. Nope still smoking like a train compression test was 110 each cylinder. Leak down test all good, cylinders look good with bore scope? So I said maybe oil pump not drilled for newer style pump nope, then maybe after market lifter blocks clogged or partially clogged, Nope, pulled front head off and at least 1.5 quarts of oil drained out. Long story short, somebody build a stroke and did not machine the case for oil returns from top end.

Crankcase breather. The downward motion of the pistons builds up pressure in the crankcase, and it's gotta have somewhere to go. If excess oil was building up in the crankcase, the check ball valve spring on the oil pump is probably weak. The previous owner probably siliconed everything because oil was probably seeping or squirting from every orifice.

Hugh Jorden is right but also the breather hose was to run into the air cleaner but if the bike wet-sump it would spit the oil into the air cleaner so everybody just cut the hose, you can buy a filter for it and run the hose so it sweeps up higher and that stops the puddle of oil on the ground when it wet sumps.

How do I fix it from dumping? Where do the hoses and screw go? I put a 5 speed transmission in. It came back sumping..it wasn't befor
@KingpinGarage11 ай бұрын
One of the main factors for the oil dumping on a bottom breathing motors is the height of the breather hose. If it loops up high and then comes back down there’s less of a chance of it shooting tons of oil out. There are tons of other methods to not have it spray oil out. We’ve seen breathers plumbed right into the oil bag with a special breathing cap.
