Hi all, I'm a big fan of the smaller Sony Walkman models, but they are quite difficult to try and fix. From 1984 (36 years ago!) this WM-F15 really packs a lot in to a small form-factor and looks great, but I encounter a rubber belt which has turned to Goo, amongst other things! Can I put them right?

Hello. What is written in [01:04] is written in Japanese as "kazu(かず)". Presumably, this is a person's name, a man's name. Also, there is a Japanese TV channel number written on the FM band. This may be a Walkman for the Japanese market. Thanks for the great repair video. I'm Japanese, so I translated this text with Deepl.

Man, getting into walkmans is a mine field. So far I have bought 6 of them;. None are working, 4 of them I can probably salvage. 3 of them will likely play tapes properly once repaired.. And they just ain't that cheap any more, even broken ones.

Got one just like this that was my dad's, I was really into it as a kid so I have a lot of love for it. sadly it now has many of the same issues, I wish there was a way to fix that clicking. He helped me change the belt back in the day, it was my first time working on electronics!

I found it very daunting to work on compared to the larger models! I'm so impressed with what Sony were able to engineer with this one.

nice! love walkmans with windows to see the cassette but i think the metal bodies were nicer than the plastic ones. so like the wm-20 etc.

i modded my wm-f15 to have a titanium base and it is very nice but i think the reason why it is plastic and not metal is because the metal fucks with the AM/FM antenna

@@monkeysyndicate Very vibrant! Also be careful with the plastics as my red one seems to be rather thin and brittle. I don't know why they are so thin compared to the grey and black colours

I just picked one up. What a mess this tiny belt made. Sadly my generic belts are too thick so ive special ordered one

Did you try putting a head demagnetizer cartridge into the player? It might help with high-end treble?

I think those thin nylon gears wrapped around the spindle are starting to become a much more common problem like the DD line. I have a WM-10 which cosmetically speaking looks like its been through war, yet it works fine. But when i got a new belt and all, the gear cracked, making the thing completely useless. I hope someone or a group manages to make new ones, cuz these WM-10 variants are gonna start kicking the bucket real soon :(

Hey, I think you can source replacements (machined from metal) and some people offer repair services but either option is expensive!
@dgillies5420
@dgillies5420 2 жыл бұрын
I think that in theory you should be able to give the gear to a high-end watch maker or something and they should be able to make a metal one on their mini-lathe. But it would be quite expensive and because of the change in mass who knows if it will spin at the correct speed?

the sony f20 can hold a cassette if you stretch it open at least that how other youtubers that own similar have gotten the cassette inside no problem. the ones with the radio have more wires and stuff inside so they're a bit finnicky to fix.

I've seen some of these where the heads themselves have adjustments for the azimuth..that could have something to do with your lack of treble.
@monkeysyndicate
@monkeysyndicate 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I adjusted the azimuth and it made it a little better, but I guess the head is just a little worn. The radio sounds superb!

WF doesn't sound too bad. You should always test with a piano song for wf. I have two but they're not getting any power. Know why?

Hi I just want to add on to low treble output, maybe all you need to do is to adjust the azimuth of the tape head :).

Can someone hear the clicking from a Distance?
@monkeysyndicate
@monkeysyndicate 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, not from a distance, as the casing reduces the noise a little. You have to be quite close to hear it :)

Do you think a novice would be able to replace this belt?
@monkeysyndicate
@monkeysyndicate 3 жыл бұрын
I'd maybe practise on a larger player if you have one first. Nothing is too bad, but the cleanup of the old belt is quite tricky.

@maddmaxxslhc
@maddmaxxslhc 2 жыл бұрын
@@thecaptain8174 I'd say follow his advice. It's really not too hard. If you have a cheaper walkman to work on try that first. But this model wasn't too bad. The degraded belt was the hardest part. Just cleaning it was tedious

Man when polishing the silver pulley it looks like a woman's head of hair is laying atop the pulley and your goal, should you choose to accept it, is to achieve a mirror shine without breaking a single thread of hair!
