In this one I set out to build my rear 3 link setup on my Toyota FJ Cruiser! Adding parts that weren't intended for a specific vehicle to a vehicle that was never intended to have those parts is full of challenges and excitement, and occasional disappointment!

Glad you took time to wear some protective gear. Have a good night sleep, get some rest, haste makes waste so they say. By the way, I have a 1:10 RC FJ Cruiser from HPI, early last year, I already bought the metal links to replace the stock plastic ones and unfortunately, I still can't find the time to work on them and here you are working on your 1:1 FJ. So happy for you man!

Midnight? You're an animal! Hey Ken. I have icon suspension on my FJ. With those type of joints. Don't be surprised when they make a clunking sound now and then. Icon tells me not to worry. It's normal. Other people with the same setup have told me their joints make noise too. But you probably already know this. I didn't and freaked out at first.

I've read somewhere that if you want even stronger lower links, stick a piece of aluminum bar inside the DOM tubing before welding the ends together.
@offroadhub.official
@offroadhub.official 3 жыл бұрын
I can see how that might work, I don't think it's a very common practice. You'd have to find some aluminum bar that was a perfect fit to be effective.
@slixxster5118
@slixxster5118 3 жыл бұрын
@@offroadhub.official It's probably been done many times but maybe because no one really talks about it. Sourcing the right diameter bar shouldn't be difficult. You shouldn't triangulate the lowers narrower at the axles (I realize you said it isn't much) but straight or angled outward at the axle would be best.

Yeah they are pretty much straight! Not enough angle to make any difference one way or there other.

Do people ever mount the lower links on the outside of the frame on FJs? Seems like the axles are wide enough to mount them further toward the tire. Would be stronger and better ground clearance.

@@offroadhub.official i highly recommend you check it out. You want to get ideal anti-squat, anti-dive, and roll axis numbers. I’ve built a few trucks with SAS and geometry is KEY. I know it’s hard to package everything in but it’s worth the effort
@offroadhub.official
@offroadhub.official 3 жыл бұрын
@@Spoolmaster I've looked at a couple. They're so complex I'd need more calculators to get the numbers to enter for the 3 link calculator. Do you have one you'd recommend?
@Toolingabout
@Toolingabout 3 жыл бұрын
@@offroadhub.official at the very least you can calculate the anti-squat with the link lengths and link separation at each end with the triaged calculator.
@Spoolmaster
@Spoolmaster 3 жыл бұрын
I’m using the triaged calculator. I know your dumping in a lot of $$$ into the FJ Cruiser cause I’m also in the middle of doing a full build on a 4th gen 4runner ins it’s $$$. 3 link front and double triangulated 4 link in the rear. I’ve spent a while making sure everything is perfect before I burn everything in. Last thing you want is to build it and then it dosnt perform the way you want it. For example, wheel hopping, front end unloading while climbing a steep ledge or even tipping over while crawling over a small rock. The calculator isn’t hard to learn just takes a bit of playing around with. Just my .02$

Triangulation+panhard bar=binding
@nicholascooper1193
@nicholascooper1193 3 жыл бұрын
nope. there is only one upper link, so nothing constrains the lateral movement except the panhard bar.
@Toolingabout
@Toolingabout 3 жыл бұрын
@@nicholascooper1193 Did you watch the video before commenting? He was saying “not much triangulation because of the gas tank” in reference to the lower links. You don’t want triangulation in the lower links when using a panhard bar because you need to allow the axle to move side to side slightly as the panhard bar pushes and pulls it slightly side to side with suspension travel.
@Toolingabout
@Toolingabout 3 жыл бұрын
Which also implies that he would have mounted the axle side link mounts more inward if not for the gas tank which is the opposite of what you want, you want them mounted as outward as possible.
@nicholascooper1193
@nicholascooper1193 3 жыл бұрын
@@Toolingabout It'll still move side to side with no panhard, even if the the lowers are very triangulated. It causes axle steer as the panhard cycles up/down, but ideally your panhard is long and flat at ride height, so the axle steer is minimal and the same on up/down travel.
@Toolingabout
@Toolingabout 3 жыл бұрын
@@nicholascooper1193 Ok, you mount your lowers of your 3 link inward and let me know how that works out for you.
