184 lbs. division. Sanderson represented Iowa State University. Cormier represented Oklahoma State University. Both went to the olympics. Cormier made a fatal mistake near the end of the match, guaranteeing his loss. He posed among the biggest threats to Cael Sanderson, considered the greatest American amateur wrestler in recent history, together with John Smith and Dan Gable.

Rando S Maybe. Historically Greco-Roman does better in mma. Partly because they stand more erect in there wrestling careers. Now catch wrestling is even more effective than folk style
@camgan1
@camgan1 7 жыл бұрын
That's simply false. As an example, compare Randy Couture, a Greco-Roman wrestler, with Daniel Cormier or Jon Jones, freestyle/folkstyle wrestlers. Couture (a UFC legend and one of my favorite old school UFC fighters by the way) has more than 5 times the losses of Cormier and Jones combined. Couture's record was 19-11 whereas Jones and Cormier have a combined record of 40-2.

Jon Jones is trained in both freestyle and greco. He was a junior regional greco champ. Almost all his ufc takedowns are from the clinch, i.e. greco. Greco certainly does better in the ufc. There's very few greco wrestlers in the ufc and they're always effective. Freestyle, on the other hand, yeah there's successful freestyle wrestlers, but half the ufc come from freestyle and many of those are mediocre fighters.

Anyone care to educate me a little on how points are scored in wrestling? I'm naive to the sport of wrestling but through MMA I've developed tons of respect towards fighters that have come up from a heavy wrestling background. These guys who wrestled for a long time growing up eventually mold into some of the most toughest athletes both physically and mentally.

Go from being controlled on the ground to standing up 1 point, go from standing to controlling someone 2 points, go from being controlled to controlling someone 2 points, get 1 of someones should blades on the mat ref starts counting off backpoints awarding them to the dominant party, get 2 shoulder blades, pin match is over, also in college you get rewarded for controlling longer, x amount of minutes = x amount of points. I hope you educated yourself from 7 months ago, but for anyone who has similar questions like you did I'm just supplying the answer.

Having wrestled a couple of years in high school, the respect I have for these wrestlers is immense. What I really like about Sanderson is that he doesn't looked like he was chiseled from a rock. I am speaking in relative terms because he looks like Adonis compared to 95% of people. However, at those weight, a lot of these wrestlers are incredibly strong and use that as their main weapon. Cael is 90% technique when it comes to his wrestling. He's far from weak but he out-wrestles his opponents not out-muscling them. On a side note, one must feel terrible for Cormier. Collegiate wise, this was the last match Cael was somewhat challenged in. In his senior year, he just dominated the competition.

Yeah, Cael is amazing, because he is super quick transitioning from one move to another that you don’t even notice it. You see a lot of guys flash their speed with singles or doubles, but he flashes it when he moves from a tie up to an ankle pick. Or when he goes for a pick and he senses the balance has changed, he’ll switch to a single. And he’s switching positions so fast, that he just seems to get the takedown right away without as much wrestling as you see others have.

Cael has one of the best ankle picks of all because it is very low risk and high reward. He drops down and does an excellent job keeping his shoulders square and driving into his opponent. He uses his body and does not reach at all. It is awesome.

Kallen LREN so true. That's what I always loved about Cael's technique and ankle pick. It required less energy than a full shot and also is way easier to bail out of if it's not there. But if it is, boom 2 points

It's crazy how one closed door just opens another one. Cormier lost this match but ended up becoming the greatest mixed martial artist of all time; two division champion of light heavyweight and heavyweight undefeated. Reminds me of how failure can sometimes be a good thing.

At 7:31, he has a collar tie, jerks a couple times on the head to get DC to adjust his balance, and then when DC has his balance just a little too far over his foot, Cael drives that ankle pick. That is vintage Cael.

Cormier was still down by a point with less than 40 seconds left in the third period, so he let Sanderson get an escape in hopes of scoring another takedown, thus throwing the match into overtime. The only other option he had was to score back points or get a pin, which I guess he didn't believe would happen.
