Seamless can you do a video of yourself mastering a track, like the whole process from the original uncompressed file to your final master? I would love to see how you use maximus ect in a genuine example
@polymetric2614

BMXrace321 He usually does it very early on in making a track though, since for his style, mastering is practically part of mixing for him. But he could offer mastering services I guess. That'd actually be kind of cool, because what he could do is, probably for a higher price than most mastering services, make two masters, one in his very crushed style, and one in a more traditional, more dynamic style.

+Phillip Morrison It probably is. I actually find Sytrus more straight-forward than this, and Sytrus has a pretty sophistocated interface, which is arguably even more complex than that of Maximus.

Can you make videos like this in layman's terms? It would make your videos more beneficial for us especially since (I'm guessing) many of us aren't even close to the level of understanding you have of music production. Ex. Breaking down terms and going in depth when you're using terminology. It would help immensely having an in-depth knowledge of what something does so later on in the video I can understand what you mean and it sticks with me forever... I won't need to look at anyone elses videos or articles for understanding.

this is exactly where I draw the line between musician and software plugin vst engineer. And this video is on the far engineer side, this is NOT for musicians. and a musician does not care if compression distortion have similarities in theory and how the waves work, he just listens and knows what they will do in a piece of music. he also knows distortion reduces dynamics but he will never make it into word and does not need to, it is instinctive.

Dear Seamless, I've been a long time viewer and listener and this isn't my first time watching this video over the years, but first of all thank you for all the videos man...they've helped so much, still I only recently am getting an idea of compression. This vid was excellent and I was wondering if I could ask for a reply to the following question.. Q: (The question is coming after my visual description attempt here). In a project of mine, I have a vocal clip. Slot 1 has maximus at the top and underneath it in slot two is fruity param eq2 (with a selected "Mastering" preset titled, "Vocal Presence".) When I isolate param eq2 by muting maximus the vocal's volume blasts!!!!!!!!! So i spent the last 3 hours adding maximus to my vocal mixer and playing with it whilst keeping param eq2 still on (all this in individual vocal mixer). Now my vocals don't clip 0 DB. And having played with wave shaping in maximus the vocals themself sound way better now. Is this a proper use of Maximus or is maximus typically best used only in you master mixer channel? And second question if you're forgiving to fans.... Q2: Can you have maximus in multiple mixers? For example a guitar clip a synth pattern a kick drum Can maximus be used in all of these as well as the master? It seems to be working sort of as I grasp it all, just wanna know if I have the right approach to maximus' limitations. Thanks Take Care!!!! - Guitarthur

Even know I'm not Seamless and you might know the answer by now: rule of thumb is, if it sounds better, you're doing something right. I started using Maximus on trap drums and I get to shape them way better than with EQ or other sound design-ish tools; so go ahead and use it everywhere, I believe it's a great tool and you seem to know how to make the most out of it!

If Maximus' master channel attack anticipates peaks and compresses up to the point the peak occurs and this is applied as a general setting over the low, mid and high. Then doesn't LMH delay do the same thing? I'm pretty new so I may be misinterpreting the function of LMH delay and/or master attack.

@SeamlessR
@SeamlessR 9 жыл бұрын
APTOH Rather, you find that the way YOU use maximus gives off a very "tinny" sound. I'm not trying to fight you here but it's very important to separate the results of what a plugin does vs the results of what you do with a plugin. I'm not saying every plugin with weird results is entirely your fault. But I can guarantee you in this instance that Maximus grants you enough control over what it's doing that if there's an unpleasant happening there is a way for you to change what's causing it.

@SeamlessR
@SeamlessR 9 жыл бұрын
blood lord You know, attack controls exist in compressors for the express purpose of preserving transients :p Not only that, but so-called "transient shapers" are, themselves, compressors. And everything you would accomplish with them can be done with Maximus. I know you're just memin', but I thought I'd point that out for people :)

@bloodlord1989
@bloodlord1989 9 жыл бұрын
Olivier Wierda But think about what that poor sine wave is going through. Sine waves have feelings too i think. I never asked one because only a crazy a person would talk to a sine wave. All jokes aside distortion is such a great tool for sounds that need to get cooked up. Filter before distortion is a basic technique and changes the sound a lot. On Maximus i like to draw in a shape then go to filter on settings and smooth it up to get a more customized nonlinear signal/analog.

РØŁ¥Μ€ŦŘΞĆ Mastering is controlling the overall level LUFS or RMS as well as fine adjustments to balance the frequencies to be ready for release. Anything over -6 RMS or LUFS distorts and is pushing it. A sweet spot depends on the song and genre. Harder music is good around the average range of - 11 to -9 RMS or LUFS. LUFS and RMS are measurements of loudness that are similar except LUFS is the standard measurement used worldwide to normalize content and such. LUFS measures loudness based on frequencies we can hear. That is the biggest part of mastering,but there is a lot more such as stereo adjustments if needed for mono compatibility. I only produce harder styles of music so i don't which would be a good measurement for something like jazz or opera,but it should be around the -11 and under range RMS/LUFS somewhere.
