Would putting a little loctite on the bar stud before putting it back in help? Or would it just lead to a bigger issue?

@@cajunred6804 It probably wouldn't hurt anything but I'm not sure it would do anything either. Loctite generally works best where both threaded areas are metal and it probably wouldn't do much in terms of screwing a metal stud into plastic threads.

Stihl makes an oversized bar stud for use when case threads are stripped. The case part is larger, but the bar part is the same as before, so the stock nut goes back on. I have used these successfully when the case threads are too far gone to use.

I'm not a huge fan of Loctite...but I'd have used some on this repair. Don, you SHOULD check out the LANG Tools 42pc Metric/SAE thread repair set. Its great for restoring messed up threads, better than using a die. Don't buy a generic set, get the USA made original from Lang. I bet U would use it almost daily. Great video.

I replied with a similar comment about the thread repair kit. It realigns the threads rather than cutting them. It doesn’t work in every instance, but when it does, it works well.

Nice. Same thing happened to me last summer with a new saw, no cross thread though. Lock tight to the rescue. But i checked and still will warranty it if something else was wrong. 😊. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Doesn't work well. The reason the stud came out is because the threads were damaged, now that the threads are repaired it won't come out.

Awesome video, Don - I like your instruction videos whether it's removing a broken bolt or like this video. But can I ask you why you didn't use Locktite on the stud inside the housing (I hope you understand what I mean) - so it would sit much tighter and not come out with the nut. The threads were perfectly good in the case and were not the problem. Loctite doesn't work that well in plastic.

Use two nuts to get the stud back in and tight. You can back off the inner nut

I bought a Lang thread repair kit for damaged threads. If the threads aren’t damaged much this realigns the threads rather than doing any cutting. It doesn’t always work though and I sometimes have to grab the regular tap/die set.

When first removed from the case it looked like there was a lot of oil on the part of the stud that came out of the case. Wondering if it might have been worth hitting the hole and stud with carb/brake cleaner before replacing the stud?

If it was my saw I would replace both studs and nuts as you are always adjusting the chain and would hate to damage the engine.

when i need to accurately start a tap , i sometimes chuck a tap in drill press and turn chuck by hand till it starts (NEVER start the drill press) . you can also chuck a stud , and lay die on d p table , to accurately start the die . a little awkward , but it sometimes comes in handy .

I did this repair last year and used Gorilla Glue to hold the stud in place.

Cost of new stud compared to the cost of thread die, die handle and reamer, might be a reasonable option to repair the saw.

I am not sure it really makes a lot of difference, but we use "te-threading" dies/taps or what some call chasing dies/taps to correct damaged threads and thread cutting dies/taps if making new threads in unthreaded material. I "think" maybe tess metal is lost is chasing the threads with the re-threading type. Have you noticed that or not?

I think if it were me working on someone else chainsaw I'd put new studs in there. Good chance the thing will be back when the owner cross threads them again.

Never knew there was a tool to round the end of bolt . Nice save. Tell my guys not to over tighten these. Everyone thinks you have to crank them on super tight .Thats why they have 2 . I put some red loc tite on the ones I’ve done ( case side ) . Not sure if it made a difference but problem never returned .

I wish I knew the the thread count back in the day after I lost the bar but on a sthii chain saw back in the day we went to home Depot trying to find a nut that would fit on the stud but it was not happing trying to find the proper one

When using dies, regardless of whether they are cutting or chasing, have the side that has the size printed on it towards the stud. If you look close there is a distinct difference in the lead(taper) on the first couple threads to help get started.

Not to be "that guy" but dies are for cutting threads--they remove metal. A thread chaser is for repairing threads--straightening them while removing little or no metal. Removing metal results in weaker/sloppy threads. Lang/Kastar makes a great "thread restorer" set. It gets rebranded by all the tool trucks and was even sold by Sears/Craftsman at one time.

Why not tap the messed up nut, too? You had a spare in stock, but would tapping the nut work, too? Not that a new nut is expensive, but it would save a trip to the small engine repair shop and back home, and it would be much faster.

The threads in the nut would have been very thin, I didn't want to chance it on a customer's saw.

Studs are cheap, I would have replaced both to prevent future problems.

Get a better saw, pay $1200 or $1500 for a saw and you will take better care of it. Sprocket was also warn and you can see he has thrown the chain a few times.

I've found the price of a saw doesn't always mean much. There's just some people out there that could break an anvil without even trying.

@@danclas5983 only if they didn’t pay for it. Never lend them tools. My neighbor cut a 1/2 inch grove into a granite rock with a $100 saw without knowing it..
