In this video I will show you how to paint new plaster using a mist coat of emulsion paint. I will include preperation of the new plaster, how to mix your own mist coat of paint to save money, what paint to avoid and finally how to apply your mist coat.
The first step is wall preparation which will involve sanding and maybe filling, you should pay close attention to the edges of the new plaster to ensure you get a crisp line between the new plaster and the old plaster. As new plaster is delicate you should use a minimum of 180 grit sandpaper.
You can buy a special bare plaster paint but there really is no need and I feel it is a waste of money when you can make your own using emulsion you already have. To make your mist coat you need to use standard matt emulsion, do not be tempted to use endurance paint, silk paint, vinyl paint or anything else as this will not work. Follow the instructions on your matt emulsion for watering down and this should give you good results.
Apply the mist coat of paint the same as you would for normal painting taking care to cover the corners. If you have used filler in the walls the mist coat will not be absorbed into that area but this doesn’t matter as the final coats of emulsion will key to this. Once the mist coat has dried you may end up with a patchy appearance but this is usual so do not feel the need to give it another coat as it is not needed. You can then proceed to give the wall the wall the final coats of the paint of your choice!
