I like how when the veteran tells John he once knew a guy that was tall with a moody face, John immediately narrows it down to Arthur. Given how many NPCs, people in general who would fit that description, John must be damn near psychic.

or, get this, john isn't an actual person he is a character in a game so he doesnt actually think. but, by that point John already ran into Micky in Valentine and John probably seen Joe in Rhodes when the gang was doing gang activities for the Grays and Braithewaites, connecting a moody faced guy Joe talks about to being Arthur as the guy Joe is talking about isn't really that much of a stretch imo.

Eh. That's true. But war vet or no, you can tell the guy lived a hard life and fell upon a misfortune at some point what clipped off his arm, and the man is so unstable that for all we know he actually IS a veteran, but THINKS he's a fraud. PTSD and survivor's guilt can wreak all kinds of havoc on a man's mind. So yeah. I don't know whether to believe that he's a disturbed old soldier or take him at face value when he says he's just a bum. One way or the other, what I DO see him as, is a remnant of the Civil War's legacy. I'm a history buff. One of my favorite things to do is read my Osprey books. I live out in West Virginia where we've got a LOT of old battlefields. My dad likes to go metal detecting and has collected entire BUCKETS of bullets, belt buckles, butt plates, stirrups, buttons, shrapnel and other battlefield debris. Even found some of those three ring bullets that we're pretty sure was used by Mosby's guys.

There is a random camp encounter that may pertain to this gentleman: In the Clemens Point Camp you may watch Tilly talking to, I believe, Karen, and tell her, that close to Rhodes she met a very old woman, whom she wanted to rob, but could not bring herself to do it, 'cause the woman told her, that she had a son who lost a leg in the War and they were both struggling just to barely get by. So if this guy is in his 60s and his mother in her 80s there may be a connection between those two events.

@@Gunxify, well… not really. Of course that was a large factor, but considering gravity exists, and canonshot was designed to hit the ground, bounce and it would often go similar to a bowling ball through legs of men. Musket shot, while it might hit you or your comrade in the chest or stomach, would then go down (as they were designed to smash through lines of men, not bounce around like modern weapons) the chances of that round hitting at least one man somewhere on either of his legs was quite higher. I meant legs especially over other limbs. So while it was a higher chance that your limbs would be amputated and you might die from it, there’s an even higher chance your legs are to be amputated over your arms.

Some soldiers simply thought they were protecting their homes and were the victims of their own rotten slaveholding government. well, in real life, the US Civil War only happened because a few states wanted to separate as their own sovereign nation. It had absolutely nothing to do with slavery, which btw, the North benefitted from tenfold compared to the South. Abolishing slavery was just a condition brought forth in order to conclude the war "peacefully". Really, it was just half the country forcing the other half to remain in an abusive relationship.
@cjmurphy7967
@cjmurphy7967 5 ай бұрын
@jcage1022 No offense, but as someone currently getting a college degree in history. I can tell you that's total bs. The civil war was indeed about states' rights, that being a states rights to hold slaves. Infact slavery was mentioned as the primary reason in the document of succession, I suggest you give it a read. Sorry, bro, it was about slavery. Not everyone who was a confederate may have fought for the reason, but it doesn't change the fact that it was about slavery.

Well, he had two strands in the sleeve braid, spaced more widely apart than would have really been the case, so he would have been a captain. The buttons on the tunic are arranged in a single row, which indicates that he was a junior officer, not a field officer, again suggesting an officer rank below that of major. The red facings indicate that he was an artillery officer. The rank could ordinarily be confirmed by the insignia on his collar, which Butler wears open and turned down, so that it cannot be seen. The appropriate collar insignia would be three horizontal gold bars, placed one above the other for a captain. The historical impression that Butler most closely presents is that of a captain in the artillery, who was wounded (possibly at the Battle of Shiloh) and mustered out in mid to late 1862. The reason that I say 1862 is that this was the year in which a general order was relayed to the troops that forbade the wearing of sleeve braid on uniforms in the field. The red kepi that he is wearing was also changed out in 1862. That is not to discount the probability that some Rockstar developer might have simply pulled a reasonably good looking uniform out of some cocktail table book and intended that Butler be understood to be a survivor of the Battle of Scarlet Meadows.

Most of the soldiers and even officers of the confederacy didn’t own slaves. Hardly any slave owners fought in the war due to them being in the 1% elite upper class. Despite what many people may think, most all southerners weren’t fighting to keep slavery going and if you were to have told either side that they were fighting for slavery they would’ve thrown down their guns and walked home. In the southerners mind they were fighting for there independence. While Northerners believed they were fighting to keep the country whole.

@@Skeeter_Sociation While the Civil War wasn't explicitly about slavery, the Confederacy was fighting for their self proclaimed "rights." And one of those "rights" included the right to own a human being and treat them like property. This was something that the vast majority of Confederate soldiers were likely aware of, and considering they were willing to die for their cause I think it's safe to assume they were completely onboard with the idea of slavery and were willing to fight to keep it going, even if that wasn't the only thing they were fighting for.

People should watch "Gone with the Wind" It depicts the civil war south. Admittedly in typical Early 20th century Rose colored racist fashion. "Roots" will show you why slavery is dumb, evil and impractical. It also has one of my favorite scenes in it, I think. Cecily Tyson plays an old former slave asked to give a cup of water to her former mistress. She spits in the water and hands it over. Such a good actress you can see her complete contempt. "Centennial" Another long epic from '70s TV gives a nice flavor of the old frontier west.

@@valtontony826 You’re justifying people having no rights and being forced to do brutal work for nothing more than meager food and a crowded shack they could live in. @@moaninglisa7153no. That's never told anyone where it was. They didn't even know how much was in there. He had nearly $50,000 (the chest he keeps near camp during the regular game). More than enough to get them out of the country. And that wasn't even counting the Blackwater money which was nearly 150,000. But of course trapped in blackwater. He didn't want anyone to know where the money was or how much was in there because his paranoia of being betrayed, but more importantly he never wanted the gang to escape and go hide away somewhere to live peaceful lives. He wanted to use each and every last one of them to rebel against the government and fulfill his anarchistic fantasies and leave him as a famous and infamous outlaw history books one day. He wanted to live like an American King, and ruled his gang like a cult leader.

Joe Butler probably came from the upper class of the South judging by the fact he’s an artillery man (if you were wealthy you went into either the cavalry or artillery). As to if he or his family owned any slaves, it’s up in the air. By the 1860’s, really old established money tended to own less slaves if any at all. The plantation game was risky, it’s why you saw a lot of high ranking army guys coming from the South, they wanted a steady well paying gig that was in no way tied to the land that they owned. The way a lot of plantation owners played it was you run the farm until your family is exceedingly wealthy and then you buy a bank, or a cotton brokerage.
