Thanks for this! I just did my first LVT floor. It was trucore arctic oak. Cork backing, looks like wood. After watching a bunch of how-to's I ended up using an 18 tpi metal blade 'dewalt' in a jigsaw. Worked great for both width and length as well as corners and around the flange, very smooth. This was a bathroom so I glued it down per company recommendations as i am going to put the vanity and the toilet on top.

Wow! What a helpful video. I'm about to do my first DIY laminate flooring project of 200 sf. My big question certainly was how to do the cuts. After watching this, I'm confident I can do it. I have an oscillating tool, so I think I'm getting a jigsaw. I don't want to cheap out on it because that's often a mistake. I'll look for a reasonably priced mid-range jigsaw. Thanks!

For short cuts I made a fixture of two 1x4s sandwiched together with spacers, leaving a slot just wide enough to slip the scored end of a plank into. I clamp it to a workbench and slip the piece to be cut with the score at the edge of the opening. It holds the short side while I get push down on the longer end of the board and I can make perfect 1” cuts.

No problem on the mistake! I have seen so many expert craftspeople make exactly the same kind of mistakes with measurements. Watched one of the best contractors in San Francisco ruin a $20+k trussed beam when he measured wrong. Thanks for showing it! Reinforces the measure twice, cut once rule. Just now my wife and I are trying to figure out how to match up our cut with the twists and turns of a door inset from the wall and the odd shaped molding around it.

YOU CAN DO THIS! To anyone reading this is a principal I live by today. Your mistakes end up being your best work why? Because you become creative to fix the mistake and then you have an original work of art! I make a lot of my own clothes one of my coworkers told me this principle years ago and it literally applies to everything! Whether you tell yourself you CAN Or you can’t, either way you’re RIGHT! Reframe the way you see your mistakes they are a blessing go for it go create a masterpiece!

Until I saw the mistake you left in the video. All lights turned on, and I knew exactly how to measure and cut. Great tips and tricks video. I had already planned on using the LifeProof vinyl planking for my project and have already watched other tips and tricks videos for installation. One additional tip for using the multi tool for cutting under door jambs. Make sure you apply a thin layer of painter's tape or masking tape on top of the vinyl plank where the multi tool comes into contact with the plank so as to not mar the top surface of the plank as you're cutting into the door jamb.
@mayeri3083
@mayeri3083 3 жыл бұрын
Good point, but you should be cutting all the door jambs before you install the vinyl flooring. you don't want to really be cutting and making a mess where you going to be laying the flooring. I prepped the room first, by vacuuming and then laying the flooring without having to vacuum every 5 seconds, even though I did vacuum here and there. When it came to scoring the board's I would snap them in the room, but anytime I used a power tool it took it out to another room. As is I found three-four times little pieces of vinyl got stuck in between which caused the vinyl not to snap in smoothly. Thanks to fix that build that! I knew to look out for that.

You do great work I just wanted to let you know when you have small cuts with the razor knife turn it over to where the village finish side is up you put your framing square half side up and you put your cut edge on top of that and pop it with your fist Very little pressure is needed but it makes a great snap. That’s how I snap every cut the only time I use a saw is when you’re making linear cuts on your board. My worker use the technique I used and he snapped 3/4 of an inch off the butt cut. I was so impressed but he used that technique that I suggested.

What a great morning surprise! Another great video of yours! Watched it from the very beginning to the very end. Loved every part of it. You even got me to laugh when you were playing around with your short cut vinyl plank! (Which you erred on.) After watching both of your install videos of your vinyl plank flooring, you got me to install my very own vinyl plank flooring in My den. Came out really beautiful! And just about all the tips and tricks you learn as your start to install the flooring. Starting with taking the measurements of the room and determining how much ,how many boxes of vinyl plank flooring you need, +10%. As well exactly where you will start a whole plank and where not. As well I found it really important to measure from one side of the room to the other side of the room like you mentioned in the video to make sure not to have a very skinny row at the very end.(referring to the front of the room and the end of the room the last row.) I made the same silly mistake where I measured from the wrong side and then forgot to turn around the plank to make the cut and cut on the wrong side. The good thing about that mistake, is you can use it for the other side of the room to start the row. Without a vinyl plank floor cutter, I found the easiest method was to score the plank multiple times. How did I avoid going off my original scoring line? I tried to score a deep score the very first time which would enable me to follow in the same groove the second and third time. After 3-4 scores it snapped really clean and sharp, while I found if I scored only once it was a very messy snap. I found after installing 1-2 rows that a jigsaw was a must. There was no way I was cutting around the corners without a jigsaw. I managed to dull a metal blade and a wooden blade. The vinyl is some tough flooring against those blades. In regards to cutting the rubber on the bottom which seemed to stay connected after scoring the planks or using a vinyl cutter, the easiest method I found was bending the planks together towards each other, the rubber backing came apart very easy. As well I realized the room would not look the same by putting a quarter inch round molding. So I must say you got me to buy the trim removal tool for $30 and boy did it work. Saved me all that time from cutting quarter inch round moldings. Pulled out all the nails from the back side which i see you didn't mention in the video. Don't try pulling out the nails from the front end or hammering it out, it will take you forever and make many holes on the front end of the molding, which will require you to put wood filler in each and every hole. Easiest way is to take a plier and pull each and every nail out from the back, grab twist and pull. Or use a tool to snap every nail in the back without pulling it out entirely. As well I had to remove the old caulk. But the install was so rewarding just nailing the trims back on. Now the only thing left to do, is install the transition slides. Which I have no clue what to do. The kitchen has tiles which is about 1-1 ½ inches taller then the new vinyl flooring that I just laid in the den. And then there is a glass porch door going out to the deck which has a plastic/metal track raised up two inches or so. So it seems like I'm going to need some type of transition slide going from The Gap between the flooring and the door. What would you recommend? Your videos were really amazing gave me the strength and ability to lay my own flooring. At first I'm like this is not happening. But after buying 24 boxes from Costco and bringing it to the room I'm like I'm doing it! Having someone help you with this install was a great help! Had my brother. Made it much easier. I did the ends, he did the beginning of the row. He was able to tell me which planks he can use and which planks he could not use, and I shall use a new plank instead to give him scrap's to start the next row. Overall the flooring is not that hard to put down, but the cutouts makes it a bit tricky. Too bad I can't upload some pics of the flooring, it came out beautiful. Or maybe I can attach a link.. postimg.cc/xX3Xkjkv postimg.cc/cvSK4tJ1

@@Fixthisbuildthat Thanks! What would you recommend for the transition slides for that door and the floor with a 1-2inch height difference?

Well done video. Only tip I would add- whenever you have a regular space need on a project, get a scrap spacer. If I want 1/4 inch gap, I keep a 1/4 inch plywood scrap handy and insert it while taking any measurement.

I use a paint stick on edge as it's 1/4 inch. And I lean it against the wall as I install the plank too.

Groovy vid. I personally use my drop saw if I have vinyl plank or hybrid jobs. I broke my guillotine, so I just got used to the mitre saw with the correct blade. You do need good extraction however, it does get messy.

I love your vids. Using them to DIY some projects and watching these are making me more confident in doing so. But I am confused on why flipping the boards are necessary…very confused

Do you caulk your baseboards to the flooring? As well is one allowed to put a closet rack which would be drilled into the vinyl flooring? Would that be okay being that the flooring needs an expansion gap?
